Twilight Of 'The Host': A Sequel Is Not Likely

The Host 2

Has The Host already entered its twilight as a potential film franchise? Stephenie Meyer has said she envisions her sci-fi follow-up to the blockbuster Twilight novel franchise, as a three-novel story arc, but the probability of those future books translating into a movie trilogy is looking iffy at best.

A spokeswoman for The Host says information regarding the probability of a sequel "is not available at this time," but the film's dismal opening weekend  does not bode well for a follow-up.  The hordes who swarmed the film adaptations of Meyer's Twilight saga apparently did not find a romance about a parasitic alien nearly as compelling because they did not show up at the cineplex last weekend.

The Host's Box Office Sales Were Dismal

According to Box Office Mojo, The Host did $10.6 million its opening weekend, and as of April 2, it has made only $23.5 million worldwide — little more than half of its $40-million production budget. International box office results, which have become increasingly important, also lagged behind domestic. (In comparison, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is getting a sequel, has grossed almost $140 million worldwide at the box office as of April 2.)

But that's not the only factor that makes a sequel unlikely. At the Los Angeles premiere of The Host on March 19, Meyer told EW.com that she was still working on the second novel.  (The movie's director Andrew Niccol, who expressed interested in helming a sequel even cracked, “Show me the book, Stephenie....You shouldn’t be here. You should be home writing.”

The Follow-Up Novel Isn't Finished

The longer Meyer takes to finish the book, the greater the likelihood that the already meager interest in the movie version of The Host — and any sequel it might spawn — will dissipate further, while the first film's cast members, who've expressed an interest in doing a sequel, grow older and commit to other films.

In other words, you have a better chance of contracting a tapeworm than seeing a sequel to The Host.

    I really hope I don't get a tapeworm.

    • THE HOST FAN says:

Look all I'm saying is that the cast were funny and they seemed to have fun so I bet they will make a HOST 2

  • George McRyan says:

I'd rather get a tapeworm than sit through a sequel to that movie.

    • Amber Randhawa says:

U bitch I loved the movie it was different normally the aliens kill everyone or they try to in this movie it trys to make friends with us think about the that u the host hating JERKS

  • Frank DiGiacomo says:

Ha! I think there's a game in this. I'd rather get [insert hideous parasite here] than sit through a sequel to 'The Host.'

  • Barb says:

The book "The Host" was great for syfy fans and Twilight fans....The movie Host was a total mess...no chemistry, none of the other major charactors and boring...shiny fast cars and bug like helicoptors for the male audience, and a major mess of the actors chosen for their roles so different than those in the book. I think the director was reading another book when he made this film. I heard so many negative comments after watching the movie before they even left the theater! Where was Stephanie Meyer thru all this mess?

    • Joel says:

"Where was Stephanie Meyer thru all this mess?"

Producing the film, on set everyday. Just because a person can do something, doesn't mean that they can do it well. Or should.

The final irony is that, if she had been out writing the sequel instead of producing films, so the sequel was out to the public before the film came out, chance are the box office would have been much higher.

    • Ashly Smith says:

I totally agree, this was nothing compared to the book. The book was amazing!! I am disappointed in this movie, if there was a sequel I want a new director!! and the cast has to learn some acting!! More emotions.

    • austin says:

I own more than a thousand dvd's more than 500 blu rays and 2700 Vhs movies and anyone who says this movie wasn't superb is either a crack head or just a plain moron so take that you haters …

  • alexa says:

I enjoyed the movie with my friends and don't get the hate. I wouldn't be surprised if many said they hated the movie before watching it (just because it was based on a book my Meyer) It certainly seemed to put people off seeing it. Such a shame because I really like the cast, sad to see they got caught in the "twilight/meyer hate bubble." Whether they do a sequel or not, I do hope they all have successful careers since they did do a good job with the characters.

