Not even lackluster reviews can stop Todd Phillips' highly anticipated R-rated The Hangover Part II. Wednesday's midnight shows brought in a whopping $10.4M, Warner Bros. has the Bangkok-set sequel planned for the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film, and it's going into a five-day holiday weekend. With the Palme d'Or-winning The Tree of Life headed to theaters in limited release on Friday (420 showings, 4eva!), what better time to learn even more about Voyage of Time, the documentary component of Life that director Terrence Malick has been working on for years. That one is still on track to get released eventually, and when it does the narrator will sound awfully familiar.
Per Variety, Twentieth Century Fox has limited its search to replace Darren Aronofsky as director of The Wolverine to a mere eight possibilities: Jose Padilha, Doug Liman, Antoine Fuqua, Mark Romanek, Justin Lin, Gavin O'Connor, James Mangold and Gary Shore. (Apparently Pedro Almodovar and Terrence Malick were unavailable to make this an even ten.) Sadly, none of the Movieline approved suggestions for The Wolverine appear here, though there's still time. As Warner Bros. unveils each of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II character posters, the franchise's cast members are finishing production on the final installment of J.K. Rowling's beloved series. Like Alan Rickman, who after embodying Severus Snape for a decade -- and watching his castmates Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson mature before his very eyes -- typed up a touching farewell letter to J.K. Rowling and published it in Empire Magazine. Read his lovely sentiments below.

Good news for Pearl Jam fans disappointed by the fact that they can't make it to Alpine Valley, Wisc. over Labor Day weekend for the band's 20th anniversary celebration. The Cameron Crowe-directed Pearl Jam documentary, Pearl Jam Twenty, will have a limited theatrical run in September before debuting on PBS in October. Said Crowe in a statement: "There is only one band of their generation for which a film like this could even be made, and I'm honored to be the one given the opportunity to make it." Ron Howard may have built an Academy Award-winning career around finely-tuned dramas like Parenthood, A Beautiful Mind and Frost/Nixon, but the Happy Days star was only able to do so after proving his directorial worth in the lighthearted chase romp Grand Theft Auto (available on DVD this week as part of a double-feature set from Shout Factory). The soft-core smash Sex and Zen 3-D: Extreme Ecstasy -- a/k/a "the world's first 3-D erotic film" that trumped even Avatar's opening-day box-office record in Hong Kong -- has an appointment with the States. U.S. distributor China Lion announced the acquisition today; the deal was brokered at this year's Cannes market. "It is just like [being a] voyeur near someone's bed," said one producer, greasing the skids for the eventual theatrical landing. A release date is forthcoming, as are S&Z's viewers, presumably.
