Erin Andrews on Yet Another Outrageous Dancing with the Stars Dismissal: 'I'm Getting Blamed!'

Erin Andrews started our weekly Dancing with the Stars recap interview with the following greeting: "Um. Hello?!" It was appropriate: We've officially reached the finale of the most insane DWTS season ever. Join us as we chat with the ESPN heroine about last night's elimination, her feelings about the final three, and the flood of (unjustified) hate-Tweets she's received about the outcome.

Well, Erin, craziness happened again the other night.

It is crazy. If you had asked me last night when it was down to Brandy and Bristol, I never would've guessed this is what we'd be talking about today.

Let's start at the beginning with the easier subjects: Jennifer Grey earned two perfect scores. Do you almost feel bad for her and how great she's doing because it's possible the rug will be pulled out from her during the finale?

No, because that's what happened with Nicole. At this point in our season last year she was just knocking out everything. So, no. Obviously she's got the scores and she has the votes by her fans to keep her in.

Plus, they have to do a triumphant "(I've Had the) Time of My Life" dance next week, right?

I think they're going to have to. You've got to be kidding me! If we have four routines that they have to do, they've got to throw in something. Give us a little bit of "(I've Had the) Time of My Life." Are you kidding me?!

Um, after this season, we deserve to see that routine.

We deserve it! [Laughs.]

How did you feel about your man Kyle Massey's work this week?

I thought he was phenomenal. I loved it. The "bionic booty" was one of the greatest lines in the world. If I ever got that title, I think I'd be happy with my life. He was wonderful. I think what I enjoy even more about him, and the judges said it perfectly, there's just no drama with him. His packages are always hysterical. It's so cute about him -- when they're waiting for scores or he's talking with Brooke, he just has this precious smile on his face and a funny laugh. I was talking to Niecy Nash last night after the show, and I was telling her the other reason I think I like him because he's so loud and doesn't realize it. And that's exactly how I am.

Before we descend into a real discussion about Brandy and Maks's elimination, let's talk about their dances. How'd you feel they did? You'll remember they scored a perfect 30 once.

I thought they did great. As always, they were very, very solid. The paso she did, she just showed that aggression and attitude. The paso is very angry, and I thought it was perfect. I just really, really enjoyed her paso a lot. With the Argentine Tango, I actually thought they had great luck because those are Maks's strongest dances that he choreographs. Those were my two favorite dances that I did with him. They also obviously got the encore, which was wonderful. I thought the judges did a great job scoring them. And she was really good. One thing she did great with this week was her emotions. She chilled out a bit, and she even referenced it when she was getting her scores. Now, I will tell you a little side note, my friend. Our little Movieline chat last week caused a big, big stir with Brandy's fans. I got some not-so-nice tweets about that.

Oh, God.

Oh, you have no idea! Brandy had to call off the hounds and tell everyone to just relax. It's kind of funny, because if you watched the show last night, Mark Ballas said the same exact thing I said in that pre-produced package. You can just tell how bad she wants it. Then they showed all these shots of her closing her eyes and being really intense. I never said that as a bad thing! That's too bad that people misinterpreted it. My whole thing is -- and I'm sure I'll get criticized again -- is I wanted her to enjoy the experience for what it is. It doesn't matter if you win the mirror ball trophy or not. It's about having the best experience and making the most out of the journey. But oh my goodness, I didn't know that was such a terrible thing to say. And now I'm getting blamed for her losing as well! I appreciated her performance this week. I thought she did a very good job and was really relatable to fans at home. I thought this was probably the most real we saw her throughout the entire season.

Well, people would have to be idiots to blame you for Brandy's elimination. It's pretty obvious that Bristol has a big voting machine behind her, Kyle's become an underdog favorite, and that means a consistently solid competitor like Brandy is bound to fall through the cracks at the last moment.

