The Bonnie Hunt Show Finally Canceled, A Nation Mourns

BonnieHuntShow225.jpg

Order up a deep dish pizza and draw yourself a bath. You'll need some comfort after this news: PerezHilton is reporting that after two long seasons, The Bonnie Hunt Show has been canceled. The Chicago comedienne's afternoon talk show premiered in 2008 with Robin Williams as her first guest. Since then, Bonnie Hunt was nominated for three Daytime Emmys including Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling.

The show, which tapes in Culver City, will finish out its second season before shutting down production, according to PerezHilton's sources. The Bonnie Hunt Show features a two-story, Dean Martin-tribute set featuring photos of her dog and a fireman's pole. According to Wikipedia, Bonnie has never used the fireman's pole -- hopefully viewers can look forward to that inaugural ride during her teary finale.

For those unfamiliar with the format of the Bonnie Hunt show, each episode starts with a monologue and features segments in which the Jerry Maguire co-star answers viewer mail ("Mail From You Guys"), improvises with the audience and her producer Don Lake ("Dr. Know It All"), and asks children about topics that predate them ("Young People Don't Know Nothin"). Bonnie frequently welcomes her mother, Alice, on the show via video chat and is particularly interested in hearing about her guest's mothers, especially if they are nurses.

Let's take a moment on this gloomy, Monday afternoon to toast Bonnie and her mom with this famous "Ask Alice" segment. All of the excitement of talking your mom through a video chat, except it's someone else's mom, and it's on daytime TV! (And Emmy voters, please consider her impeccable hairstyling!)

I just heard Warner Borthers is cancelling the Bonnie Hunt show after May 2010. What are they all crazy up there in their studio offices?!! This is one the most funny, honest, refreshing, and enjoyable daytime talk shows on the air. We DVR this every day and we look so forward to watching these at the end of a stressful day at work. Please, please reconsider. I am forwarding to all my friends and family - I am sure they will be shocked and disappointed too with Warner Bros decision. Again, please reconsider?! Loved the show. Once again nbc doesn't know what they are doing... Maybe if the advertised people would have heard of her show. None of my friends did till I told them.

I just found out that they were cancelling the Bonnie Hunt show. I went on line to find her web site so I could tell her how much I enjoy her show. What's the matter - not smutty enough for you TV execs? This is a great show and emphasized family values. It's nice to watch a show that you could watch with your Mother and not be embarrassed. I think this is a big mistake.

Yeah! That would have been a good one! Why not? They've (all talk shows) have done every other make over why Not "Cholas"/

  • Deborah DeBellis says:

I am truly so sad that the Bonnie Hunt Show is going off the air. She is delightful, wholesome, funny without being disgusting. I love all the segments she has including animal rescue visits, funny captions, ask Alice, kid magicians. Her show is adorable. I have never wrote in about my opinion on anything before because I'm too busy. But that is how strongly I feel about this big mistake. I'm so sick of the networks jamming trash tv down our throats and when a good wholesome show comes on it gets cancelled. It's rather scary, we're being forced into the "Dumbing Down of America". Is there some place I can sign a petition to keep her on the air?

  • Jane K says:

Bonnie brought comfort to those of us who do not want to be pencil thin, or use botox or have a face life. We are normal and ok after all!
Time for a shake-up at our major networks as I for one turn off my t.v. 98% of the day.
Screaming co-defendents, wise-cracking judges, Dr. Oz scaring the crap out of women each day. Where is the intelligent, relaxing, fun-loving TV?
Oh, that's right, it was Bonnie! Huh...

  • tenna thompson says:

Unbelievable...I find this show refreshing and clean and fun to watch. What a mistake...

  • Patsy & Jerry Baar says:

My husband, Jerry and I watch the Bonnie Hunt Show every day. We love it. She is so sincere and quick witted. We especially like her feel good moment of the day and also enjoy her mother who is a real hoot. Bonnie is so kind and loving to her guests. We love and will miss Bonnie. We hope you can find a way to keep her on.

