'Star Wars Episode 7': Is The Force With The Ladies For A Change?

Star Wars Episode 7

Despite the fact that Princess Leia is every bit as iconic as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the fact remains that the entire Star Wars series has a total of five women with speaking roles, and only three of them — Padme/Amidala, Leia, and Anakin's mother — count as major characters. It's no wonder then, that Anakin had to be conceived by the Force itself, since apparently, there aren't enough women in the Star Wars galaxy to populate a trailer park, much less a multi-planet republic, by normal means.

But could the force finally be with the double-X chromosome squad for a change? If a cryptic tweet from Slashfilm's Peter Sciretta hasn't been misunderstood, the answer is a solid "possibly"!

'Star Wars Episode 7' Plot Possibilities
Now obviously, we're still very much in early speculation mode for Star Wars Episode VII. Will it be burping- and Jar Jar-free? Will it be based in-part on the Expanded Universe? Will we see aging stoner Harrison Ford playing an elderly Han Solo, like The Dude? Who knows?! But speculation is the fuel on which the Internet runs, so far be it for me to say anything other than 'yes, all those things will be true.'

The biggest mystery is, of course, just who the new films are going to be about. Everything, from the children of our original heroes, to the further adventures of Geriatric Luke, has been baselessly suggested, but Disney is keeping mum for now. Of course, even if Disney is bringing the full power of their enormous secrets-keeping machine to bear (seriously, how did they keep the Star Wars deal a secret for so long?), now that Episode VII is almost certainly in the full flower of pre-production, tidbits are bound to come out.

Enter Sciretta, who tweeted this circumspect comment Thursday afternoon:

According to a Slashfilm  Star Wars round-up post by Germain Lussier on Friday morning, Sciretta asked that this tweet be added to the article, but that “he couldn't say anymore,” which strongly suggests he knows something specific, or at least wants us to think he does. The comment could be taken in any number of ways, of course. He might simply mean they'll be casting a relatively unknown male actor in the lead. But the fact that he felt the need to specify male, rather than leave the question of gender blank, suggests the tantalizing possibility of a female lead.

And yes, the sound you hear is millions of voices, crying out, "About damned time."

As for who this character could possibly be, don't look to the established Star Wars Expanded Universe for answers. The official canon is incredibly convoluted at best.  (See for yourself here.)  It's a tiered system in which the movies, and George Lucas himself, overrides everything else. Sure, we might see fan favorite Mara Jade, or even Leia and Han's daughter Jaina, but given that public statements suggest the new films will plot their own course, I expect a completely new character.

Assuming for a moment that Episode VII will mine the Expanded Universe, who would you like to see take the postulated female lead? Let us know, and feel free to argue about continuity, in comments.

Maybe incorporate Galen Marek aka Starkiller and Juno Eclipse from TFU. Since it seems there isn't going to be a TFU3...we can assume those characters are still around. Could be interesting to see Starkiller training Jedi.....

  • BW says:

I counted 11 female speaking roles off the top of my head, but there could be more: Leia, Padme/Amidala, Schmi, Jocasta Nu, Dorme, Corde, Oola, Naboo female fighter pilot, Sy Snootles, Mon Mothma, Beru...

Now in a failed assination attempt on the life of Lando Calrissian by a criminal some thought to have been dead for many years tries to escape the alerted republican guards.......

    .....now the basic plot......

  • wildcard says:

A chase begins as the criminal ( Manno Fett ) fails to kill Lando ( hes been trying for years to kill the ones who killed his dad bobba in part 6 ) and is trying to get away. The republican security guards are chasing him around the planet up into space but is unable to destroy him. Just when he thinks he gets away, ( to the movie fan surprise ) Han and Chewy in the famous falcon with their old buddies in the old X-wings are able to capture him. ( Hans hair is shaved with tatoos on the side of his face as markings of his captures being the greates bounty hunter-like dog the bounty hunter show). When captured, Han and Chewy realizes that Manno is not a clone like Jango and Boba were. So they take him to the famous prison that holds the galaxies most dangerous criminal ( Cloud City )........then skip skip to...

  • wildcard says:

When Han and Chewy arive back they are greeted by Luke and family etc, etc.., and a quick award in their honr happens as Manno Fett is finally behind bars...After the entire family gathers together ( the only time you see this on film ) they walk up through a sort of hall of fame tunnel ( artifacts of history from episodes 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 ) to watch the famous space race.( A race that started after ep 6 to honor the fallen who perished during the battle of Endor and the destruction of the Death Star. Before the race, Han passes his ship over to his older son Jacen. Him along with his best friend Lando Jr aka chance and his brother ( the super machanic) Ben they upgrade the ship.....then....