And also, don't blame it on me -- I put my votes in! Give me a break! I saw Brandy and Maks on Good Morning America this morning and on Jimmy Kimmel last night, and they were saying, "People say 'I don't want that person to win,' and then they don't vote for the person they want to win.'" I went on Good Morning America on Tuesday morning and talked about Bristol, and they asked me, "Is there a conspiracy?" And I said, "No! She's just getting more votes! People are flooding the phone lines to vote for her!" At this point, all the negative publicity that she's getting -- all the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, "She shouldn't be there!", Rick and Kurt and Brandy were robbed! -- I think this has helped her. From my standpoint, I felt like after she did her first dance on Monday, she got some of the loudest applause in the ballroom. I feel like now, people just feel bad. Is it her fault that she's gone out there and done the best she can do? No. She knows she's not the best dancer. She said that. It's pretty obvious. But is it her fault that people are flooding the phone lines for her? No! In the end, what is she supposed to do? "I can't take all this negative criticism. I'm going to quit." No! What has she done wrong? I think there are a lot of people who feel bad for her, and they think, "You know what, I'm going to vote for her." I feel bad!

Your beloved Maks was eliminated. He has still never won the mirror ball trophy. How would you describe your feelings about what happened with him?

I'm heartbroken for Maks. Despite what Brandy's fans feel about me, I clearly thought they were going to win the whole thing. I said that the first time he had her. I even texted him that. "You've got it. You're going to win." As much as we say, "It's a TV show!" it's also part of his profession. You always want to be considered the best at your profession. I feel personally bad that I wasn't able to get him the mirror ball. You feel a little regret there as well. I'm very sad for Maks. He works so hard and does nothing but try to make his stars feel so comfortable and beautiful. He makes sure they feel prepared. Many times, these pro dancers do so much more than teach you a routine. They are your friend, and really, your best friend throughout the whole thing. For me, because I didn't know LA, Maks helped me get adjusted to a new area. He helped me with so much more than on the dance floor, and it sounds like from everything Brandy has said, like "I have a friend for life" -- he was the same way with her. In that respect, you know the work he put into this season. You just love that he's in it to win it. He has a lot of pride. I feel so bad.

Interesting that Brandy asked her fans to back off the hateful tweets to Erin, but Erin would add fuel to the fire and reply when a negative Brandy tweet was sent to her. Erin didn't nip that in the bud and she should have. I saw nothing wrong with Brandy wanting this win so badly and I never saw a bad attitude or incessant whininess that others saw. Her elimination is just further proof that America rewards mediocrity....allowing Bristol into the finals. The judges should have been giving her the Master P level scores that she deserved instead of sugar-coating everything.
I was a diehard Erin fan last season, but her snarkiness about Brandy this season has left me cold. If she truly respected Maks, she would respect his new partner and leave out the backhanded compliments. She just had to keep bringing the subject back to her. Can you say 'narcissist'? P.S. Erin? Dirty Dancing was about the dumbest movie EVER!!! But I'm sure Jennifer will milk the Patrick Swayze nostalgia to get the win from Kyle.

Hello..it's a heavily produced reality show. Erin has experienced the show as a participant and a viewer. I got the impression she had studied the show just as she does her college games before she danced her first step. In other words, she has a clue how things work on that particular show and how things have typically played out. I think she gave very insightful comments to help all of the contestants. How people are perceived in their packages influences how people vote. How one dances is only one element--how the public reacts to the dancers has been seen to be more important than the judges votes (which I found very interesting this season) Blaming Erin for Brandy and Maks being voted off the show is Crazy. Ya gotta rock the vote and EA rocks!

  • Catherine says:

Did you keep a close eye on her twitter feed or something? She got death threats, that's a big deal. Over a freaking dancing show! And like I said, she has every right to voice her opinion against the lunatics.

  • Erin another good article doing just what you were asked to do.I think you were spot on about everything you said and even some of the pros repeated your very statements when asked their opinions. I guess I always thought that DWTS was pros teaching stars how to dance and judges scoring them according to how well they did their dance (stars being graded on how well they did ) not the pros,I think that has all gone by the wayside and now it is more of a variety show with all the gimmicks the producers can think up.If that is the direction this show is taking then what does that say for the pro teachers, why should they spend all their time and energy into some great choreography and never get credit for what they do This is turning out to be more of a popularity contest. These pros work hard and are very passionate about their work and I think at times some of them make beautiful dancers out of some stars that have two left feet and they can't even whistle and skip at the same time.they should be commened for their work God bless them all( they make the show)That is why I enjoy watching the show.
I think this year the producers have totaly destroyed the show with all the gimmicks and I say "if it ain't broke don't fix it"Also if the public is going to be allowed to vote then it should be fair and square. Several times this season when voting by phones you were only able to vote 1 time and then your call wouldn't go through anymore unless you were voting for the people ABC wanted you to vote for Discusting!!
I was very sad about the elimination of Brandy and Maks this week I have nothing against the other couples that are left just doesn't make sense for them to fall from first to last so fast??I do not think Maks's outburst should have had anything to do with it, he was merely protecting his partner like all the pros
have done. If infact this is the case there again you are judging the pro and not the star
I think its a shame how Erin is getting all these hateful and insensative remarks about being jealous of Brandy she is doing a job she was asked to do and very well I must add and she in no way had anything to do with Maks and Brandy getting eliminated she even tweeted for her twitter friends to vote for them. As far as Maks and Brandy Maks has always treated his partners the same and that is what he is doing again this season. He is a gentleman and he is also a pro and thats why he gets so passionate when judges judge him instead of his partner he did it last year with Erin too(Len judged him when he took his shirt off)I wish the couples that are left the best of luck and if it is possible I think it should be judged by the public as to who is the best dancer! If this show doesn't go back to the platform it started out with they just might soon find out they will have alot less viewers

