Domestic Box Office Rises In Dollars And Audiences In 2012

Domestic Box Office Rises In Dollars And Audiences In 2012

Year on year, Hollywood's box office receipts rise. And while the 2012 numbers came in higher than 2011, the year marked a specifically good turn for the movie industry: the number of actual tickets sold went up for the first time in three years.

The year's big numbers come despite a generally slow summer blockbuster season.

The number of admissions have had a general decline for a decade, with the number of tickets sold flat lining in 2011 with 1.29 billion, which was the lowest number since 1995, according to A.P. Dollar amounts typically rise despite the decline of audiences numbers due to the rise in ticket prices. But for 2012, ticket sales rose 5.6 percent to 1.36 billion by December 31.

The number is still significantly below the peak of 1.6 billion sold in 2002. On the overall revenue side, the domestic box office should top out 6 percent ahead of the $10.2 billion figure last year and also top Hollywood's previous $10.6 billion record set in 2009.

Leading the list of box office hits was Disney's The Avengers with $623 million domestically ($1.5 billion worldwide) and Warner Bros.' third Batman installment The Dark Knight Rises with $448 million domestically ($1.1 billion worldwide). Lionsgate's The Hunger Games grossed over $408 million ($686.5 million) while Sony's James Bond pic Skyfall reached nearly $280 million as of Sunday (and will likely surpass $1 billion this week); The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 has a domestic total so far of nearly $282 million ($759.1 million worldwide); The Amazing Spider-Man topped out at just over $262 million in the U.S. ($752 million worldwide). Other big 2012 titles included Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted ($216 million) and Ice Age: Continental Drift ($161 million).

And Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has totaled $157 million domestically since opening December 14th in the U.S.

While it's good news for Hollywood, the future of the box office dollar continues to like overseas. International audiences used to amount to less than half of a typical release, but that figure has swelled to two or even three times dollars spent domestically. Even pics such as Battleship and John Carter which tanked in the U.S. came out decently overseas ($209.7 million abroad for John Carter and $237.6 million for Battleship).

The domestic market has also been hampered with the advent of ever-sophisticated home entertainment systems, portable devices and video games. Still, most agree the big screen experience with an audience is the best way to see a movie.

"Every home has a kitchen, but you can't get into a good restaurant on Saturday night," Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros told A.P. "People want to escape. That's the nature of society. The adult population just is not going to sit home seven days a week, even though they have technology in their home that's certainly an improvement over what it was 10 years ago. People want to get out of the house, and no matter what they throw in the face of theatrical exhibition, it continues to perform at a strong level."

'Skyfall' Heads Back To Number 1 In Weak Weekend

'Skyfall' Heads Back To Number 1 In Weak Weekend

Skyfall once again headed to the top spot in the box office over the weekend, grossing $11 million in a weekend that only had one weak showing from a major newcomer, Playing for Keeps. With little momentum behind it, the movie opened with only $6 million. Overall, the top 10 only took in $69.14 million, making it one of the lowest grossing weekends of 2012.

1. Skyfall
Gross: $11 million (Cume: $261.6 million)
Screens: 3,401 (PSA: $3,234)
Week: 5 (Change: - 33.6%)

A weak showing from the only major newcomer Playing for Keeps allowed the latest and most successful Bond installment to move back into number one over the weekend. It is within reach of becoming Sony's highest-grossing film of the year, passing the studio's The Amazing Spider-Man which totaled $262 million. The title is on track to make a final come of $290 million or even $300 million, which would give it bragging rights of over $120 million to $130 million more than the previous 007 record from Quantum of Solace.

2. Rise of the Guardians
Gross: $10,450,000 (Cume: $61,913,574)
Screens: 3 (PSA: $2,896)
Week: 3 (Change: - 21.3%)

Last weekend's number 4 shot up to second this weekend with only a 21 percent drop. The pic has a Christmas connection which should give it momentum through the month, but its total at nearly $62 million may make a $100 million cume a challenge.

3. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part - 2
Gross: $9.2 million (Cume: $268.7 million)
Screens: 3,646 (PSA: $2,523)
Week: 4 (Change: - 47.2%)

The film is now $1.4 million ahead of New Moon at the same point. It dropped two slots to number 3 after placing first for three weeks. The title lost 362 theaters from the previous weekend and its $2,523 average compared to $4,345 one week prior.

4. Lincoln
Gross: $9,115,000 (Cume: $97,335,000)
Screens: 2,014 (PSA: $4,526)
Week: 5 (Change: - 31.9%)

Lincoln lost only four theaters in its fifth weekend. It should pass Argo as the highest grossing film so far among the major Oscar hopefuls. It ranked third last weekend after grossing over $13.5 million. Its $4,526 average was the highest among the top ten titles.

5. Life of Pi
Gross: $8.3 million (Cume: $60,917,529)
Screens: 2,946 (PSA: $2,817)
Week: 3 (Change: - 32%)

Life of Pi again rounded out the top 5 over the weekend, grossing $8.3 million, down 32% from $12 million last weekend. The title added 928 theaters. Overseas, the film has grossed nearly $106 million.

6. Playing for Keeps
Gross: $6 million
Screens: 2,837 (PSA: $2,115)
Week: 1

The marketing effort ahead of its release was kept minimal and the result reflected that. This is star Gerard Butler's second recent bad showing after Chasing Mavericks which has only cumed $5.8 million to date.

7. Wreck-It Ralph
Gross: $4,904,000 (Cume: $164,448,000)
Screens: 2,746 (PSA: $1,786)
Week: 6 (Change: - 29.4%)

The animated pic lost 341 theaters over the weekend, falling one spot to 7th in the rankings. Combined with $51.1 million abroad, the pic has a come of over $215,548,000.

8. Red Dawn
Gross: $4,261,000 (Cume: $37,265,815)
Screens: 2,754 (PSA: $1,547)
Week: 3 (Change: - 34.4%)

Again placing 8th, it dropped a relatively stable 34.4% after dropping 27 theaters.

9. Flight
Gross: $3.13 million (Cume: $86,202,236)
Screens: 2,431 (PSA: $1,288)
Week: 6 (Change: - 30.1%)

The Oscar hopeful starring Denzel Washington lost 172 locations and again placed ninth in the ranking. Worldwide the title has cumed $89,629,680.

10. Killing Them Softly
Gross: $2,784,000 (Cume: $11,807,737)
Screens: 2,424 (PSA: $1,149)
Week: 2 (Change: - 59.7%)

The Brad Pitt starrer placed 7th in its debut and will likely move out of the top 10 after its second weekend. It remained in the same number of theaters as its bow, but dropped a steep 60%. The pic will likely disappear from theaters by Christmas.

'Twilight' Number One At The Box Office As Newcomers Fizzle

'Twilight' Number One At The Box Office As Newcomers Fizzle

Newcomers Killing Them Softly and The Collection bowed soft over the weekend, with the latter barely making it into the top ten. Holdovers including Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Skyfall and Lincoln remained the top three pics domestically. The Weinstein Company's Silver Linings Playbook, meanwhile, placed just outside the top ten over the weekend, though the Oscar hopeful played in comparatively far fewer locations and is showing strength as it continues to roll out slowly.

1. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
Gross: $17,410,000 (Cume: $254.6 million)
Screens: 4008 (PSA: $4,344)
Week: 3 (Change: - 60%)

Number one for three weeks, the final Twilight scored the top spot after a weak showing from newcomers. The feature dropped 62 locations from its second weekend and its $4,344 average was significantly lower than its $10,723 showing in week 2. Still, it is a bit better off than its previous installments and is within $1 million from matching New Moon.

2. Skyfall
Gross: $17 million (Cume: $246 million)
Screens: 3,463 (PSA: $4,909)
Week: 4 (Change: - 52%)

The highest grossing Bond film continues to show strength one month into its U.S. run. The pic averaged a solid $4,909, compared to Twilight's $4,344 average in its third week, though it is in 545 fewer theaters. Globally, Skyfall has grossed over $869 million, a good return for its $200 million budget. A $300 million domestic run is not out of the question.

