When Aaron Sorkin decided to adapt The Accidental Billionaires into The Social Network, he signed up for a Facebook account to research the social networking behemoth. Turns out that maybe things aren't going too well on that front, at least if Sorkin's incredibly meta appearance on 30 Rock is any indication. Dude just wants a poke! Ew, not like that -- on Facebook. Fine. Just click ahead to watch.
The UK's Technology Studio kicked around some ideas to terrorize everyday citizens, and they came up with a doozy: making JRR Tolkien's menacing Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings a reality. Using Xbox Kinect technology, Cartesian coordinates and other voodoo, the company has created a glowing eye that follows you around the room and gently traumatizes you as you head to the copier. If there is a silver lining to Elizabeth Taylor's passing, it is that the crew over at Next Media Animation has another Hollywood news story to adapt into comically crude animation. Wipe those tears from your eyes and enjoy NMA's retelling of the screen legend's illustrious life in a mere 1 minute and 40 seconds. I guarantee that no other account of her career will depict Taylor being carried, Cleopatra-style, into rehab, or Michael Jackson projectile-crying with a monkey latched to his side.
Sympathy for Delicious wasn't exactly the toast of Sundance 2010, but with a cast that includes Orlando Bloom, Laura Linney, Juliette Lewis, Noah Emmerich, John Carroll Lynch, screenwriter Christopher Thornton, and first-time director Mark Ruffalo, it earns a second look in its new trailer. We can quibble about the use of Rolling Stones lyrics to illustrate the movie's theme of healing, but at least "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" stays out of the fray.
A dark cultural day darkens still with the news that Richard Leacock, the prolific filmmaker who, with fellow directors D.A. Pennebaker, Robert Drew and the Maysles Brothers helped pioneer the nonfiction format known as "direct cinema," has died at 89.
