Why do the robbery scenes in Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pinesseem so authentic? They're as close as you can get to the real thing without breaking the law! "Derek had this rule that all of those bank heists would be shot in one take," explains star Ryan Gosling. "And so there was just an energy to them that I don't think you could have got if you were breaking it up."
I've never been a huge fan of Richard Linklater's Before Sunset and Before Sunrise for exactly the reason that so many people adore it: the self-absorbed dialogue and debates about life and love that take place between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) are so authentic that I'd much prefer to engage in them myself rather than watch two actors do it for me. (I do self-absorption magnificently, if I do say so myself.)
With Judith Hill now wowing them on The Voice, it's a good time to check out her history as a back-up singer with none other than the late Michael Jackson. Hill is one of the golden voices featured in Morgan Neville's documentary, Twenty Feet From Stardom, which had great buzz at Sundance and will be released theatrically by Radius TWC on June 14.
If Hill goes all the way on the TV competition it could sweeten the box office for Neville's film. In the meantime, the trailer features Hill discusses being a part of Jackson's final This Is It tour and the shock of learning that the King of Pop had died.
Twenty Feet From Stardom also features such revered singers as Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Tata Vega.

After a six-second 'Tweaser' anda 20-second preview of The Wolverine, Marvel unleashed almost four-and-a-half minutes of adamantium goodness in the form of two trailers on Wednesday, and it sets up at least part of the storyline for Hugh Jackman'slatest outing as the cigar-smoking mutant. more »
Is Bruce Willis the most hunted man in action movie history? Editor Pierre-Alexandre Chauvat and sound mixer Sylvain Denis sure make a strong case for it in this epic supercut. Everybody Wants to Kill Brucemixes together scenes from Willis' oeuvre and bad-guy moments that include Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight and Tom Cruise's gray-haired hitman from Collateral. more »
It's a big week for Marvel marketing, what with the promotional campaigns for Iron Man 3 and The Wolverine seeing a lot of action. The big difference is that the Wolvie campaign appears geared to the ADD crowd. more »
The trailer for The Wolverinedoesn't hit until Wednesday, but director James Mangold has released a six-second tweaser trailer via his Twitter account that crams a lot into its extremely brief run time, including plenty toothy grimacing from Hugh Jackman and a glimpse of the adamantium-clawed antihero's unrequited love Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), who died in X2, was reborn as the Phoenix and was willingly killed by Wolverine at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand. more »
If you've been following reports about Iron Man 3, then you know that Gwyneth Paltrow's character Pepper Potts dons an armored suit during the Mandarin's helicopter attack on Tony Stark's home. But now you can actually see her in the suit in this international TV spot for the movie. Gywnnie looks great, but I'm more interested in the Mandarin's affectation-free "You'll never see me coming" voiceover. more »
Evil Deadhits theaters in less than two weeks, and the debate in my head grows louder: Should I bring the airsickness bag I brought home from my last plane flight, or will a gallon-sized Ziploc baggie do? As I wrote earlier, Fede Alvarez's intense, serious-as-a-heart attack remake of Sam Raimi's humorous horror classic, The Evil Dead, is looking pretty review proof, but I've got to wonder if reports of the movie's extreme gore and the intensity of the trailers that are being released will give more squeamish horror fans second thoughts about attending, especially since the update doesn't share the comic relief of the original.
Here's the latest clip to surface via Yahoo! Everyone looks pretty freaked at what's going on in that little cabin, and that's before Mia (Jane Levy) shoots her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) and lets out an operatic scream that comes with its own Auto-Tune translation. Also, there are two new posters for the movie. Actually, they're variants that feature the same image, but one features review blurbs and one does not. Don't you just love it when review-proof movies show off their good reviews?
Olympus Has Fallen features an almost 30-minute assault on The White House, and producer/star Gerard Butler says the extended siege wasn't to show off. "You're not going to take over one of the most defended buildings in the world in 30 seconds," he told me. "There's a version of that, but that's not our movie."
Ilya Naishuller sounds like the name of a character from The Man From U.N.C.L.E., but he's got a better shot at directing a future entry in the James Bond franchise. The 29-year-old Naishuller is a most interesting hyphenate: he's the front man for the Russian punk band Biting Elbows and a filmmaker who has lit up the Internet — 6 million YouTube views and counting since its Mar. 18 upload — and Hollywood with a remarkable NSFW music video for the band's new single "Bad Motherfucker." more »
Director Paul Weitz wanted Tina Fey so badly for his new movie Admission that he was willing to keep her clothed. "Originally the movie was closer to the book in that it had a couple of legitimate sex scenes in it and I was like 'Urk!'" Fey tells me. "So they were kind enough to accommodate that."
There is apparently no end to Lilo & Stitch creator Chris Sanders' talents, from doing a great Nicolas Cage impression to braving the bitter cold at the NYC premiere of The Croods - with no jacket! more »
Long before the Is-Ricky Gervais'-Version-of-The-Office-Funnier-Than-Steve-Carell's? argument raged in bars frequented by comedy junkies, I spent way too much time debating similar question: whether Steve Coogan's BBC TV talk-show spoof Knowing Me, Knowing You...With Alan Partridge was superior to Garry Shandling's HBO series The Larry Sanders Show. more »
Harmony Korine is passionate about making films his way. "I just want to be the greatest of all time — the greatest that ever did it," said Spring Breakers director, who described his latest work as "beach noir."
