For whatever reason -- a jacked-up interest in the extraterrestrial or just the simple hope that creatures more intelligent than our pizza-bombing, Catwoman crashing, Glee 3D-loving species exist -- Hollywood churned out a slew of movies this year that feature aliens. In honor of this trend (and the fact that both Paul and Mars Needs Moms were released on Blu-Ray and DVD today), Movieline figured it was as good a time as any to determine the winners and the losers in this year's crop of cinema extraterrestrials.

No sooner did Viola Davis sing his praises today than Tyler Perry sent an influential endorsement of her new film to his mailing list. "Had to tell you this. I saw a movie called The Help that opens this Friday. I must say, I really enjoyed it! I love looking back and seeing how far we've come. And the performances in this film are stellar. Ms. Cicely Tyson was exceptionally Cicely. Viola Davis, this woman is remarkable. Octavia Spencer, she was like watching joy rise on the screen. You know I don't recommend a lot of movies, so this one has to be special, right? Well it is!" Now you know.
Bad news, nostalgists: the Dirty Dancing reboot is happening. Worse, it doesn't even matter who Lionsgate casts in the lead roles (provided they can, y'know, dance) as the brand itself will sell the movie -- which you will likely see whether you want to or not. (For reference to this phenomenon, see Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough in the lead Footloose remake roles.) Still! Rather than curl up into a ball and listen to "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" on repeat for the next week to mourn the latest attempt by Hollywood to scorch the earth of your childhood, why not embrace the reboot and help Movieline cast this sucker? Ahead, some casting suggestions for Dirty Dancing.

Will she be Grifters crazy or American Beauty crazy? Or is it all of the above? Crazy. [Deadline]
Ah, the floating, disembodied head; a staple of many movie posters -- apparently even ones without flesh-and-blood stars with heads to disembody. The lastest artwork for The Adventures of Tintin has arrived, ready to take on complaints about the uncanny valley head-on. (Mini-groan.) Does it work? It certainly helps that Snowy might be the cutest dog this side of Marley & Me. Click through for a look.

Music video veteran Hype Williams made his feature debut with 1998's Belly, a stylized noir-esque crime pic starring rappers DMX and Nas that had its problems but nevertheless presaged a decent future in film for Williams. Somehow, though, Williams never followed up his first film with additional features, with project after project falling through. Until now, as Variety reports that the director has signed on to helm Lust, a "Fatal Attraction in reverse" penned by Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct, Showgirls).

In late July, we previewed a slew of images from films that will be screening at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Among the titles that looked most promising was Friends With Kids, Jennifer Westfeldt's indie drama which stars her real-life boyfriend Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott and Westfeldt herself as a group of best friends in their 30's whose dynamic changes after two of them decide to have a baby...and then date other people. Like Megan Fox's character, who is featured in her first Friends artwork after the jump.

Now that Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a success, there is talk of an Oscar campaign for Andy Serkis. Can the man who motion captured Caesar do what Zoe Saldana couldn't do in Avatar: get the Academy to embrace a digital performance? "Motion capture definitely is like this new wave of making films that still keeps that awe-ness of filmmaking [...] And you still get an amazing performance and everything," Saldana said at the Teen Choice Awards. She hopes the Oscars are "more open to the technological aspects, the same way you would want to see more comedies and more horror movies get recognized with awards." This is gonna be the Brett Ratner Oscars, so: anything goes? [LAT/24 Frames]

The King's Speech -- the cutest Best Picture winner about compelling speech patterns since Rain Man -- is rumored to be ticketed for Broadway in Fall 2012. Yep, real actors will be stuttering live, onstage, in an epic epiglottal drama for the ages. That should be adorable -- and family friendly -- but are you worried that other Best Picture nominees from 2010 are better suited for a stage adaptation? Good! Ahead, some better options.
