Zooey Deschanel or Demi Lovato: Which Actress Sang the National Anthem Better at the World Series?

zooeyanthem250.jpg

I haven't been watching the World Series because, um, baseball is the least telegenic sport since blogging, but I've caught two actresses unleash very decent renditions of the national anthem since the series began. Two days ago, Zooey Deschanel purred her version, and yesterday, convalescing Disney queen Demi Lovato belted it out. Fantastic. Unfortunately, It is my belief that only one can win. Who did it better?

Sure, we're not dealing with the quality of Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston, or the Dixie Chicks here, but we've got formidable chanteuses on our hands. First, Ms. Lovato, whose smart blazer and wild Wynonna mane are enough to set off stadium fireworks.

All I can say is that Disney finds talent. That was a strong, assured, and kinda smoky (unless I'm just projecting my Wynonna associations onto this poor girl) rendition. She deserves power anthems in the vein of Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. The girl is not sub-Miley. She deserves stardom. Now, here is Hello Giggles empress Zooey Deschanel, poised in an expected vintage frock and chirping from beneath that kooky stack of Debra Winger hair.

Interesting to watch "twee" play out in a stadium. She went pretty silent near the end of some of her phrases, and my response to the performance is of a piece with my feelings about Deschanel in general: smart, cute, talented, but not inspired. Demi wins hands down.

Agree? Please fight me.

    Zooey...all the way!

  • Joechief says:

Demi all the way. I felt like I was falling asleep after listening to zooeys boring rendition.

  • joseph says:

Both were good but I'll have to go with Demi.

  • Sunny says:

    Zooey! Shes awesomely talented. 🙂

  • Kate says:

Demi did fine, though she clearly strained her vocal muscles reaching those top not. But I'd pick Zooey as the truer performer. Sometimes a bare-bones rendition of a song is all it needs. Vocal gymnastics can often detract from the song's message. Zooey's rendition may have been more plain, but she didn't try to outshine the words, letting them stand in all their glory. Well done.

  • Sarah says:

I actually liked Zooey's better. I actually thought she had better control, and the understated spin she put on it I actually found quite moving.

  • blizzard bound says:

I vote Zooey. I thought Demi sort of shrieked those high notes and made a weird choice on which vowel to stretch out on "ba-ah-neeeer yet wave." Plus, I love Zooey's dress, and I would have to start as low as she did to hit the high note, too.

  • Janet says:

there was sooo many of Demi's high notes that sounded soo strained and not very nice at all. The "freee" near the end sounded pretty pushed out and not at all "effortless" like Zooey sings.

  • Peter says:

The National anthem is not a pop song. It's an anthem! Zooey sang it with the respect it deserves, and did so beautifully!

  • Steve says:

Without any doubt, Zooey's was the more mature performance on all levels. Her vocals were more controlled and resonant. She clearly understood her instrument far better. Her tone and attitude toward the material was spot on and had genuine depth. Demi's rendition was strained and full of unnecessary histrionics that seemed to be screaming out "validate and acknowledge that I'm not just a a product of a corporate committee." Unfortunately that's exactly what she sounded like. Her technical performance was on par with the pretty girl in high school who sings better than everyone else but lacks any uniqueness or depth.

  • Chasmosaur says:

You're asking me to choose which young pretty brunette musical artist with major corporate funding and a Hollywood Car Wash that currently has a product to push - Zooey Deschanel, TV Show, New Girl; Demi Lovato, Album, Unbroken - performed the National Anthem better?
    Just get Adele next time.

  • Vanessa says:

Srsly? Demi looked like she was panicked and going through labor, only making it through with the support of screaming fans who love America and/or were excited the song was over so they could watch some ball. She was totally pitchy, too. And singing way too high up in her range. Bad news. Are we hatin' on Zooey because she's retro chic? She went low in volume because she started low in pitch. A smart gal who remembers that the "and the rockets red glare" part is enough to spark a burst a hemorrhoid if you start as high as Demi did. Did you see Demi's face, too? Let's not rule out the possibilities of the hemorrhoid. Zooey's voice has a sass, Zooey herself had a confidence that Demi did not. That alone makes her the champ, the Debra Winger hair is just a plus.

  • Jessie says:

Demi is more talented than Zooey.

