American Idol Recap: Finding the No. 1 Among No. 1's

Ugh. Good try, season nine, but last night's performances of Billboard's No. 1 hits felt more like a sad carnival concert of dated ballads, stale beer and overplayed Best of the '70s jams that belong nowhere near the charts in 2010. Even with the guidance of ageless warlord Miley Cyrus, the contestants seemed lost and a little lonely during their performances, with stupid falsettos and nervous sweats once again threatening our good time. Still, we've got your Idol performances ranked worst-to-first after the jump.

11. Paige Miles, "Against All Odds"

Paige Miles has an undeniable gift -- for choosing ballads that she can't sing. Guh-her! There's not a single novel quality left in "Against All Odds," and Paige didn't add a thing to it. She's following the blueprint of some woebegone season-two contestant whose identity is wrapped up in serviceable takes on standards and bland hits. Take your Charlie Chaplin songbook and hide in the nearest hat and mustache, Paige.

10. Andrew Garcia, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"

Khaki-coated peanut M&M Andrew Garcia is not haunted by his stupid-ass-train-station-breakdown version of "Straight Up." No, Kara. He's haunted by hokey stage presence, hilarious coos and the dance moves of an average youth-group administrator. This man shouldn't be leading the charts -- he should be leading scrawny preteens in cah-RAZY a cappella prayers. Marvin Gaye requires regular healing in addition to sexual now.

9. Katie Stevens, "Big Girls Don't Cry

Katie Stevens did her "I can young it up!" thing this week, opting to pick a tune that could've made her sound like she was born in the past 20 years. But as much as Randy Jackson insists that Idol is a singing competition, Katie proves it's not; She can sing, but she can't connect with a song, make it her own or make it memorable. And those qualities will be her downfall, eventually -- not her voice. As for sounding "beyond her years," as others keep claiming, I think Katie sounds like what she is: A 17-year-old reaching for relevance through her surprisingly deep tone. She's not there. Use a stepstool, dear. Or a Siobhan Magnus mask.

Didi can sing and she is pretty, but what I HATE about her is her really ugly facial expressions she uses as she is singing. And then her braying and begging to the judges was an embarassment. She looks like a BAD actress, pretending to be a good singer.
When she is calm (which is almost NEVER) she looks pretty......but look at her when she sings.......really ugly expressions for such a pretty lady.
But no one here deserves to win.
Adam Lambert hit the bar, and there is no way to go but down!
I say "Go Big Mike".......but then when Reuben Studdard won no one paid attention to him after that.
There is no one better than Adam Lambert, and I have watched every single show of AI. Now that Adam has been there, and Simon is leaving, why watch?
Of all nine seasons, this is by far the WORST as far as talent goes.

  • Kristi says:

I love Lee. His performance last week was lacking, but the two weeks prior to that are already on my ipod and the most played songs, of late. Great voice!

  • Ann Martin says:

I have been a huge Idol fan ever since it began. It is the only show I religiously watch on television. This year I think Crystal can steal the show. She's original, her own person, and she gives me goose bumps when she sings. I just LOVE her. There are some other talents this year, but Crystal is my favorite hands down! Go girl!

  • JC Allen says:

Crystal B. is a one trick pony. She does the same boring think every week. My sister can do Me and Bobbie Mcgee better than that. Anyway, the best of the night was a tie between Big Mike and Didi B. from where I stood with Rocker boy in third.. I guarantee you this. The judges are pimping Crystal so much the public will turn on her in the end I guarantee it and thank god because if she one it would be just like Taylor Hicks winning all over again. What a shame that Idol has gone so far down hill this year. This is a singing competition right and if that's the case then this is a horrible top 12.

I never watch the show until I've heard the audio tracks. Amazing how that changes things, like quickly eliminating any interest in Casey who is at best an average singer with some problems staying on key through an entire song.

  • donna says:

crystal is the true american idol.and this years winner.