  • max breen says:

I find this sad and agree with the above comment. It was a good cast. I actually loved watching interviews of Jake Abel and Max Irons promoting. They were pretty hilarious together. I would had loved a sequel even just to see them promote together again.

    • Barb says:

Alexa, I most certainly am not aTwilight or Stephanie Meyer hater!, I am a Twimon to the core and my family thinks I'm nuts for all the books and trinkets, etc I have collected the past years.I have so many posters you would think they were family. I simply did not like The Host because they left out to many good people and experiences that were crucial to the story. The brothers Ian and Kyle were so different looking than portrayed in the book. Also Pet was exactly opposite the book. I hated the white clothes on the blond seeker who was small and dark in the book. I loved Max Irons but he looked more like Melanies brother than a love interest. I waited for this movie for so long, I just could not get past everything important left out and thats why I wish I had never seen it.

  • Frank DiGiacomo says:

I sense real disappointment with Meyer. What about the direction? Did Niccol do a good job in your opinions?

  • HCR says:

They cannot end it the way that they did.. I really hope that there is a sequel. I quite enjoyed the cast.

  • hoster says:

there has to be a host follow up! (allready annouced it's gonna called the soul). It is such a great book and a really flawless movie!!!

  • Mike says:

Just because the sequel books were published before the first film does not ensure a film franchise. Look at I Am Number 4 and Beautiful Creatures.

    • Joel says:

...Or A Series of Unfortunate Events.

I've said it before, but the irony of the situation is that if Stephenie Meyer had published the sequel to The Host already, with a third at least on the way, it is possible/likely that the film would have been a box office success, given heightened consumer awareness and enthusiasm.

As they always say, the best marketing any author can do is to write another book.

  • alexia says:

    I really liked this film! i hope there's a part 2!
yes its an imperfect film but thats the reason i liked it!
at first i was hesitant but i loved it in the end! everything is great!

  • David says:

Really surprised at all the negative comments on here, I have not read the book but can say the movie really touched me, and hope there is a sequal hence the reason why I googled will there be a sequal to the host and found this site. Think everyone who watches a movie these days like to consider them selves as some big critic when half couldn't even tell there back from the front. All I say is give the movie a break. Hope they make a sequal. Peace 😉

  • Dylan says:

everyone needs to stop trying to relate the movie as closely as possible to the book... i'd never seen nor heard of the book before this movie. I watched the movie like 5 minutes ago and i effin LOVEDD it. it was amazing! Try and have an open mind and watch the movie as a movie *in its own light*

    • Dylan says:

and im dissapointed its not doing well and might not get a sequel :/ a really epic story right here

    • Barb says:

Dylan, The Host was based on a book and marketed as such...I saw no chemistry between charactors as based on the charactors in the book. Their appearances , the many peoplel left out of the movie that were essential to the story, the Souls and so much of the scenery..all not like the book at all. The cast were excited about being the "next Twilight" and all the fans that included. Wrong! If you just saw the movie and enjoyed it I am glad you did...but had you read the book your expectations would be shattered. Actually Max Irons and the young boy playing Jamie were quite well portrayed.I should add "Jed" and "maggie" were also good in their part..

      • Dylan says:

Hey Barb, and yes I realize that fans of the book might be dissapointed by how many great parts of the story might get left out in the movie. I've experienced that myself with past movie/novel adaptations, but it's hard to include everything great with such a time constraint and budget. Perhaps it could have been better, but what makes me sad is just because of the comparisons to book details people ignore that this movie had gorgeous settings, was fully explained, all the most relevant details involved and it was, in terms of simply being a movie, done extremely well. And because many of the great details that make a movie were forgotten in light of other great details from another medium, a possible sequel may have been sacrificed here. It just sucks for the people who really enjoyed the film for what it portayed on its own.