Since DWTS has become a popularity contest, I want Betty White to be on the next season.
In regards to Erin she should quiet down about how Brady dealt with DWTS. Because someone last year could have easily said that they were tired of your I'm a victim/Is she isn't she dating Maks bs .

  • Elise says:

    SOOOOOOO TRUEEEEEE

  • Anna says:

A ton of us cold. It bothered me so much I looked at Erin's twitter account. I only saw one that stated she should stay away from Maks and that she is bad luck. Wow, where's all the "hounds"? And why would that lead her to believe its a Brandy fan? Maybe its a Maks fan. In all honestly I don't think anyone is thinking about Erin at anytime during Maks' season with Brandy.

  • anonymously says:

Show ratings are up, voting is up, the show has gotten more attention than ever, I say give Bristol the mirror ball and a bonus. Now would be a good time for Brandy to come out with a new album. Kyle is so funny, I'm sure he will be more in demand with his career.

  • fishintruth says:

Erin is just jealous because Brandy is getting along so well with Maks. Maxs is a great dancer and instructor. He is passionate about his work. He helps to build confidence and joy in his dancers. Erin and Brandy both had negative life experiences and he seemed to help them regain confidence. Bristol was wrong to use Maxs name to get sympathy votes. You have to have some people like Jennifer who can set the pole up for the dancers to really have competition. Yet when someone who dances at Bristols level uses tactics to win its wrong. All other challenged dancers bowed out graciously. Hasselhoff was a little shocked but he made a jokes. Michael Bolton was a little hurt at Bruno's too caustic remarks but he stayed gracious. Kelly Osbourne was super. She really worked hard. Bristol faked at first for sympathy. Then she showed true self to be vicious calling others fakes like her mom does. Anyone knew she could shake better than that. She's no little girl. She's a grown woman with a child who played football in hs with the boys. I don't have a prob with her size but she said she worked her butt off. Not so. She hasn't even worked hard. She even gained weight. Everyone loses or tones. Now she can be a contestant on Dance Your Off. I wonder how they will cheat on that. Something happened behind the scenes as well because the judges started overscoring her. Kurt, Flo, Rick made far more personal progress and their scores didn't jump that much. Robo voting was done. The story will come out like it did about the backstabbing of John McCain by the Palin camp for their personal agenda. I really hate they used this for political agenda because DWTS was one of few show that bonded people and families could watch together. Many kids participtate on dance teams and need to see more positive things.

  • ANONYMOUSLY says:

ERIN YOU ARE A JEALOUS FEMALE AND HATED HOW GOOD BRANDY LOOKED WITH MAK.YOU'LL NEVER LOOK THAT GOOD WITH HIM IN YOUR LIFE.YOU MAKE HIM LOSE LOOKS STANDING NEXT TO HIM CAUSE YOU LOOK LIKE A FAKE WORN OUT HAD FEMALE.

  • Goulash says:

Faye says Bristol isn't even a Star, but Faye is wrong: Bristol is a star NOW, isn't she?
FishinTruth, are you implying that ABC was paid off by the Sarah Palin for president groups?
Neither Maks nor Brandy had good, sizzling chemistry; last season, Erin and Maks danced together and they were HOT and smoldering--even so, they made it to the finals and lost to both Evan and Nicole (who won the whole thing). So maybe Brandy fans needn't blame Erin for causing Brandy to be eliminated. It might just be the fact that the viewing audience favors others more than they do him (although he certainly does have thousands of fans who adore him and can't get enough of him).
Erin does seem jealous, but I think it's understandable. She's starting to understand that Maks is the type who makes every woman - er, "star" --- feel ultra-special. Even though Maks acted much less affectionate and loving with Brandy than he did with Erin, Erin didn't see that. I don't think her reaction was all that unusual.

