Things had been quiet on the Fifty Shades of Grey movie front of late, as the hotly anticipated erotic fiction bestseller teased its way through development — that is, until screenwriter Kelly Marcel (Terra Nova, Saving Mr. Banks) spilled a tantalizing tidbit to The Sunday Times: "There is going to be a lot of sex in the film," she said. "It will be rated NC-17."

This week television's probing procedural Law & Order: SVU ripped inspiration from the headlines — or rather, the bestseller list — with a case involving the assault of the author of a Fifty Shades of Grey-style novel. (Starring My Girl's Anna Chlumsky!) But what's the takeaway here? What's L&O:SVU really trying to say to E.L. James?

The kinky erotic pop phenomenon 50 Shades of Grey has finally landed — or shall we say, tied down — a writer! British actress/scribe Kelly Marcel, who co-created the short-lived Steven Spielberg-produced series Terra Nova and scripted the upcoming Mary Poppins pic Saving Mr. Banks, will adapt E.L. James' S&M romance about a young woman who falls for Christian Grey, a damaged dreamboat with a bondage fetish.

They're both behemoth British authors, but that does not necessarily translate into desire to pick up the other's books for a read. On the eve of J.K. Rowling's first post-Harry Potter series roll-out The Casual Vacancy, the mega-selling author of the fantasy series, which spawned a mega-multiple movie franchise said she hasn't read fellow author E.L. James' 50 Shades of Grey and probably won't.

Fans of E.L. James' erotic bestseller 50 Shades of Grey have been fantasy-casting their perfect Christian Grey for months, arguing over whether this actor or that actor would best embody the BDSM-addicted rich playboy hero in the forthcoming film adaptation. But one enterprising academic has cobbled together the perfect Christian Grey with the help of police technology — a little Brad Pitt here, a dash of McDreamy there — morphing together the features of various leading men. The result: Kinda creepy!

You've heard of the erotic bestseller 50 Shades of Grey. You may have even read a steamy passage or two here and there. But why torture yourself by actually reading E.L. James' florid-melodramatic prose when one animated fan trailer gives you all the essential need-to-knows — including the best-worst cringe-inducing scene of the book?

The best tidbit about E.L. James' 50 Shades of Grey S&M erotica series, besides the fact that your mother may be reading the salacious bestselling tomes right this very second, is that the book trilogy began, as great cultural touchstones do, as Twilight fan fiction. So it's all sorts of strange to watch Kristen Stewart and her Snow White and the Huntsman castmates Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, and Charlize Theron reading steamy passages from the naughty, naughty 50 Shades of Grey aloud. Awesome or creepy (or both)? You decide!

While visiting Ryan Seacrest's show, The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder revealed that he might be "potentially" up for the role of gazillionaire playboy/closet BDSM freak Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of E. L. James' breathless erotica 50 Shades of Grey. To which I say: Yes. I'll allow it. That said, Somerhalder was choosing his words so carefully it's hard to tell exactly how far in the casting process he might be, so take it with a grain of salt. Oh, and enjoy the mental image of Ryan Seacrest listening to the squirmier parts of the 50 Shades audiobook at the valet stand.
