Kris Allen's Single is Dying Like It's Dying

allenlambert.jpg

Sad news for fans of puppy-looking dudes everywhere: American Idol's last winner Kris Allen, Randy Jackson's onetime cherished "tender dog," is having a rough go on iTunes this week with his new single "Live Like We're Dying." The rollicking, campfire-friendly, Gavin Degraw-conjuring song drops to #58 on the singles chart this week, ranking somewhere down there with that godforsaken "You're a Jerk" number and probably the 12-years-strong "My Heart Will Go On." Now, a stillborn Idol single wouldn't necessary be news unless there was also a strange Idol triumph to counteract it, right? Strap on your puffy album-cover dress-thing, because one Idol contestant may be pulling ahead far after the polls have closed.

According to Amazon, the as-yet-untitled Adam Lambert album, which doesn't drop until November 24, is at #2 on the Amazon Bestsellers List. Phenomenally, the Idol runner-up's label RCA and Amazon had yet to even release a statement about pre-order availability. Currently he's ranked only behind Barbra Streisand and in front of Susan Boyle, which means he has proven himself a beacon of glitter-slathered hope for 57-to-62-year-olds everywhere. Somewhere in a luxurious grotto filled with gyrating holograms of Leona Lewis, Simon Cowell snickers and cries, knowing his childhood dream of breeding a pop star from the well-costumed genes of Butch Patrick and Jo Anne Worley is complete.

It's Ruben/Clay all over again. In more than one way!

  • anonymous says:

you have only to read the twitter/on-line activity and have attended the AI Concert filled with tweens-octagenarians wearing Adam t-shirts to know that his target age group far exceeds "57 to 62 year olds". But I guess it's easier not to do the research and just repeat stupid comments by other so-called writers. Oh, and, BTW, I'm a fan and am in my 30's.

  • Zack says:

You do realize that amazon chart is a daily/weekly chart and not a cumulative chart, right ?. As for iTunes the song needs to grow on the radio first it needs airplay to climb the chart. The song was not repressed for weeks but rather released right away without much airplay.
It will climb. Amazon preorders or "bestsellers list" means very little.

  • Annaeika says:

I truly believe it's a terrible thing to have a starter debut single with the word 'DYING' in the title. It is not a good omen at all the first time I read about it. I feel sorry for Kris, absolutely. A very grim foreboding for a career just starting. It's like Kris saying 'I Sing Like My Career Is DYING.'
While Adam has 'Time for MIRACLES' for his first single. What a very good symbolism for a great career. It's like Adam is saying 'My Time has come. It's My Time For MIRACLES!'

  • Whatever happened to reading these articles with a grain of humor?

  • Maisy says:

Just what Kris Allen needs, more pity votes, I mean, purchases. But hey, whatever wins you the title, um, again, whatever sells albums.
Thanks to your “puppy looking” comment I’m sure he’ll start climbing the charts.
FYI. We're studying your post in our freshman Comm class right now!
And we're running 2 to 1 in favor of buying Lambert because we're sick of the "Kris getting kicked under the bus" nonsense.

  • Rose says:

Um, do you have any knowledge of how the iTunes chart works? It is constantly moving. It's not a weekly chart. Now that it is starting to get played on the radio and is actually being advertised on iTunes (it wasn't until today), it is climbing the chart again. It's climbed 25 spots already.
The single is going to be a hit as more and more stations pick it up for airplay. And just like on the show, where Adam started with all the flash and all the buzz, and Kris started with just his talent and his music and no fanfare at all, Kris will steadily rise to the top.
Just to be clear, I think Adam will have a phenomenal career as well. But Kris's single is hardly dying. Try to be professional and get your facts straight.

  • chunkymunky says:

Why so bitter, Louis Virtel? When the sales numbers finally reveal the stark truth in the harsh light of day...the truth that 2009 was the year of the ARKANSAS IDOL...the backlash against Lambert from all the bitter bitter Kris fantards is going to be mighty.
Not that it matters much. Lambert couldn't aspire to Clay Aiken's glittery tiara on his best day.

  • Cassidy says:

Every week just like millions of other people I watched Idol just to see Adam Lambert. I never liked Kris because I do not think he is a very good singer and after seeing Kris in concert I know that he will never be much of an entertainer. Adam should have won American Idol because he is an extraordinary talent with worldwide fans. The travesty is that Kris' home state pulled out all ethical stops to have Kris win. Now with Adam's domination on tour and in the charts Kris is shown to be the tarnished Idol wearing the crown that belongs to a gifted artist. Karma comes to mind. By the way, I am 24 and saw the concert with my teen aged brother, my 26 year old boyfriend, my 44 year old mother and my 74 year old grandmother, my dad who was teaching a night class at collage would have gone if he could have, we all love Adam. I believe Brian May when he says draws will drop around the world when we hear Adam's new music. I can hardly wait for Adam's new album and his 2012 sound track.

