Just because you're not receiving mysterious VHS tapes in Austin this week -- where rumor has it Paramount may premiere Paranormal Activity 3 tonight as a secret screening at Fantastic Fest -- does not mean that you won't get to see the franchise prequel before its October 21 release. The studio has just launched a Twitter campaign which allows fans to vote on 20 cities to host special pre-release premieres. In the brand new trailer for New Year's Eve, Garry Marshall's holiday-themed movie event that promises to give the phrase "ensemble romantic comedy" a bad name, Robert De Niro wonders what could possibly beat "New York on New Year's Eve." I'll tell you what: Not throwing all of your actorly credibility out the window confetti-style to appear alongside Zac Efron, Jon Bon Jovi and Ludacris in a movie that features Ashton Kutcher trapped in an elevator with the annoying girl from Glee. You know what other moviegoers might also consider better than seeing Garry Marshall's vision of NYC on New Year's Eve? Tom Six's Human Centipede 2, which inspires similar nausea but for different reasons.

The NYC cop drama/thriller Son of No One set up quite a bubble for itself ahead of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival: Talented filmmaker Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting) had his muse Channing Tatum spearheading a cast including Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche, Katie Holmes, Ray Liotta and, going straight, Tracy Morgan, creds that helped the movie earn the festival's prestigious closing-night spot. And then came that notorious press and industry screening, piercing the bubble and hurling Son into indie limbo. Art-house ensemble piece or genre potboiler? Misunderstood gem or biggest swing-and-miss of 2011? And while I'd never suggest judging a film by its trailer, the latest spot does prompt the necessary question asked of all marketing: Does this preview actually make you want to see Son of No One? That's where things get complicated.

The parody trailers for The Muppets have tackled rom coms, Green Lantern, and more over the course of the marketing campaign for the Jason Segel-led November release, but this one takes the cake. Because you haven't really thought enough about Kermit and Miss Piggy until you've seen them posing as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander. (Sans pierced-nipple nudity, but still.) Muppets, you win.

Over the summer, audiences got their first taste of David Fincher's English-language version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in the form of a "leaked" trailer that was either stolen and placed online or (more likely) a brilliantly secretive piece of marketing posed as an accidental viral phenomenon. This week something called Mouth Taped Shut (http://mouth-taped-shut.com/) debuted announcing a special surprise attached to a number of "secret" regional screenings of upcoming Sony films Straw Dogs and Moneyball. That surprise turned out to be an eight-minute preview trailer for Fincher's Dragon Tattoo.

Take a look at Crowe's first feature since Elizabethtown, about a single father (Matt Damon) who moves his family into a zoo to turn things around by helping animals and stuff. Peter Facinelli, the elder Twilight statesman at age 37, wrote, produced, and stars in the new movie Loosies, the story of a tricky pickpocket who discovers that his ex-girlfriend (Jaimie Alexander) is pregnant just as he finds himself on the lam. It costars Michael Madsen and Vincent Gallo, which should make you jolt an eyebrow. Let's see if Facinelli can make thievery look cool in the movie's new trailer.

Spanish master Pedro Almodovar reunites with his onetime muse Antonio Banderas in The Skin I Live In, a horror tale of sorts about a doctor (Banderas) trying to synthesize a special kind of skin in his home laboratory who also happens to have a female prisoner locked up in his mansion. Also, everyone in this movie has a gun, and some folks are clad in chic semi-bondage gear. Who knows what deliciously sordid twists are in store? Watch the English-language trailer for a taste of the new Almodovar.

If Sean Penn didn't love the abstract narrative Terrence Malick employed in Tree of Life, maybe he'll dig the pretty-similar, much more conventional stuff in the long-delayed Fireflies in the Garden -- a Tree of Life Lite starring Ryan Reynolds as a middle-aged man who returns to his Texas childhood home to deal with his strained relationship with his stern father (Willem Dafoe). Period flashbacks, memories of an angelic mother (Julia Roberts), and a pivotal death that inspires exploration into deep emotional scars? The only things missing are the cosmic clouds of particles laden with meaning. Would Penn approve?

After making waves at Sundance with his controversial horror pic The Woman -- in which a suburban family man imprisons a feral woman in his basement, with disastrous results -- director Lucky McKee (May, The Woods, Red) will finally unveil his film in theaters this October. And with a release date finally set, distributor The Collective has debuted a brand new trailer that sets a slightly gentler domestic tableau for the titular woman to completely ravage with her female fury.

If there's one simple request I have of Kevin Spacey, it's that he take one movie off from wearing a suit. Mix it up! Grow your hair out! Wear schlubby clothes! Don't always be so Kevin Spacey-esque, Kevin Spacey, because it's become a thing and we're all tired of it.
