Having worked on Christopher Nolan's Batman films and the upcoming Man of Steel for Legendary Pictures, David S. Goyer has been tapped to re-write the company's upcoming Godzilla reboot for Monsters director Gareth Edwards. Presumably that'll put your geek worry to ease about the next studio attempt to revive the kaiju franchise stateside, if only a bit. After all, can any Hollywood take on Godzilla be worse than Roland Emmerich's 1998 misfire?

The English actor would join leads Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron -- and fellow dwarf castees Toby Jones, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Graham, Ray Winstone and Ian McShane. Eddie Izzard was in talks for a dwarf role as well, but it appears he may have fallen out in favor of Frost. [Variety]
Bridesmaids is arguably the biggest success story of the year, if you consider that its box office grosses not only turned a female R-rated comedy into a blockbuster, but gave new life (and industry confidence) to the entire subgenre of lady-fronted comedy. Looking back on the first half of 2011, though, not every surprise was a Bridesmaids; some hit the jackpot without making nary a splash in the public eye. Continue along our look back from the midpoint of the year and consider these five quiet hits that you probably didn't know were hits.

The wranglers of Movieline's Bad Movies We Love (me and me alone) always dredge up dismissible teen comedies from the early 2000s, in case you haven't noticed. What's with them (me)? Wait, I know: Those movies are bad and we (I) love them. Yes! Right! On that note, say hello to Orange County, the breakout vehicle for Movieline pal and Lucky star Colin Hanks, who holds together this funny but aimless romp with the help of Jack Black, a thrilling supporting cast, and a botched Beatles haircut.

Keeping up with real news -- and not, say, what the plot of the next Vin Diesel action film will be -- can be quite a drag. Senseless deaths, natural disasters, debt ceilings -- it's enough to make a person want to crawl up into a ball and cry for three days. Which is why the story of Marine Sgt. Scott Moore seemed to strike a chord this week. After all, it's not every day when a real-life American hero gets to go on a date with Mila Kunis.

Don't think Woody Allen is pausing to celebrate the pending coronation of Midnight in Paris as his biggest box office hit ever (the summer art house sensation will top Hannah and Her Sisters sometime this week). If subscribers want the choice of both, the package costs $15.98. Begin shaking your fist at the sky... now. [The Netflix Blog]
You might remember a recent cancer comedy called Funny People, but I'm in favor of forgetting it and looking forward to the new Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt tumor laugher 50/50. It comes out Sept. 30, but for now, we may gaze into the sheared follicles on JGL's head. The grimness and tweeness should combine into an agreeable mixture I'll call (500) Days of Mysterious Skin.
