The Expendables 2 bumped last week's number one film The Bourne Legacy to number two over the weekend. The latest installment of the action pic grossed over $28.7 million in its first roll out, averaging a solid $8,670 screens. Bourne dropped 55% in its second round, while Focus Features' Paranorman rounded out the top three in its initial run.

Some Moviegoers were said to be hesitant to attend The Dark Knight Rises, but a number of people apparently made the trek over the weekend. The final installment in the Batman trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan grossed over $64 million over the weekend, landing atop the box office for a second week. Despite Warner Bros. and the rest of Hollywood officially declining to disclose box-office grosses in the wake of Friday's multiplex shooting in Colorado, reports have The Dark Knight Rises earning a record-setting $160 million and change over the weekend. That would signify the best three-day opening ever for a 2-D release, topping the $158 million earned by its franchise predecessor The Dark Knight and settling into third place on the overall openings list behind The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. As expected, The Amazing Spider-Man spun up impressive numbers over the Friday - Saturday weekend, adding to its totals since rolling out in the U.S. on Tuesday ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. The film topped the overall box office and had one of the largest per screen averages in release, though the top PSA went to specialty release Beasts of the Southern Wild in its second weekend, though its screen count is still very limited. Last weekend's number one Ted held steady in second place on the b.o. rankings, while Brave and Savages came in third and fourth respectively.

Two animated features sit atop the box office this past weekend. Disney/Pixar's Brave seized the top of the b.o. as expected. The animated feature grossed over $66.7 million Friday through Sunday. That total is above Pixar's previous feature title Cars 2, which opened with $66.1 million in 2011. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted held strong with $20.2 million.

Those wild animals in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted showed their box office heft, beating out Prometheus to land atop the overall box office for the weekend. The opener for the third installment of the animated feature figured bigger than anticipated for the pic which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last month and is clearly flexing its franchise prowess. The film had an 8% increase Saturday, bringing out families. But Prometheus is certainly not a disappointment. The feature also had better than expected numbers. Internationally, the pic stood at $91.5 million over the weekend after nearly two weeks in release in some territories and its IMAX $9.1 million total is a June record.

Brava to the dewy-cheeked Kristen Stewart, who opened Snow White and the Huntsman, the weekend's number one movie, by swinging a sword and championing girl power without having to kiss a single vampire! (Those two hunky human suitors and the riveting fabulosity that was Charlize Theron didn't hurt either.) So Lionsgate quietly — like, very quietly — released its long-shelved Miley Cyrus "comedy" LOL into 105 theaters over the weekend. Director Lisa Azuelos's English-language remake of her own French hit from 2008 suffered for it, too, grossing a total of just $46,500 — less overall than The Avengers made per screen.