3. Lincoln
Gross: $13,509,000 (Cume: $83,698,000)
Screens: 2,018 (PSA: $6,694)
Week: 4 (Change: - 47%)

Steven Spielberg's big Oscar contender remained in the same number of theaters in its third weekend, though its per screen average was almost halved from the previous weekend's $12,724. Still, it had the highest PSA in the top 10 for the weekend. Its nearly $83.7 million gross is outpacing the filmmaker's 2011 movies The Adventures of Tintin ($77.6 million) and War Horse ($79.9 million).

4. Rise of the Guardians
Gross: $13,500,000 (Cume: $48,947,253)
Screens: 3,672 (PSA: $3,676)
Week: 2 (Change: - 43%)

The Paramount/Dreamworks animation added 19 theaters and remained fourth in the overall top ten. Still, it will struggle to reach $100 million.

5. Life of Pi
Gross: $12 million (Cume: $48,361,141)
Screens: 2,018 (PSA: $4,098)
Week: 2 (Change: -46.6%)

The Ang Lee 3-D feature added just one location over the weekend, rounding out the top 5, though. Globally, it has grossed nearly $109 million ($60,500,000) abroad and is said to be performing well.

6. Wreck-It Ralph
Gross: $7,020,000 (Cume: $158,257,000)
Screens: 3,087 (PSA: $2,274)
Week: 5 (Change: - 57.6%)

The animated feature remained at the sixth position, though dropped 172 locations and had a fairly steep 57-plus percent drop from the week prior. Its $2,274 average compares to $5,085 last week and $5,131 the week before that. Still, it's had a good run and combined with foreign box office of $44 million, it topped the $200 million mark over the weekend.

7. Killing Them Softly
Gross: $7 million
Screens: 2,424 (PSA: $2,888)
Week: 1

The Cannes 2012 feature is one of Brad Pitt's worse performing openings ever, though not as bad as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford which only made $3.9 million. The pic should fade from theaters soon.

8. Red Dawn
Gross: $6,550,000 (Cume: $31,322,708)
Screens: 2,781 (PSA: $2,355)
Week: 2 (Change: - 54%)

The film had a relatively steep 54% decline in gross compared to its first weekend, though it added 57 more venues. Its $2,355 average compares to its $5,241 opening. It may struggle to match its $65 million production budget domestically.

9. Flight
Gross: $4,540,000 (Cume: $81,526,836)
Screens: 2,603 (PSA: $1,744)
Week: 5 (Change: - 46.3%)

Flight shed 35 theaters in its fifth week after adding locations over the past month. Still, the Denzel Washington-starrer has performed well at the box office with a domestic come over $81.5 million vs its $31 million production budget. It may be a reach to hit the $100 million mark.

10. The Collection
Gross: $3,409,224
Screens: 1,403 (PSA: $2,430)
Week: 1

In its debut, The Collection barely made it into the top ten and its nearly $3.41 million opening is slightly off from its predecessor, The Collector's 2009 $3.57 million bow.

11. Silver Linings Playbook
Gross: $3,341,000 (Cume: $10,990,981)
Screens: 371 (PSA: $9,005)
Week: 3 (Change: - 23.8%)

Though not in the top ten, The Weinstein Company's Oscar hopeful Silver Linings Playbook has continued to gain traction after an opening that was a bit of a disappointment. It ranked 11th for the weekend, though it is in far fewer theaters than titles in the top ten and its $9,005 average was far better than any in the top ten. Word-of-mouth is clearly driving the title.

Twilight Finale Flirted With An R-Rating

There's a ballyhooed sex scene between Bella and Edward that received a respectable 8 on ML's Scream-O-Meter, but it apparently was some violence that almost earned Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which would have caused quite a stir and conundrums in Twi-hard Land, which still counts quite a large crowd of teens among its ranks (not that that crafty crowd wouldn't have found a way). more »