  • Sandy Payton says:

PLEASE LEAVE HER SHOW ON !!!!!!! I love it,it makes me laugh and some days you need a little laugh in the middle of the day. There has to be something everybody can do to persuade Warner Brother's to keep it going.
There is no way that the show does not have enough veiwers to keep it in the air.Not everybody likes the stupid soap operas.

  • Jeanne Kramer says:

My whole family watches The Bonnie Hunt show. I tape it during the day and we all watch at night. It is a funny, wholesome show. She is very witty and smart. I love the camaraderie between Bonnie and all of her crew. This is a terrific show and you should leave it on!!

  • Please bring back the Bonnie Hunt Show. I agree with all the comments so far. We love the show. it is a bright spot in the day. Who wants another dose of the usual trash on TV these days. I watch very little daytime TV but this was always on my list of must see. Charlotte Bullard, Greeneville TN

I just found that the wonderful Bonnie Hunt Show has been cancelled.Ifeel so bad . I loved her show.Besides being the funniest person on tv her compassion for people and animals is unbelievable. If at all possible bring Bonnie back

  • C. Palmer says:

I am just sick to my stomach . . . every time I hear that Bonnie will be leaving in May! What is happening here? Who made the decision to cancel the show? They must be OUT OF THEIR MINDS!!!!
Your show has brought so much joy to me and now my 76 yr. old mother with Alzheimer's who is living with me. I don't care what we are doing, we ALWAYS stop to watch this WONDERFUL show!!! We both LOVE her so much and have been fans for years!!!
I cannot believe all the crap that is on television today, and now for the two years, we FINALLY got a chance to watch a show like Bonnie's, with such heart and absolute quality...and instead they cancel her!? Unbelievable, completely unbelievable!
Bonnie has brought love and laughter into our homes and with her huge heart for animals, NO ONE else on television today has done MORE for them than Bonnie! What is wrong with the sponsors, the networks and whomever else has decided the show must go! I want to know who they are so I can BOYCOTT them for life!
Bonnie, YOU CAN'T leave!!!!!!! What are we going to do without you????

  • M.J. Miller says:

You are making a big mistake taking off the Bonnie Hunt Show.
She is refreshing, and intertaining. Take the "VIEW" off
and replace her show with it. Bonnie has a great crew working
    with her too.
Pass this on to Bonnie... She's a great gal.... And adds
alot of fun and laughter to the television. Has a big heart
and love for animals. Gives a person a good outlook to life.
And her Mom Alice is a joy to watch too !!!
I'm sad you are making this mistake. Not much to watch in the
    a.m. let alone evening television.
I agree with all the above that have written in too!!!!!
    Melinda

  • Tina S. says:

I can not believe they are canceling Bonnie's show. Her show is funny, clean, family friendly and well nice. What is wrong with having a 'nice' show on TV. I'm glad Oprah is quitting her show is starting to become like so many, pandering to the quick ratings junk. Granted Oprah has covered just about everything there is to cover, but her show is becoming old. Perhaps moving Bonnie's show to Oprah's time slot? Something, anything other than canceling it. KEEP GOOD TV ON TV. What would you replace it with, another Dr. Phil. One self absorbed blow hard is enough per decade. Your canceling soaps, so the person who said leave it to the day time hunks needs to realize they are being cancelled too. LEAVE BONNIE ON THE AIR. NBC dumped Medium and that was a mistake, another station should pick up Bonnie and stick it to PerezHilton and CBS.

  • J. Shortencarier says:

Everyone you've heard from is correct. What does is take to keep quality programming on the air? Oprah has become a trite tv tabloid and The View is maddening because they talk over each other and argue and sometimes get smutty to point that it's embarrassing. It's all such done-already drivel. Bonnie is fresh and FUNNY and quick-witted and SHARP and she doesn't have to be dirty to be entertaining. And with Don, and the band, and the rest of her wonderful staff, and the skits and animals, there is so much more depth to her show than any of the others. She's more than tough enough to take over the spots of either Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien and we'd all be better off for it. She's a lot funnier than Letterman for that matter.