Thanks, Zack, you said what I was thinking.

You probably should have checked the charts before publishing this. Live Like We're Dying is climbing. The early Friday release seemed to throw people -- plus many bought the I-Tunes Pass and are waiting for November 17th.

  • Kathy says:

Thanks for this article. Because of you I am buying a few more downloads. And I am from Seattle, not Arkansas! Go Kris!

  • Leigh says:

Why? It's not humorous - just vaguely nasty. Maybe that passes for humor in certain quarters.

  • stolidog says:

Jesus Christ, I feel like I'm back in middle school after reading these comments.

  • miranda says:

Um, if you bothered to look, Kris' song is moving back UP the charts. The last time I checked, it was at #37 overall. That's a jump of more than 20 spots from yesterday...
Your site seems determined to trash Kris Allen without giving him a chance. That's not very professional or responsible, now is it?
Weekends in general are a bad time for Itunes sales. So instead of declaring the song a flop, maybe you should WAIT until it had been released for longer than 3 days, huh???
Also, if you go on amazon.com, Kris Allen has moved WAY UP on the charts for album pre-orders. Jumping by more than 600% from last week.
Again, this is irresponsible journalism to declare something a failure when the song was just released LAST FRIDAY. Three freaking days ago...

  • kerrie says:

This article is iresponsible. You don't have your facts straight and don't know what you're talking about, sorry.

  • Amanda says:

"It's Ruben/Clay all over again. In more than one way!"
I disagree! And besides, Clay Aiken is classy , Adam Lambert, on the other hand, is an attention whore!

  • ZACK says:

Really ? I felt that way reading the actual article. Clearly journalism is not for everyone. haven't you gone to school Louis ? Didn't they teach you in journalism classes that you should thoroughly research a subject before writing an article about it ? This article shows a lack of basic fundamental understanding of how charts work.

  • Stardust says:

Well, I highly doubt the 89,000 students and their teachers who will be helped by the over $230,000.00 dollars that Adam Lambert raised for DonorsChoose charity would call him an "attention whore."
Nor, do I think the people who are helped by the over $30,000.00 donated in Adam Lambert's honor to the MusiCares charity will call him that, either.
The over a quarter of a million dollars - yes - $260,000 raised for these two charities in honor of Adam Lambert speaks for itself.
Especially since these two charities began accepting donations in his honor during the past eight weeks!

  • elizabeth says:

Well this is your job right? always picking something for contoversy.
#1 - Kris Allen shows has not been marketed in the airway. People like you judge right away assuming it is not going to sell. How can an item sell when it is not actually out there?
#2 - You can be an Adam Lambert fan, but who cares. I am a Kris Allen fan and I did not get a chance to go to itune because I was having problem looking for it?
Your determination that the song is dying can be construed like you dont know what you are talking about.

  • kerri says:

Well Adam is #1 now @ Amazon! GO Adam- the real winner shines through as we knew he would. (not that I don't love KRis - but come on!!!!!)

  • 4mula1 says:

ADAM'S ALBUM IS AT #1 ON AMAZON NOW. Despite the fact that, as Rockstar Weekly reports, it looks like many confused fans are mistakenly pre-ordering the wrong thing.
    http://www.rockstarweekly.com/content/view/938/206/
I'm a not-American who lives in not-America and has never seen an ep of AI. I'll be buying multiple copies of Adam's album on Amazon and iTunes.
Adam Lambert sounds and looks like a global star in the making to me. I'm just ignoring all the crazy fan wars, listening to Jay-Z and Alicia's Empire State of Mind and The E.N.D. while impatiently waiting for something of Adam's to arrive.

  • Lila Chu says:

How time flies, it is now enjoying the top position of the aforementioned list. another historical record for Adam Lambert. Congratulations to the best ever produce of American Idol.

  • Kerry says:

I am an Adam Lambert fan that had to endure all of the smugness of Kris's fans after Kris' Idol win even though I knew that Adam was far more talented and popular and that something was amiss with Kris's victory. Now I know that I was right. Arkansas cheated. My mother’s best friend was born and raised in Arkansas and she has the goods, 38 million Arkansas votes plus Adam’s phone lines were blocked. It has been proven by the tour when the entire world witnessed Adam’s popularity and superior talent and now again with the album sales. Now I want to gloat. Adam Lambert is far more talented then Kris could ever be on the best day of his life. I do not dislike Kris but his delusional, mean and nasty fans are getting the failure they deserve. All of them that said, “you can not compare them because they are different type of artist” are correct, one of them is iconic and the other is below average.

  • Linda L Schneider says:

Kris's single is now at #47 on iTunes, so he's dropped again. And, a couple of hours ago, his album pre-orders, on Amazon, had not made it into the top 100 yet.
