Friday Box Office: Brüno, Uno

Brüno opened to a healthy $14.2 million Friday -- a little behind comedy-to-beat The Hangover, but well ahead of Borat's opening day. Still, Borat opened on far less screens and Brüno has the summer destruction derby to contend with, so it'll be interesting to see if Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy has smooth, freshly waxed legs. In other news, I Love You Beth Cooper rewarded Fox's meager investment with an equally half-hearted haul.

Final Box Office Numbers Reveal Narrow Transformers Triumph

Considering the outrage that virtually defeathered Michael Bay's hair during his most recent white-hot screed to Paramount, this afternoon's final weekend box-office tally brings a desperately needed peace to the studio and the Transformers family at large. But just how close a call was it?

Tie Game!

Congratulations to the July 4th box office weekend winner: a blockbuster bit of entertainment in which Megan Fox (voiced by John Leguizamo) tangles with gold-toothed, jive-talking woolly mammoths that transform into gigantic explosions. Sound a bit confusing? It is! Come inside for a box office battle for the top spot that's murkier than a hastily thrown-together Wasilla press conference.

Transformers Toughen Up for Ice Age

For a moment there, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs looked like it might upstage Skids and the gang with a bold holiday coup for first place. But even with a 3-D surcharge padding its numbers since Wednesday, the animated Fox entry has dropped incrementally behind Transfromers: Revenge of the Fallen en route to yet another close Sunday finish. Public Enemies performed strongly as well, and a tip of the Uncle Sam hat to Warner Bros., whose firecracker The Hangover will explode past $200 million right around the time you put your burgers on the grill this afternoon. Congratulations to them, and Happy Independence Day to you!

We Know the Feeling, Megan: Fallen Cracks $200 Million

As sure as Flower Kid's affection for Megan Fox, America this weekend declared its unwavering love for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Its opening crushed every competitor in sight, bowing only to The Dark Knight among the biggest five-day grosses ever. But a few other films managed to draw what scant viewers remained; join me now in commemorating their achievement.

Friday Box Office: Fallen Heroes

Time for Skids to invest in a second gold tooth! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen continues its relentless, incoherent assault at the box office, racking up $36.7 million yesterday and a monstrous $125.9 million since its midweek opening. In counterprogramming news, My Sister's Keeper actually managed to open OK, while Away We Go barely cracked the Top 10 in its expansion.

Friday Box Office: Reintroducing Sandra Bullock

In a year when box office analysts have cast doubt on star power (and comrades like Julia Roberts have gone down in flames), one wouldn't necessarily expect Sandra Bullock to bust out her biggest opening ever, but with The Proposal, she did. In fact, she practically beat her prior weekend record ($17.6 million for Premonition, a film we all forgot existed) on Friday alone. Meanwhile, Year One came in at the high end of expectations; with an $8.5 million Friday, at least it's assured of opening better than Land of the Lost, our current flop comedy watermark.

THE PROPOSAL: $12,400,000 (new)

YEAR ONE: $8,500,000 (new)

THE HANGOVER: $8,465,000 ($134,529,000)

Friday Box Office: Still Hungover

Maybe some guys can handle Vegas after all. The Hangover extended its stay Friday at the box office's penthouse suite, easily knocking out The Taking of Pelham 123 on a mediocre opening day. As expected, Up remains strong -- much to the detriment of Eddie Murphy's new Imagine That, which barely trumped last year's Meet Dave (by $100,000) as the worst opening day of the star's career. Might be time to bust the old Detroit Lions jacket out of wardrobe, call Brett Ratner and get Axel Foley back on the streets; this slide is getting excruciating to watch.

THE HANGOVER: $10,435,000 ($82,409,000)

UP: $8,850,000 ($165,514,000)

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123: $8,250,000 (new)

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN: $2,975,000 ($136,822,000)

After some minor backsliding from first place on Friday, The Hangover was believed to have trailed Up by the narrowest of margins at the top of the weekend box office. Warner Bros. took another look at its $40-million-plus stack of cash overnight, however, concluding that it had indeed eclipsed Pixar when the final figures came in. Shocker!

Friday Box Office: Up, Up and Away

Clinging to its vast bunch of helium-filled box-office balloons, Pixar Up soared well over the competition on its opening day. Estimates for Friday signal a $21.4 million bow, which should translate to a healthy $67 million weekend. Not so good news for Drag Me to Hell, which couldn't convert rave reviews and orgasmic posters to cash; the Sam Raimi thriller posted a disappointing $6.4 million and may not break $20 million for three days. It has Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian to thank for much of that, with the Ben Stiller hit showing off its strong franchise legs in week two. And for yet another week, Obsessed refuses to die. It's kind of adorable, really.

UP: $21,400,000 (new)

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN: $7,550,000 ($87,346,000)