  • wildcard says:

A fantastic space race begins ( sort of like the pod race but much more faster and never seen on film before ). So after the ships fly all over the planet ( whatever name ) and the moons and the astroids and whatever else there is, the race is about to end......However, right before it ends, Darth Spiden and his minions attack and break up the race that leads to a war. A battle is fought from smaller fast ships to quick lightsaber battles, Darth Spiden uses this decoy to go after jedi holocrauns that have been secretly kept somewhere in the hall of fame museum. Luke is unaware like others how he knew this. When they succeed, Spiden and the others left get away. however one of the minons tries to activate a massive toxic bomb but han ( in a small cruise ) rams his ship into it a blows it up before it destroys the city. Han becomes the title of the movie The Fallen Hero...( remember harrison ford wanted to die as a hero in episode 6 so now he gets to here ). And the city is renamed Han Solo City to honor him....then....

  • wildcard says:

Then Luke assembles the Jedi and Republic fighter on a massive hunt to eliminate these new evil minons.....And of couse later after some blah blah here and there get to know more about the characters, Luke learns of a sith planet never heard of before called Korriban....And learns about the sith king that took power there a few years after Return of the Jedi.....He also learns that the king Lord Asp has been waiting patiently to fight and kill this so called chosen one he thinks is Luke. He thinks that Luke killed Vadar and Sidious but Vadar is the one who tossed Sidious to his death and got redeamed. No one knows what excatly happen but Luke. Although rumors and stories over the years make people believe that Luke is the chosen on. Some think he killed them to take control himself....then...

  • wildcard says:

Then after more jedi fighting and battles Luke learns that Lord Asp was the teacher of a famous sith legend called Darth Plagius Da White who was the one that used the dark side of the force to pregnate a few women in a village. But only one survived and had a baby boy. Anakin. The false Prophet. Then Luke and Lord Asp fight each other with their lightsabers ( Asp has a black one with black light ) and Luke green of couse. Luke defeats him and when the daughter of Lord Asp, ( Empress Xaya ), here about it she is not waiting anymore and calls for the dark jedi army to lauch a galaxy wide destrution of all who is against the sith. Luke also learns that the dark jedi ( name whatever ) are descendants of the children that were captured in the jedi temple by another sith warrior. ( remember the ones who were not taken died by Anakins wrath in episode 3 ).......then....

  • wildcard says:

Then after a few more blah blah and seeing Ben Solo and his best friend become Jedi masters at the end Luke not only learns that Darth Spiden id Vadars student on revenge to end him but also learns that one of Leias children has the highest mediorclorian count ever. More powerful that Vadar, Yoda, Luke, Obi-Wan, Mace Windu etc combined. For this child is the chosen one who would destroy the greatest sith leader and the dark armies of the galaxy and bring peace and love forever. ( we dont see that until part 9 ).........so here is the quick thing....

  • wildcard says:

The first trilogy was about the rise and fall of the first skywalker ( false prophet Anakin )....The second trilogy was about the rise and redemption of the second skywalker ( Luke )....The third trilogy is about the rise and stand of the third skywalker ( the chosen one )..........and my names of the trilogy would be...........Episode 7 The Fallen Hero..... Episode 8 Rise Of A New Dawn......Episode 9 Victory Of The Force..............( quick secret ending to my movie since im a nobody who wont be able to direct this anyway DAM IT.....Princess Leia had two sons...The third son died at birth...When Leia wasnt able to have anymore children, the mediorclorians coceived Jaina. Leia would take this secret with her when she died in Episode 8....Mara Jade wolud be the teacher of Jaina.....In epidisode 8 you would see what the Jedi trials look like.....At the end of 8, Ben would be betrayed and killed by his friend ( like Lucas did with Anakin and Vadar until he made them as one)......Luke dies in 9 by Darth Spiden just like Obi_wan died in 4 passing the torch over to Jaina.....Jacen and Lando Jr dies in 9.....Most will die throughout 7,8 and 9......Also in 9, the sand people unite behind Darth Spiden believing that he is their prophecy leader. Spiden has two lightsabers that are like bull whips and when he uses them they move around so fast it appears as if he has spider legs..........At the end of 9 Jaina kills Spiden and destroys the dark jedi and sand people.....The final scene is when the chose one is looking into the new world of peace with R2D2 and C3PO standing on each side........and dam im done typing cause i have soo much to tell but im tired......Disney if you cant find a director let me do it...I will do it for freeeeeeee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........Oh yea anyone still reading this at this point thank you regardless if you like it or not my fingers are tired......Bless to the Star Wars fans around the world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Ron says:

It's very possible given that some of the film titles were variants on a theme, like "Return of the Jedi" and "Revenge of the Sith", that the title for this film may simply be: "Star Wars Episode 7: A New Threat". That would be somewhat of a twist on the title "A New Hope".