  • Doreen says:

Casey is the best...do a little Bob Carlise but change it up just a bit. He's got the voice for it. Keep going Casey...I vote for your every week. Move around the stage a bit more too!

  • winner says:

Casey James is the ONE. He is a cool performer and a hot guitarist. He is solid. Of course the contest is for singing but if Casey ever let loose with that guitar and show his total talent - a hands down winner.

  • Rod G. says:

Interesting !!! I felt like i could've been reading my own ratings there. Obviously, you and I think alot alike. For the post that criticized Didi, i believe they've allowed themself to be influenced too much by the judges. For whatever reason, possibly because Didi admits too much to nerves, which i'd hope she would stop doing, but the judges have made her their whipping post this season. And i just don't get it either. I certainly agree with your top 4, and flaky (Crystal) and spacey (Siobhan) probably lead the pack right now.
On a side note, saw Adam Lambert's video and if that guy doesn't end up with a sex change operation somewhere along the line, i'll be real surprized. I had to do a double take when i saw the video to realize who i was looking at, as i thought at first i was watching some unknown female. Boy George has nothing on this guy.

  • SueSue says:

This is the worst Idol season ever. Who picked these top 12. I don't see them having a good Top 10 show on the road. Who wants to go pay to see most of them....I wouldn't. The judges pick the young 17-18 year olds who are not mature or have good voices yet. My pick for the Top 2 are Crystal and Casey. I have voted for them each week.

  • Anna says:

I don't know why the judges keep berating Didi! She's awesome, definitely deserved #2 maybe even #1.
As for the others, Casey James is by far the best guy, Aaron Kelly comes in a close second. The rest just don't really cut it for me, especially Tim Urban. Seriously, what is he doing here??? Crystal has a good voice, but she is rather boring, and I would like to see her do something without the guitar so I can see what she can really do!! Sioban is just amazing!! She, Did, Casey, and Aaron for the top four!

  • Chad says:

Casey should win it...he has the "it" factor. Crystal has no personality and doesn't seem very likeable.

  • Herbert says:

Didi Benami has it all, looks exotic sexy voice. She will sneack up to at least the top 3.
    Shobian will be there too.

  • Brady says:

My fave this season is by far Crystal Bowersox. I liked her from even before the top 24 began because of her amazing singer/songwriter Hollywood song choices. IMO, I think in any order Katie Stevens, Tim Urban, and Andrew Garcia need to be the next three to go hands down. After that, I think it is a five way fight between Lee, Casey, Michael, Didi, and Aaron to try to crack into a Crystal and Siobhan finale. I think if Lee and Casey break out with a "moment" worthy performance, than the top four will include them with Crystal and Siobhan, and Didi as a possiblity.

  • Marla says:

Well, I don't like Crystal Bowersock much or I should say her style. It's kind of old. Like a rebirth of the hippy era. I just don't get her. I don't feel it. Now, I like Didi because she's unique. She really sang that song and I remember Linda Ronstadt's version and I was glad she did the song her way. She made it modern and unique. But my favorites are Siobhan and Casey. I actually like Aaron too. I like a lot of the contestants. The pitch problems they're talking about is just the way her voice sounds I think Because it wasn't pitchy to me. But her voice and the way she sings and enunciates is different.

  • Marla says:

And I'd like to thank Kris Kristofferson also for looking very beautiful in "A Star Is Born." He was gorgeous. That's another thing to thank him for. I appreciate beauty. It is a good song. He wrote many. But, I don't like Crystal Bowersock because she's stuff in the hippy era. It's over. Go modern. I agree with Ellen. Crystal looks pale and if she's still sick. I'm sorry for her but she does lack personality. I hate her hair, the stud below her lip, and her teeth, and her voice is only OK. I think Simon is not saying anything bad to her since she got sick because he would feel too bad if she died or something because she's nothing special.

