The problem with Taylor Swift’s Hunger Games single “Safe & Sound” is – sorry, Swifties – Taylor Swift. Taken on its own it’s a perfectly lovely slice of discordant Americana pop that wisps beautifully with Swift’s reedy warbling as she sings about protecting loved ones as a war rages outside. But as a Hunger Games song… as what promises to be the Hunger Games song associated with the movie (besides Rue’s iconic ditty within the film), it leaves something to be desired precisely because Swift is singing in the spirit and voice of Katniss Everdeen. And you, my adorable little Taylor, are no Katniss Everdeen.

The jury's still out as far as I'm concerned on whether or not director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was the right director to helm Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games, even with the mostly-satisfying first trailer debut earlier this week. Lionsgate, however, seems more confident in Ross, as they want him to return to helm the second Hunger Games installment, 2013's Catching Fire, with writer Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) reportedly in the running to script.

At this point, it seems like The Hunger Games will be a slideshow of moody profile portraits and outdoorsy stills, but Lionsgate is determined to prove that it's going to be a real movie -- with another outdoorsy still. Mortal Kombat isn't the most esteemed video game franchise, but its coterie of bloodthirsty fighters is one of the most beloved in gaming history. Sure, the 1995 movie adaptation was a dud, but it was a magnificent dud with a throbbing Jock Jams soundtrack and a provocative cast. (Where have you gone, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras?) Since the 2013 reboot has a chance of reigniting interest in the age-old series, let's cast our dream players in five of the main roles.

Further evidence that Steven Soderbergh can't possibly retire early as previously reported: Even with Haywire and Contagion to promote and Channing Tatum's stripper movie to shoot this year, the Oscar-winner has found time to shoot second unit on Lionsgate's now-filming adaptation of The Hunger Games.

If you haven't read Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games books yet, the blazing new motion poster Lionsgate debuted today for the 2012 Hunger Games film won't make much sense. Suffice to say, once you begin reading the novels, the sight of a flaming gold bird-shaped pin will stir your senses into action, the symbol of rebellion and of the series' young heroine, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence).

When Gary Ross picked rocker Lenny Kravitz out of nowhere to play Katniss's stylist Cinna in 2012's The Hunger Games, many folks were taken by surprise. But none, perhaps, were more surprised than Kravitz himself, who admits he didn't even know what The Hunger Games trilogy was until he got Ross's phone call.
