Cafe au L.A.

Searching for the heart of young hollywood, it's easy to get lost. though there's no geographical center to this oh-so-pretty community, there is always one trendy pastime which is captivating the "in" crowd. thing is, they either won't admit to being a part of it, or won't agree that it's happening at all. these days, the coffeehouse scene is what's flourishing--ancient storefronts house joints with too cool names, filled with plush, vaguely antique furniture on whose broken springs languish girls in crushed velvet hats nibbling carrot cake, and boys scribbling in leather-bound diaries or, better yet, tapping into portable word processors...

Who's Who in Young Hollywood

What's "young" in Hollywood? That's the question. For actors, it's way under 30. For writers, directors, agents, and producers, 30 is very young, but we cap it there anyway. But the real question is this: Is there anyone in this town over 18 who doesn't lie about their age? Here are lots of Hollywood comers who claim to be 30 or under.

Young Gums

When I started writing this story, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Laura Dern, River Phoenix, Emily Lloyd, and Christian Slater were all young movie stars who seemed to have a reasonable chance of being around for a while. By the time I finished writing this story, at least one of them seemed to have hit the skits, and by the time you finish reading it, several of them may have been superseded by a new generation of Kiefers and Phoenixes. It depends on how fast you read.

Todd Haynes: The Intellectual From Encino

I've just caught up with a remarkable film. It's called Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, and it was made three years ago by Todd Haynes, a Brown University-educated writer-director who is now 30. Regrettably, you won't find this film in the video stores or catch it on cable. That's because Haynes received a cease-and-desist order from some big-shot lawyers who also wanted him to destroy every print of the film. Even if Haynes had agreed to that (he didn't), it wouldn't have mattered, because bootlegged video copies of _Superstar _are available, although if you're lucky enough to get hold of one, it'll probably be a grainy, ninth generation copy.

Robert Downey Jr.: Rockin' Robert

Robert Downey, Jr. cares these days about what he puts into his mouth. And also what comes out of it. Well, to a point, anyway. Having already told me he's curbed his caffeine intake and banished nicotine, the 25-year-old explains he is "really trying not to eat dairy" as he peruses the menu of a studiously downscale West Hollywood "conversation" hangout and sways in rhythm to vintage Nina Simone. Downey, to whom critics have sent mash notes for irrepressible performances in movies that would have sunk most careers (Less Than Zero, The Pick-Up Artist, True Believer, Chances Are), has effortlessly charmed our waiter into admitting us to a closed-off upstairs section of the place. And now, casually tucking his best-pressed T-shirt into a pair of black trousers with stained-glass piping, he looks up pleadingly at our server through caterpillar eyelashes, and persuades him to bring off-menu items. Dairy items, with extra mustard.

Anthony Hopkins: Animal Instincts

After a series of rather indifferent or underrealized films, such as 84 Charing Cross Road, and dubious TV projects, the nadir of which was "Hollywood Wives," actor Anthony Hopkins has finally sunk his teeth into perhaps his juiciest film role, as the charismatic psychopath Dr. Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, in Jonathan Demme's chilling The Silence of the Lambs.
