You may have read Rebecca Martinson's batshit letter to her Delta Gamma sorority sisters at the University of Maryland, but you haven't experienced the full mind-blowing vitriol of this remarkable document until General Zodperforms it for you. This exclusive Funny or Die clip of Man of Steelstar Michael Shannon, who plays Superman's Kryptonian rival, has just surpassed "Bat Fight" to become my favorite FOD video thanks to Shannon's impeccable comic timing and delivery. more »
Until today, I associated Huey Lewis' name with two thoughts: 1) He was the musical artist behind some of the most annoying pop hits of the 1980s; and 2) he showed his penis in Robert Altman's 1993 film Short Cuts. But now that I've seen him in this Funny or DieAmerican Psycho parody clip, I'm seriously considering forgiving him for giving me a decade-long headache and adding him to my list of secret geniuses.
The clip is a real mind-fuck: it's satirizes a scene that satirized Lewis' music in a movie that satirized 1980s commercialism and greed, and it also stars master parodist (and longtime secret genius) Weird Al Yankovic in the victim role originally played by Jared Leto. (I've included it below for the sake of comparison.) How's that for meta?
Lewis' aping of Christian Bale's performance, while the original scene plays on a TV right next to him, is particularly impressive, and I love Yankovic's crack about the newspapers covering the floor. And the coup de gras is that the clip is used to promote the back catalogs of both artists. The Funny or Die clip features "I Want A New Drug," off Lewis' most successful album, Sports, which turns 30 in September. That single spawned Yankovic's "I Want A New Duck," which was not one of his best, and, well, let's just say he pays for his sins. I swear, you could build an New York University Tisch School of the Arts class around deconstructing this clip.
The other secret genius involved in this enterprise: Funny or Die director/editor PatB, who also did the very funny "Oscar's Best Handjob Award" video, which I've posted at the bottom. I hope there's a feature in this guy's future.
Earlier this week, Funny or Die tried to answer the question I hoped would never get asked this Oscar season: Who had it worse, slaves or poor, single mothers driven into prostitution? more »
After last week's bizarre President Camacho "Funny or Die" press conference, in which white people were severely maligned, the website has redeemed itself with a get-out-the-vote video from one of its founders, Will Ferrell. I had to watch the video twice, because the first time, I was terribly distracted by the push-broom mustache Ferrell is wearing in the clip, which makes the number Gary Oldman wore in The Dark Knight Rises look inconspicuous by comparison.
In what was the shortest press op of my media career, Terry Crews portrayed Idiocracy President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho in a Funny or Die conference call that, like most political media events, was about nothing. That seems to have something to do the absence of Idiocracy filmmaker Mike Judge, who was also supposed to be present at the press conference, but did not make it. more »
This new Funny or Die bit featuring reigning Oscar king Jean Dujardin pushing a fictional brand of cigarettes in the suavest, most charming and youth-enticing way possible is pretty good ("And now in Cotton Candy and Snickers Bar!" I LOL'ed). Still, when it comes to animated/live-action smoke pushers, Dujardin and his partner in crime have pretty formidable competition in the infamous Happy Joe Lucky. Right down to the accordions! Who's got the kid-pleasingest cigarettes around? more »
Another Oscars promo video, another vain attempt to show some personality and pep by the Academy; this time around the Oscars have tapped Mike Myers to do an uppity butler type straight out of the discards of the Austin Powers supporting character brainstorming boards, who teaches Oscar winner Kevin Kline the proper way to hold his statuette. If this kind of humor tickles you silly and makes you set your TV calendar for Sunday, then hold on to your pants and chill a few cans of Ensure! more »
There is only one way to spoof Nicolas Winding Refn's crime drama Drive with the help of the Hamburglar -- and web personality/comedian Alex Blagg nailed it in his Funny or Die video Drive-Thru. Ahead, enjoy as Blagg rips off Ryan Gosling's super-serious stunt driver by pulling off elaborate Arby's Roast Beef Classic heists, erotic elevator french fry feedings and Happy Meal toy threats in the only Drive send-up you'll ever need.
Children of the '90s were aghast to hear there was a live-action Captain Planet film reboot in the works, courtesy of the producers behind the Transformers movies. Even the good people at Funny or Die took heed, making their own version of what a live-action Captain Planet movie would look like... if Don Cheadle (in horrifying blue face paint and the Captain's trademark green mullet) played the part of the eco-friendly superhero, with folks like Brenda Song and Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite onboard as his multi-culti band of annoying young do-gooders.