        • Barb says:

The Host cost 40 million dollars to make, most on the fancy cars and helicopters, It was not promoted well and many were disapointed with the chosen cast...so different from the book. I, like many from the fansites, were so upset as this was such a big deal to the core of the movie. The chemistry was not there from the start, unlike Twilights Saga, when all the actors mirrored the charactors in the book and became them, leaving us wanting more. They had a small budget, but were true to the book therfore fans continued to go to the movies many times ,over and over. We were able to buy merchandise and go to events with the actors present to talk to. I'm sorry the Host failed to promote their film better but without the chemistry failed .to make us happy with their film ..

  • Joel says:

I have to say that the marketing for the film appeared to be deeply troubled. While there was a lot of enthusiasm from Twilight fans -- and the many Twilight fan websites that helped create such a monster hit -- the company that was in charge of promoting the film online seemed to simply drop the ball after the first check cleared. Fan sites complained, and were met with a deafening silence.

All in all, a deep disappointment. The film company should have just hired the Twilight Lexicon ladies to handle the online promotion. Would have been huge. HUGE!

    • Barb says:

I am certain Stephanie will write the next two books "Soul" and "Seeker". and they will sell millions of books.I can hardly wait..I just will never see another movie if one is made. My imagination is my guide on this book! She stated syfy was her preference at this time....

  • Emily says:

I really enjoyed the book can't wait to go see the movie I am going this Thursday to see and from what I see on the internet of the movie and picture and videos I think that I will really like the movie and the charters movies will not be able to put everything from the book into the movie its impossible and I am voted for a second and third movie and book can't wait I love the HOST!!!!

  • Lily says:

I really don't get it, i didn't read the book, but this movie? I loved it! I even cried when the two have sacrificed themselves against the wall for not being caught, that was amazing! And the cast was good, they all had their emotions.
Haters gonna hate but that movie was amazing!

  • Letta says:

I saw the movie first, and I loved it. The scenery was beautifully done, the cast was well chosen and had good chemistry together, and the story flowed smoothly. I read the book and was gripped by it. There were some scenes that I noticed were changed in the movie, but I think the switches were appropriate due to budget and time constraints. We must remember that any movie based on a book is an interpretation of it, and things are not always the same. Harry Potter was a classic example, the more involved the books got the less similar the movies became to the book. Yet the basic storyline and message they were trying to portray was unchanged, and I felt that the Host accomplished this as well. The best books make us think about our convictions and decisions in life, and this was accomplished for me with this book. I also thought the storyline was original and well thought out, which again are necessary for a good story. This is a book I would read multiple times.

So Stephanie...Hurry up and finish the sequel! Whether another movie is made or not (they left a great opening for it at the end, I hope they use it) I eagerly await the next book in this series. Stephanie's writing has come a long way. I threw the Twilight book in disgust at the immaturity of the writing, and I was hesitant to read the Host. I was pleasantly surprised at the changes in her writing for this set of books, and I hope that the story continues.

    • Holly says:

I totally agree with everything you say. I mean, twilight is always going to be seen as the epic story it is, however, I found The Host so much more interesting because of the way in which you can understand why aliens would deem it necessary to take over due to the violence our people use towards each other. I really don't understand how the film hasn't done as well financially as Twilight because I think it concept is really unlike any other as usually when aliens take over, humanity wins in the end.

For me seeing the film can be a real let down because it can ruin the way in which you pictured something to happen, however, with the Host, I had that happiness and fulfilment that I felt when I first watched Twilight when I was 13.

The only point that made me love Twilight more was the idea that it had more films to come and you see the relationships develop further and growing up as Twilight unfolded made the last film so outstanding to feel that strong bond. Now there is a possibility that the Host can unfold like this, I'm so excited, but in a discussion I realised that because of the dangerous world in which the story is set in, people may die and nobody wants to see any of the main character die. However, seeing the true relationship between Melanie and Wanda develop and with their partners would be amazing to see, I just hope after all inevitable fighting that will be included, the ending will be a happy one.

