Some grumbling both on- and offline ensued Tuesday after the new-look Hollywood Reporter released its "Next Gen 2010" issue, the cover of which featured one-seventh of its upwardly mobile "35 Under 35" industry talent pool. Well-deserving hot shots, no doubt, but why so... white? And why all dudes?
During the sixth season of Weeds, which ended with a shocking twist on Monday, the Botwins assumed aliases, toured America in an RV filled with sex toys and realized that Silas's biological father (spoiler!) was still alive. But there were much stranger events that transpired during the latest iteration of the Showtime series. (Yes, even stranger than the time Andy impersonated his dead brother to access a bank account.) Let's review!
Having completed my two-day crash course in the Harry Potter franchise (with a decidedly much better second day than the first) it was time to let my newfound mild knowledge of the Potterverse to be put to the test: It was time to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in the theater.
Despite the fact that I do not speak French, I moved to Paris a little over two months ago to stay with my girlfriend while she earns a Master's degree in the language. I started taking classes of my own last month, and remain nowhere near mastering it myself. In the meantime, my main refuge for the English language and American culture has been the movie theater. I've since learned that even going to the movies here requires some cultural adaptation. And so, in grand Movieline tradition, I present nine lessons learned thus far about seeing movies in the City of Light.
An added bonus to the rampant success of Glee -- besides the fact that the show found a way to make Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" tolerable; thanks Darren Criss! -- is all the behind-the-scenes gossip that revolves around the Fox smash hit. Is the entire cast having sex with each other, Caligula-style? Did Naya Rivera trash Mark Salling's car when they broke up? Is Lea Michele the diva-terror everyone claims? Well, about that last one...
"[The production director] said the original plan called for eight to 10 days of filming in Bosnia, but that has been cut to three or four. He said weather was one factor, but so were politics. 'This story, "There is a paper [permit], there is no paper," is a non-starter in the West. Nobody from the West is going to work with you when one day you tell them you can film, and then the next day you tell them now you can't film. [...] That is simply a no-go." Sorry, Bosnia, all this could have been yours. [LAT]

Watching the trailer for this American remake of the nifty minimalist French thriller 13 Tzameti is a bit frustrating. It looks remarkably similar to the original film, and the fact that Géla Babluani directed both versions only adds to my suspicion that this remake is unnecessary and probably kind of dull. But then there's the cast. And the fact that watching Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent, Sam Riley and Jason Statham play Russian Roulette under Michael Shannon's supervision may actually be enough to get me to watch the same movie again.
Since they are rapidly losing male viewers (presumably to Internet porn), Playboy TV is now going after men and women with a new program slate called "TV for 2." This lineup will specifically target couples, and according the show descriptions on our sister site Deadline, it sounds like their plans aren't too far removed from mainstream reality TV. To wit: Brooklyn Kinda Love will be "a docu-reality series which follows the intricacies of four real couples' relationships." Right. Sounds like they need some help. Read my suggestions below and help brainstorm in the comments.
I'm picturing director David Gordon Green as a teenager, watching 80's B-movies while totally high and imagining how amazing it would be if the characters in said B-movies were also stoned out of their mind. At some point, as we all must, he grew out of this phase, and later directed critical darlings like George Washington and All the Real Girls. Then one night it hit him: "Those days on the couch in the 80's were the best!" Moreover, "What if all of the characters in those movies were totally high?" And thus, we got Pineapple Express and now the NSFW red band trailer to Your Highness, which pits Natalie Portman, James Franco and Danny McBride against three-headed creatures, sorcerers and potent marijuana.
· I don't watch Glee regularly (I leave that business to my braver coworker Julie Miller), but I'd tune in to see Anne Hathaway play the part that she pitches to Ryan Murphy in the following video. I knew she was a Sondheim girl. [ONTD]
Just as the near-instant awards buzz for Black Swan after its Venice and Toronto premieres begat a (slightly) more focused marketing showcase for Natalie Portman, last week's rapturously received AFI Fest premiere has yielded its own new poster. Which I really like! Except for what looks like the severed arm from 127 Hours Photoshopped at the bottom.
Sometimes reading news about Hollywood's development slate is almost as depressing as the front-page stories about the economy. Between a Ouija Board movie, McG's 300-style Christopher Columbus film and last week's news ambush about a Flip-cam movie and a Rubiks Cube movie, it's sometimes tempting to just stay inside and pray that The Walking Dead, 30 Rock and Boardwalk Empire keep up their quality. But don't despair! Movieline has found five projects in development that sound potentially interesting if not downright fantastic. Check them out after the jump, and chime in with your own ideas for movies in development that Hollywood should get into theaters sooner rather than later.