    • Anymouse says:

Seriously? Do you realize that the "Sith King" Couldn't exist because of the rule of two, and who the hell kills Han Freaking Solo? And another midicholorian baby? Anakin wasn't even one of those in the first place, lets not even get started with the tuscans..

      • eted says:

The Rule of Two was Darth Bane's deal, there is nothing to say that this didn't die with Vader and Sidious, and that new Sith, inspired by their holocrons everywhere (Massassi Temple/what inspired Bane to destroy the Brotherhood of Darkness and begin the Rule of Two in the first place) and/or the biological Sith on Korriban would rise in the power vacuum.

  • Robert says:

I vote Guinevere for the lead

  • Ron says:

More than likely the female leads could be Mara Jade, Jaina Solo, or Leia. It's going to be cool but simple like it has always been....for the most part.

  • Carlos says:

Yeah I always wanted a female lead for Star Wars, thats what I cared about most in the series. HALLELUJAH!!! -__-

  • 70ren says:

Jaina Solo and her brother Jacen!

  • Mythrawn says:

Well since at this time pretty sure Jacen already killed Mara and in turn Jaina killed her brother ... anakin was already dead ... so that cuts out most of them ..... just sayin

Would have loved for them to do the Thrawn trilogy ... or Star Killer

  • lanfear45 says:

Ya but leave it to Disney to cheese it out and screw it up -_-

The news that more star wars was on it's way has turned my secret Star Wars identity -I'm the child-prodigy glowing-eyed girl who met George in '85 cast in his duck disaster movie he decided to make into a daughter character for Han & Leia that inspired Jaina Solo's tragic hero profile? It was my idea that Han & Leia were my long lost parents, abused by my mom when I was cast in his film I dared to tell only George about my scary home life and how I recognised my galactic family, it was my way of coping and having hope -but he took it oddly seriously. He was my guardian for a short time, the author of the novels used the name Jaina & my martyr/save the day fearlessly self as her storyline based on word through the grapevine about the "Earth Orphan" that George camouflaged as a living character in his factual fictional universe -I was precocious and verbally sarcastic to his calm creative acceptably crazy mentoring time with me, I did things in random order & ended up with perfection -the start at 3 go to one and change who they are as you go order of Sci -fi random star wars storyline George created is the way both of us think. I'm the reality check to his imaginary factual though, it was like I knew the truth but all in his head made me get that wrong? He told me I truly was the solo daughter I identified to be, I said stop teasing me -then I vowed to my new factual fictional identity under my galactic birthright. It was 1985, I was all the things Jaina is known to be, no longer human. I vowed until infinity I think, and have a medal from the props used in the last sceen of sw that he put around my neck. I still have it, it's like a security blanket feels in a child's arms, my sw medal virtual blanky... This happened years ago, over a few months while the film was shot, it earned fame for it's status as an epic bomb and I don't like to say it's title other than the Duck movie mess George didn't fail with, I saw it recently on cable -they re-edit it every few years and I peek at it in memory and amusement -the part where she's in bed with the duck has me laughing in horror -George had me watch them film that and tried to show me how silly it was, it seemed wrong so I set out to find out why. I got the answer from the bible, animals with people seemed wrong to God also -& there was a word for it being wrong I

THE POWER OF SPECULATION, MY FRIENDS! Unbelievable that many think that the lead protagonist will be a female, just because one guy doesn't give even the vaguest hint of who(what) the protagonist might be. Unbelievable. I fully believe that the protagonist will probably be male, since the whole franchise has always set up the male being involved as the lead role. Now, i believe there is the possiblity that there might be a co-lead role with both a male and female protagonist ("Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" comes to mind) but i highly doubt that the department would risk there being a solo female protagonist role, mainly because of tradition of there being a male lead protragonist in the Star Wars sega, not female. For the risk of being accused sexist, the line 'if it's not broken don't fix it', comes to mind when it comes to star wars; then again the prequels did wreck the franchise, so the franchise might need some fine tuning to get it operational again.

  • snark1250 says:

Before Star Wars, George Lucas directed a 40-year-old, 1960s-set musical drama called American Graffiti - how some films changed with the ages since Wolfman Jack introduced the rare musical selections of the 1950s and early 1960s throughout the entire motion picture. Good thing Wolfman Jack asked the question moviegoers answered the same year: "Where were you in '62?"

  • Penance says:

Millions of voices, crying out "about damn time"? Really? I only hear millions if not hundreds of millions speaking out indifference. More than likely people are saying, "I don't care either way as long as its good. May the character either be female OR MALE."