  • kathleen codyrachel says:

How can they do this once again execs are taking a break from using their brains, perhaps they have borrowed NBC's small & idiotic brains!!!
Bonnie Hunt has on one of the best talk shows. She is natural and sweet. She gives her lucky audience the feeling of being in her home. We've been lucky to meet her staff (terrific people also) and to enjoy an incredibly delightful & down to earth talent.
Thank you so much Bonnie - I am sure your next endeavor will put those fools to shame!

  • Patricia Stein says:

Love the show & cast. If it gets cancelled I think I will just
turn the tv off & read a book. Most of what is on tv isn't worth my time - this show was an exception. Too much junk and not enough quality shows on tv that the whole family can watch! Network Ex's are making a big mistake!!

  • Beth Ford says:

Bonnie Hunt is the best show on! I look forward to it everyday. It always makes me laugh. It couldnt be any more down to earth. She is the best host ive ever watched. Its a big mistake to take it off the air. What fool came up with that bright idea? Idiots!! I love Bonnie!

  • Cathy Deitz says:

Bonnie Hunt's show is the bright spot in what has become the wasteland of daytime TV. Cancelling it is simply wrong. I'll wager that whatever replaces it will not make viewers laugh out loud - every single day!!!!!

  • simone melo says:

Why does this move not surprise me? These studio heads have no idea what talent is. What will you replace Bonnie with- another Jerry Springer knock off? Or how about 5 women that no one really likes, and have them chat- a direct rip off of the View? Genius, you guys are. Bonnie is by far the classiest lady on tv. She does things the old school way. She turned down Levi Johnston to be on her show because she has CLASS!!!
I agree with the others- take your heads out of your asses- wake up.

  • Mom2Niltac says:

My husband has watched everything Bonnie Hunt has done and we have watched her talk show from the start. It's shown on my NBC station which, since it cut its news staff to about 3 1/2, shows paid programming several hours every week day. Bonnie was the lead in to Ellen, then our local news. Competition is "General Hospital", Tyra, Judge Joe and that awful new "Let's Make a Deal."
As many posters above said, we set the dvr to record Bonnie and watched it in the evening. About my only complaints is that Bonnie would sometimes just totally go "off topic" and start a story, etc. and not finish, plus I did get a little overwhelmed by her large staff who seemed to on screen too much. Should have figured something out when the band disappeared!
It's ironic, my husband finally had vacation on a time they were taping and we will finally be going to see the show this month! I will wave at you all!

  • Geraldine says:

I looked forward to watching Bonnie Hunt today and especially when Jackie Collins was on. Unfortunately the sound did not come on and missed her talk with the audience...was that intentional by the network?...tried to find this episode online, no such luck! I love listening to Bonnie's monologue and her quick wit along with her sensitivity toward her guests and her audience. Somewhat of a cliche but her warm-hearted mannerisms are very catchy and it's nice to start the day off with her feel good moment of the day...the network should reconsider canceling or else perhaps some other network should strongly consider purchasing it so that the worlds perception of us does not go down the toilet. She reminds us that there are intelligent, respected, funny people in America who say what they mean and mean what they say without blurting out an explicative or shock and awe comments to attain ratings for the sake of ratings...shocker! She actually entertains without opposing networks smashing and bashing her like Letterman, Leno, Conan, or the other dork to whom I can't stand ...you know what's his name?...to tell you the truth can't stand either Letterman or Conan! Love Bonnie!...you created a show that can reach every marketing audience in the World...you know that third round satellite that goes around a yellow sun in the Milky Way Galaxy...quite frankly if aliens are watching they aren't offended because the only people she offends are shallow, ill-witted, non-humorous, foul mouthed Americans. Keep The Bonnie Hunt Show on...do it for what's good in America and the ratings will come...hire better marketing promoters...have her mother on more often...and have actresses/comedians like Betty White and Jackie Collins stay longer...you never know we might hear something that just might make us feel better.