I like Stephanie Meyer my wife liked all the twilight books and movie. The fact is there was some blockbuster elements missing in her book The Host and unfortunately it translated on film . Hell , I noticed all the messing pieces from watching the trailer. The Host book lacked structure all good writers like Stan Lee know a few things about that , Steven King, and J k Rowling know about story Structure. I think Stephanie Meyer has talent as a writer ,but She is lacking on story structure the first 200 pages of The Host book was so boring that I feel asleep twice; now that's a dame shame 200 pages of nothing really. I went on reading the Book and gave her a pass; since it was some what different. The truth it was not her best work she was writing as if she was just trying to make the story longer even though the story was not truly coming to light. The biggest problem was the lack of conflict ,and the main characters fell to evolve every time in when she write her stories. she never make them express conflict that is real in all love story conflict most be present. When I married my wife I found out there would be conflict ,action ,adventure saga continues that's real life shit. Fiction has rules she never goes by those rule of fiction. Lastly, what I don't like about Stephanie Meyers is that she do not like to say she messed up. The truth is this was a poorly written love story that was told off base reality point of view. where the individual choice is of no value ,and the writing is saying that a person opinion does not count in a crazy kind of way like a mental patient that needs to be placed on medication. We live not to think better of our humanity ,so the aliens force us to brain prison lock down with in our own bodies as they do what ever they please with your body. mankind is no more the world is saved our reality has just been destroyed by the writer and the aliens poor humanity. Where was the conflict if there ever was a conflict in the first place. The story was dry from the very beginning ,and the movie director should have told her that when he read the book himself. If he didn't read the book shame on him, so I place all the blame on her at her feet its her job to make me want to read more of her story The Host fail to do that . Stephanie if you reading this start fresh take your time and give me something real good to read ,because I love you girlfriend . I just have to be honest though this was not a blockbuster film story at all. sorry gang.. I have to tell the truth.

      • Joel Emmett says:

I think you have some good points.

If they'd included scenes of Wanda's other planets -- so it would have been like Avatar x 8 -- that would have been really exciting and fun to watch.

But I don't think they had the budget for that.

I think The Host was a beautiful movie... we might critic the cast but the concept of the film was still there
all i could think of and the end of the movie was i hope there is a sequel??? And i jumped on the internet to find out... id be very dissapointed if there isnt

  • first off I didnt read the book... however i had been eagerly awaiting the movie since i had read the description.. i had worried that the movie wouldnt be able to protray the story vary well but I personally thought the movie was great and that they did a good job the ending was also awsome it had me thinking oh no not one of those semi-sad endings but then made it into a good ending 🙂 and i hope that there will be a sequel.. to all those with negative views/reviews/thoughts on the movie try a different perspective ... the movie is the directors envisionin of the book..not our envisioned version ...

  • Mickie Devereux says:

Far better book than Twilight ever was. Oh and all you Twihards.....Go read some Anne Rice. That's proper fanged literature.

  • Vincent says:

I really liked the movie! why was it not in theathers in the Nederlands? Please make a part 2, me and my girl friend will go 😉

  • Jack says:

Steph Meyer fans are idiots. Her work is embarrassingly bad and u people would know that if u read more and soaked in better cinema. Pathetic.

    • Joel says:

Ur assessment is embarrassingly bad and u would write better yourself if u were soaked in better English. "Pathetic."

      Don't be a troll, Jack.

  • Kerie Reese says:

I loves the book, I read it 3 times before I even knew there was going to be a movie. I just watched it and it was great. I agree that some was left out but agree it's like the Harry potter series books vs movies. I really can't wait for the next book and I don't care if they make more movies as long as the books get published! Well that is it would be nice to see them made to movies but most important to me is the story so im eagerly awaiting the books! It may not be for everyone but there are enough people that liked it that that should be enough. If you don't like something there is no reason to hate on it, just don't watch/read any more of it. My mother taught me if I can't say something nice then keep my mouth shut but apparently not everyone learned that lesson.