  • Well, about a year ago USA was sinking like a broken ship and all of you bitching about DWTS, were worried about : "FREE HEALTH CARE", raise taxes and hopping to get everybody's money to share the wealth. Social Security drained with illegals bigger chunk in a form of financial assistance-person working 40 years receiving SS benefits is less than some crossing the border year ago with 9 kids, while draining the country off etc...
All this has awakened the sleeping giant and now those-same as bitching about DWTS not going the way some people wished, Wow bloody-murder.
Get real and get on with life, if Bristol wins she deserves it same as any other on the show.
    I vote for Bristol!
    want

  • No Faye is RIGHT! says:

Really did you read what Maks said about Brandy in his blog, this is the SECOND time he's talked about Brandy and how amazing she is in his blog. You are BLIND if you can't see the apparent chemistry between them. Did you not see them on Jimmy Kimmel? Of course you didn't, She had her hand on his thigh and he was rubbing her hand. Did you see them back stage at the view? Why is it so hard to believe Maks could have feelings for Brandy? Some people just can't admit that Maks could be down with the swirl. Bristol still isn't a star, she a teen who got knocked up and her mom got her on a TV show. She can't dance, her face has no emotion and if she got to where she is by actual merit why are so many people THIS upset?

  • Jim STFU! says:

Jim it's a dancing show not a political forum. This just proves that people are voting for Bristol because of who her mother is and what her mother's politics are. If you can't separate a dancing show from politics then you need to be heavily medicated. I weep for the future.

  • Common Sense says:

If Bristol Palin was a class act, she would withdraw from the competition after the next dance but before the judging. This is Dancing With The Stars, not Voting With The Clowns.
But, the show producers are reveling in the controversy for the ratings and ad bonanza. It will get worse. Next season expect more political hacks and similar "celebrities".

  • Britt Zmolek says:

Who are they!? Have you heard of da Youngfellaz from NY? I keep looking around for them and only see them on this newricheffect.net site but dont know if they actually performing around.

  • nps says:

This conspiracy theory are all full of bull if you love to see your favorite dancer you should have voted for her or him. Don't blame it on Bristol she and Mark probobly have a huge loyal fan base ready and willing to vote anytime for them. The lesson learn here is VOTE does count. Dont worry be happy

  • Dancer says:

Brandy is a solo act. She didn't relate to her partner, who is an excellent dancer. In ballroom dance it's the couple that makes it flow. Brandy just uses Max as a prop for her gymnastics. I'm glad that the voters keep Bristol on the show. I look forward to her improvement each week. And, of course, I watch to enjoy Jennifer Grey's wonderful talent.

  • Notmuchofafan says:

Like her mother, Bristol has made a lot of progress for someone with very little talent. If the audience isn't supposed to matter, the audience should not be allowed a vote. Obviously, that is not the case.

  • accolade says:

wow, good point. I saw this jealous weeks ago, hyped up by ET.
Isn't it sort of odd that Erin is the only contestant from last season still in the news where it should be Brandy being the story.

  • accolade says:

    that's bull sh|t.
Everyone loves a couple who's focus on the goal of winning and beating out their opponents.
It shows that they are dedicated. This isn't something new to America or TV in the last 20 years.
Do anyone remember MTV's The Real World vs Road Rule challenge shows. Coral Smith and Mike Mizanin from completely different backgrounds, who had tension on their season of the Real World became the best of friends near the end and became unbelievably great teamed couple on the challenge shows that followed.
I think the only people who hate to see strong wielding Black women are either the jealous type if that Black woman happens to be paired up with a non-Black male, or are just racist and they hate regardless.

  • accolade says:

and so do us "lunatics" in voicing our opinion.
It's funny how you call us Brandy and Maks supporters all these asinine adjectives and yet you're supporting Bristol because you prefer underachievement over achievement.
This notion of Bristol showing the most improvement is the biggest myth I seen flying around the web these past weeks. She's shown the least improvement between her and all the celebrity contestants eliminated (save Hoff and Bolten).
