'Only God Forgives' Red Band Trailer: The Zen Of Ryan

To counter the operatic heat of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, I now bring you the cinematic cool of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling. A zen-like calm dominates this red band trailer for Only God Forgives, despite some very violent shit going down. more »

Nicolas Winding Refn has said that the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspired him to become a filmmaker. So we shouldn't be surprised that Ryan Gosling appears to be sporting a quasi-Leatherface look in what may be a poster for Only God Forgives. (Check it out after the jump.)  Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but the actor's face does look pretty damn tore up. more »

VIDEO: How Ryan Gosling Was Carved From Stone to Save Us From Taxis and Loneliness

Another celebrity news revelation, another opportunity for the crack team at NMA to bring the story to life via crudely rendered computer animation. Thus their latest: The background on how Ryan Gosling — patron saint of NYC street-fighters and journalists wandering in front of taxis — was carved from stone to take his place among the deified cultural elite. He even saves baby animals! Who knew?

We Need to Find Christina Hendricks's Junior High Yearbook

"When I was in junior high, I was sewing my own clothes. [...] I had these looks. Sometimes they were very tragic. I wore a pair of green, silk, MC Hammer–style pants with the low crotch, Birkenstocks, and my hair in a turban. What that look was, I don’t know, but it was kind of amazing." [BlackBook]

YouReviewers Awards

The 2nd Annual YouReviewers Movie Awards aired on YouTube this past weekend, and we've got to say, it was quite a show! Excitement Over Accuracy = Key to Oscar-Nommed Sound of Drive

Drive sound editor Lon Bender, up for the Oscar against The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hugo, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and War Horse, on director Nicolas Refn's unusual sound requests: “In the sound world, there often is a propensity to want, at least for things like car chases, guns or weapons, to use sounds of the real weapons or the real cars. But when I went to Nic to talk about car engines and the specificity of the kind of cars they were, he said, ‘I don’t even have a driver’s license and I’ve never driven a car. I don’t care what they sound like! They just have to sound exciting.’” [NYT]

Oscar Index: Ladies First

Oscar Index: Ladies First

You know that when two of the most respected pundits in all of Oscardom argue (within days of each other!) for curtailing both the epic Academy Awards season race and the ceremony in which it culminates, patience for all this crap is wearing thin. With that in mind — and also considering that the "race" for most of these categories ended weeks or months ago — who's up for an Oscar Index lightning round? (The entire staff at Movieline's Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics raises its hands.) OK, then — to the Index!

Oscar Index: It's the Charm, Stupid

Oscar Index: It's the Charm, Stupid

"Let's have a moment of silence for the suffering Oscar bloggers as they enter the most trying and mortifying weeks of their labors." Such was Glenn Kenny's tweeted lament earlier this week -- one eerily anticipating today's latest, sanity-thrashing edition of Oscar Index. And that's just its effect on readers! You really don't want to see the catatonic pall saturating Movieline's Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics. On the other hand, we're gonna make a fortune recycling this mounting pile of wine bottles. To the Index!

Oscar Index: Help is on the Way

It's a little difficult for the specialists at Movieline's Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics to come into work these days, what with the pall of predictability settling in over the awards landscape and the painstaking studies into backlash physics yielding less and less of practical substance. What's a frustrated kudologist to do? Besides drink for the next four weeks straight, I mean. Let's look for ideas and encouragement for all in this week's Oscar Index.

'C'mon Son!' -- Rapper Ed Lover Blasts Oscar Nominations, Drive and Harry Potter Snubs

Oscars 2012: Ed Lover

What, ya didn't know rapper/personality Ed Lover was a closet cinephile-slash-Oscar pundit? To borrow from the man himself: "C'mon, son!" In a searing video rant over at NextMovie, he reacts to this year's batch of Oscar nominees and glaring snubs (what, no Drive, Harry Potter, or "Dame Julie Dench?") and pretty much takes the words out of my mouth. "They had the Academy Award nominations the other day at like 7 o'clock in the damn morning... C'mon, son!"

Oscar Index: The Beginning of the End

There's good news and bad news to begin this post-nomination, next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-last installment of Oscar Index. The good news? It's kind of almost over! The bad news? Oy. Please don't make me repeat it.