  • Barbara says:

I too am really tired of the show this year. It's so dull. The Judges are a joke this year, the Lady Judges are trying so haard to impress the public and they are making a Mess of things. Ellen is scaraed to death and Doe Eyed Kara is a total Joke trying to be a "know it all" knows little, says a lot but says little, like I didn't like you song choice. Aren't they suppose to be judging their VOICE not the song?,
    Gee Whiz, What a Mess!!

  • karen says:

I think that the one who has the most talent is Crystal Bowesox. She is original and fresh. But i do agree with what you said about adam lambert. He was one of the most original and talented contestant on the show. the only one who beats him is kelly clarkson. Last year had so much better talent. I just hope Tim Urban goes home and crystal wins.

  • Tom says:

There are only three contestants worth 9 minutes of the lousy season nine! Siobhan, Chrystal, and Didi.
Didi is very good when she has the right song: Terrified and Riohhan were memorable. Kool 2010 sound for "Terrified" and a very nice rendition with Riohan without too much cutsy flirtatious garbage she has been throwing at the camera lately.
She has the star power, looks, personality, and an unique voice. It is obvious she is Kara's pet.
Chrytstal: Her rendition of "Long as I can see the Light" and Give Me One Reason, were POWERFUL performances that were in her comfort range.
She is a gifted talent. Thank God they clued her into whitening her teeth someowhat.... Seem's to be so earthy, that she thinks the AI is too commercial for her.
Her rendition of Bobby McGee was a predictiable selection since she is so often compared to the late JJ (Janis Joplin). She has a chance to take it all... Hint..listen to Leanne Rhymes version
Siobhan (whoever thought this name up...well...) Has been coached perfectly...started out steadily...blew people away with he "NOTE" in Think....and then over did the sound in her last song....
Vibrant and one to watch...definately has the Star Smashing vocals, impish personality, and uniqueness to take it all.
The judges...sigh...I still don't have a clue what the star down was between host and judge...moronic....if Kara hangs any closer to Simon they will have to perform a Siamese twin operation for separation...much like she is going to need from her husband.. Gifted song writer but Christ...must be one hell of a menopausal stage...with her, Simon, and Barechest boy....
Ellen...doesn't have a musice clue..but her ligthness that she has brought to the show has been refresshing...If I have to hear
"DOG" one more time from Randy...I am going to beat him with a bone!
    Well that's my two cents.

I think the guy above just about summed up my thoughts...needs to work on his spelling! :9)

  • eddie says:

Anna, on your comment "Sioban is just amazing!! She, Did, Casey, and Aaron for the top four!" I hope her boyfreind isn't the jealous type. YOu might want to correct your spelling.

  • DAN says:

i Agree crystal is good but she is to predictable with each song choose, sioban is ok she is like adam lamberg she is only good with high notes like adam, now last season people say adam should have won but he was only good with high notes where chris is good all around, id say in this order worst to best overall in all there performances
    9)Tim,he just sux completely
8)Andrew,hes pretty bad but my do better in the future
7)Katie,her voice is good but she chooses hard songs
6)Aaron,he has a good voice but his songs sound the same and somewhat dull
5)Didi,good voice just a little funky for my taste
4)Micheal,getting better just work a little more
3)Siobhan,Good but her high vocals dominant the rest of her singing
2)tie between crystal and Casey,Crystal is good but she is to predictable in songs and she is getting a little worse because of stage fright, Casey is great he has great potential and voice, a good blues singer very much
1)Lee Dywaze, now most may disagree Lee has something special, he has a great voice and is getting better, i just see confedence in him

  • dan says:

My FAVORITE OUT OF THE TOP 24 WAS THE LAMBERT MULLET KID HE HAD A NICE SUBLIMEY VOICE

  • AB says:

I am an older person who REALLY loves the show and I buy music ALL kinds sooooo that said I LIKE AND WILL BUY THEIR MUSIC. CRYSTAL, LEE, and CASEY. NUFF SAID.