  • Vanessa You Are An idiot. says:

No pitchy entails that she would have raspy and be off key. She wasn't off key you're just a moron hater who doesn't know what the heck you are talking about. You confuse voice projecting with pitchiness tells me that you are musically retarded. We are hating on Zooey because she was boring an uninspired. This isn't a little league game you invalid. This is the world series. This is a game on NATIONAL TELEVISION with a LIVE SINGER. Not watching it on some boring television show. And Zooey didn't have sass. Sass would mean that she would have performed it with pizzaz. Not like she was in a coma. Saying that Demi did not have confident when she went OUT there makes you sound like a retard. Please for the love of god Educate yourself.

  • JohnFreeman says:

You're kidding me right? A true performer? Zooey D? That girl pretty much put my entire living to sleep with that rendition. Sorry but this is a LIVE singer singing. Not a pre recorded audio tape. I felt like she needed to be prodded with a stick every five seconds for her to go to the next verse. There is a difference between vocal gymnastics and actually doing the WORDS “glory” whatever the hell that means.

  • JoeChief says:

Well then you are musically retarded if you pick Zooey over Demi. No one in the right mind would call Zooey a true performer. And no one who was vocally inept would call Demi's VOCAL PROJECTIONS Shrieking. Thats called raising an octave. You my friend have the mindset of an invalid.

  • Jack Frost says:

You must have been in a year long Coma then if you thought she was moving. Also I guess you missed the wavering parts she had in her vocals as well? Better control my ass. Learn a thing or two about general science and human biology.

  • Batty boy says:

See this is where your lack of musical education shows my idiotic friend. A strained voice would entail RASP and a nasal like quality. There was none of that in those high notes. You're stupid for saying that/ Also Zooey Sings the song effortlessly because she puts no effort into it. I call that bored I call that uninspiring, and I call you a moronic fucktard for thinking that a rendition with actual effort is better than the one that sounds like a monotoned boring 1950s juke box version/

  • James says:

News flash idiot. These are live singers/ Not pre recorded cd's. When I hear a live singer I expect to HEAR a different version. No one in the right mind would consider Zooey's version respectful unless you were living in a tyrinical government. Did Al Queda win and I wasn't informed?

  • Baily Joe says:

Demi for sure. Zooey can't sing and she needs some major work in actual vocal projection. I was actually NOT rooting for the rangers because of her rendition.

  • JoeBach says:

    Dude are you high?

  • JoeBach says:

Lol. Seriously dude. Stop talking. Honestly, if I were you I would just shut up right now cause you sound stupid. Here's a little pro tip for you broham. Bordem does not equal maturity. If anything this was a slap to this country's face. You know a country that expects things to be “bigger and better” this made me feel like I was watching the game in an internment camp. No her vocals were more bland. Bland does not mean controlled. Bland means boring. Nothing controlled about that. Again you are wrong and you sound like a musically inept individual. Zooey stayed in her safety zone. Thats not understanding your instrument far better. Whatever that means. That's being a coward. And frankly you get slammed for being a coward in this country. Go back to Canada Zooey.

  • JoeBach says:

“Her tone and attitude toward the material was spot on and had genuine depth.”
Yeah I'm not gonna respond to this because you just sound stupid right now. I will however respond to your next part about you claiming that Demi sounded like she was part of a corporation. Like someone else said, I will just repeat what they said. A strained voice means there would be a raspy quality to their voice. Strained would also means that someone was singing through their nose rather than their lungs. This is basic science that you apparently didn't study in middle school. That and there is a difference between SCREAMING and VOICE PROJECTING my idiotic friend. Also you're really gonna slam her for being part of a CORPORATE COMMITTEE when Zooey D has a show? On FOX? Lol. You dumb ass. You moron. This ball game was on a FOX net work you idiot. Zooey is a FOX GIRL lol. Are you high? Are you mental? Get a clue lol.

  • JoeChief says:

“Unfortunately that's exactly what she sounded like.”
Again Zooey is a girl who is SIGNED to one of FOX's shows. For you to say Zooey sounded genuine when she was pretty much shoving FOX in our mouths with that rendition makes laugh at your over all dunce like behavior. Lol. If you consider uniqueness or depth on par with something as boring, uninspired, insipid and over all bland as Zooey's coma like inducing rendition where she pretty much wiped her ass with the American flag, then you my friend are a moron. And you probably hate America.
No one in their right mind would choose someone who sounds like they are half asleep over someone who actually puts PASSION and effort into their rendition. Get out of my country Benedict Arnold.

  • Jeff Ting says:

I don't what's worse. 9/11 or Zooey's rendition of the national anthem. I'm pretty sure they are one in the same. Did Bin Laden come back to life and I wasn't informed? Cause for that brief moment, it felt like the terrorists won.
