Yesterday, the first trailer for Tom Cruise's upcoming science fiction film Oblivion was released online, and if you're anything like us (and the rest of the internet), you'll immediately note that it has absolutely nothing whatsoever in common with Wall-E. No sir, nothing at all.
Oblivion follows Cruise's Jack Harper (his second Jack-namedm character in a row? Uh oh, typecasting), a maintenance man assigned to clean up planet earth in the aftermath of some kind of terrible apocalyptic event. Jack apparently spends his days wallowing through the nostalgic remains of human civilization. No doubt he'll end up singing 'Hello Dolly' right after the little speech about the Super Bowl he gives in the trailer. His mission is less than a fortnight away from completion when a beautiful - and yes, the official description uses the word "attractive" - stranger crash lands on Earth, drawing Jack into a conspiracy that pits him against the authority he serves, and a group of Leather fetishists led by noted kindness-and-gravitas dispenser Morgan Freeman.
Oblivion is helmed by Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, which is about as neutral an indication of the movie's overall quality as you can get. I'm guessing it'll be yet another Logan's Run ripoff, with the same kind of ridiculous 'everything's better and the revolution worked in like 5 minutes' outcome, minus Michael York's lithe frame and blond locks. Originally planned for June, 2013, it's been moved up to April 12, 2013. Until then, Internet: please get to work on the recut Oblivion-as-Wall-E trailer the world desperately needs.
This Japanese Iron Man 3 trailer has surfaced, and though it doesn't offer much in the way of new footage, you do get an added glimpse of Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) getting blown back by the blast of the helicopter attack on Tony Stark's U.S.S. Enterprise-like home. more »
It's no secret that indie filmmakers can often feel like Bob Cratchit, begging for just a little bit of coal from Scroogy Hollywood so they can keep their creative fire burning. more »
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey held its THIRD global premiere on Thursday — this time stateside at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York. I was on the red carpet, and in light of the debate over Peter Jackson's decision to shoot the movie at a high 48 frames per second, I asked Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov if the studio was getting behind the groundbreaking but controversial technique. more »
Hi impact terror appears to be in store this May with Star Trek Into Darkness and Paramount bowed its teaser trailer with a menacing voice warning of vengeance in these "final moments of peace," and it will be Captain Kirk to the rescue, of course.
The first full trailer will debut next week.
ENTV description:

Hark! Christmas came early today, and in the form of a song delivered from on high by former Grease buddies and rockin' Xmas angels John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. In the video for the first holiday jam from their new joint albumThis Christmas, Travolta and O N-J hug and line-dance and drink hot cocoa while crying during It's A Wonderful Life, which is an actual line in the song and OH MY GOD I can't look away so just watch it now. (I took the liberty of transcribing the lyrics below. You're welcome.) more »
Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl will make his directorial debut — and a smart tax write-off — at the Sundance Film Festival with the premiere of Sound City, a documentary about the legendary Van Nuys, California recording studio where Nirvana's Nevermind, Neil Young's After The Gold Rush and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours were recorded among many influential classics. more »
Shane Carruth has traversed back from the future to deliver us the first teaser trailer to his upcoming film Upstream Color.
The writer/director/star of 2004's Primer (and, eerily, NOTHING ELSE!!!!) is bringing his secretive new project to Sundance next month. (Between this and Zal Batmanglij's The East, the Sundance team should seriously consider rechristening the 2013 Fest as "Paranoid Futurists Hit The Slopes!") more »
After an illustrious career playing intimidating characters, Ray Liotta got to see how the other half lives (and begs for mercy) in Killing Them Softly. I sat down with the actor to discuss his harrowing beating scene — which will be much-discussed after the movie's opening weekend — and the underlying politics of Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik's stylish film noir. more »
With this season's Les Misérables mania in swing, many a moviegoer has been obsessing over those familiar songs and weepy French revolutionary dramatics in anticipation of the Christmas Oscar pic. I've been thinking a lot about the classic Les Mis tune "On My Own," about one girl's unrequited love for a boy who loves another — but not as sung by Eponine about Marius and his beloved little songbird Cosette. I'm talking Joey Potter's Miss Windjammer rendition from season one of Dawson's Creek. more »
There aren't many more clues to be had about Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained in this exclusive Yahoo! Movies trailer, or in the director's latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter. But he does share a nifty story about a young fan who wrote herself into a third chapter of Kill Bill. more »
December 14th is the day when Peter Jackson will unleash the first of his Hobbit films, but that doesn't mean it's practically in the can. Jackson is bunkering down in the Park Road Post Production facility in Wellington, New Zealand to finish up the first in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
"It's due to be completed literally two days before the premiere. Hopefully," Jackson comments in the film’s latest production video (below). "You're going to see a lot of sleep-deprived people in this blog — everybody’s working around the clock to get the film finished."
The behind the scenes look shows Jabez Olssen and Jackson editing the film, final construction of hundreds of CGI shots and working on sound effects for the feature which stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Cate Blachett and Elijah Wood.
"We’ve got another three weeks...and then another couple films,” Jackson said. “The journey’s long from over, it’s just really starting."
Meanwhile, a new clip from the film also rolled out. The scene shows Gandalf (Ian McKellen) giving a magical sword to Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman). It's rather quick and Gandalf seems to forewarn of its pending need.
While the makers of the forthcoming live-action Captain Planet movie piece together the remnants of your childhood, the folks at Funny or Die are owning the Planeteer game with yet another video featuring Don Cheadle as the terrifying enviro-hero gone mad with green power.
If you missed the excellent ParaNorman in theaters (or saw the similarly macabre and quirky Frankenweenie instead), catch an exclusive clip from the dark, funny, moving, and visually impressive stop-motion animation about a loner kid named Norman whose ability to see dead people first makes him an outcast, then an unlikely hero, when his small town is overrun by zombies. more »
You've probably been wondering just how Thor (Chris Hemsworth) made his way back to Earth in The Avengers after being separated from his lady scientist girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) at the end of 2011's Thor. A newly released deleted scene from the ending to Thor reveals that Jane was at least trying to re-establish connection, sending a beacon skyward to help her man find his way back to her. (And once he finds his way back, what, not even a phone call? Ugh, men.) more »
