Carrie Fisher Outed John Travolta. Good.

john-travolta-scientology-1.jpgAbout a year ago, Carrie Fisher off-handedly outed John Travolta in an interview with the Advocate and recently circled back around in the same publication to underscore what already is an open secret: John Travolta is gay. And frankly it's about damn time someone said it so blatantly.

There's been a fair amount of hand-wringing online about the outing, with most of the vitriol directed at Fisher, claiming she overstepped her bounds, invaded her friend's privacy, and betrayed his trust. The argument goes that, if Travolta truly is gay, it's up to him when to decide to come out, not Carrie Fisher.

Which is a fair argument if Travolta A.)Wasn't married to a woman and B.)Wasn't a prominent member of a notorious cult that claims that homosexuality is a perverse illness that can be cured. There are plenty of movie and television stars who are gay but simply don't talk about it; that's not what Travolta is doing. He's actively participating in a sham, a fraud that further perpetuates the idea that being gay is shameful and should be kept secret and tamped down.

Frankly, just about everyone knows John Travolta is gay. I know it. You probably know it. My grandmother knows it and she barely speaks English. It's time, John. It's not 1976, it's almost 2011. Every day that you put off admitting what the world already knows will just make it that much more absurd when you finally do come out.

And I think that's what Fisher was trying to do, trying to get John to realize that this is a different world now. Not the Hollywood where Merv Griffin couldn't be called gay even after death, but the Hollywood of Chris Colfer, where it can be all just very matter-of-fact. So hurry up, John--we're all waiting for you.

    Great Essay-
except for the last lines where you speculate on the lives of specific individuals. I found that to be awfully presumptuous for someone who is making the argument that presuming there needs to be a black or white identification of one's sexual and/or intimate inclinations is in and of itself misguided.
I gotta tell ya- I did not even read this article but was directed to your comment- That anyone in the world would want to look into the window of another's life and pass judgment is beyond me.
Isn't our own human life's journey complicated enough to keep ourselves busy? I know mine is- moreso now than ever in terms of career and more- and the sad situations in places like Sudan, Congo- and anywhere that people are being treated so poorly!

  • Tyler says:

How terrible that a person who may or may not be gay NEEDS to out him or herself because a prick writing a internet article demands it.

  • june says:

You know, you people are sicker than anyone could know.Have you NOTHING MORE to do than work on destroying a man's life for the sake of attention. John Travolta lost a child some years back and has just welcomed a new baby into he and Kelly's lives.Who are you to make such a remark about him? Carrie Fisher is PATHETIC !!! He and Kelly have been happily married for years. If you're jealous of his life..then go get your own..you all make me sick !!

  • KurtRex1453 says:

Quite frankly, as a gay guy, I could give a damn. As a gay youth, a few too many years ago, I wish like Hell some of these guys are gay would have come out then, we sure could have used the role models. If he is gay and participating in virulent ant-gay activities then out him. If not, blacklist him.

  • Jessica says:

    Agreed

  • Lynn says:

Carrie Fisher is a burnt-out druggie, and is crazy as a loon. Anyone who thinks John Travolta is gay, is a crazy as Carrie. Maybe she needs to look at herself!!!

  • Tom says:

You're all pathetic. If he's gay, it's his business. Not yours, not mine. Let him live his life in peace, for pete's sake.

  • Jim P. says:

It is relevant that we know if John is gay. That means he is living a life that is a lie and that Scientology is helping him accomplish this. The world is going through many scary changes, floods in Australia, winters in warm places, fires destroying forests, earthquakes killing thousands at once, tidal waves killing hundreds of thousands and more. Homosexuality is now becoming a norm and excepted everywhere, religious rites such as marriage is now being blackened, religion is scoffed at, adoptions with gays are accepted and lesbians and homosexuals are now becoming heroes people to be looked highly upon. As we speak there are people claiming to be Jesus. One actually has a following of 6 million, and others of lesser numbers. Armageddon is upon us, and I'm not that religious. I too, except friends who are homosexual and can't tell them to their faces that they are wrong. But, when you see everything that is happening throughout the world, one has to wonder. America is becoming a copy of Nazi Germany, and the whole world hates us for this. I didn't understand one word spoken by many of these homosexuals trying to convince those reading these posts that they are intelligent, good people. These people cannot reproduce. This alone, says it's not "normal". To Tom, "If he's gay, it's his business. Not yours, not mine." I'm sorry, but it is my business! He's showing our children that this perversion is alright and it's alright to live this way. There are millions and millions, who's religion condemns this life style, and some, even kill those that follow this belief. Believe it, or not, you really are a very tiny percentile of the worlds true belief of what is right and what is terribly wrong. I'm very tired of being afraid to express my beliefs about this. America has truly gone away from it's original concept of having a religious background. God has been taken out of all that is American, which really shouldn't have had to happen. Having that belief still would have allowed people of different religions to come here and live a life of freedom. For an athiest to be able to go to court and argue that it was wrong for God to be mentioned in school, was the first deadly act to bring America to it's knees. This country was purely designed on the belief of God, and any change, would only be the beginning of the end.

People are complex. Even the most superficially stereotypical person has complexities under the surface you can never really know or understand, if they aren't very much the same as your own.
I don't believe that people's sexuality is either / or. I recalled the other day there was a woman in my mid 20's I found attractive, and, in retrospect, I realize that it was only because I was trying so hard to make one last EFFORT to be heterosexual that I even remember the 'attraction' to her. Now, I appreciate her beauty, with absolutely no sexual attraction as a component of that appreciation. Contrast that with how absolutely INTUITIVE and EASY I find it to be sexually attracted to men. Don't even have to THINK about it. It just happens.
I do object to any person in the public eye that takes public measures to participate in activities that cast my sexual orientation in any other light than "uncommon". If you break it down, everyone's sexual orientation is unique to them (preference for readheads over blondes, voluptuous over thin, muscular over lithe, etc.). People like Tom Cruise invoke slander law when accusations of "homosexual tendencies" arise are extra offensive to me, because their actions equate homosexuality with an "insult". I'm sure he doesn't care what I think.
Mr. Travolta and Ms. Preston are entitled to decide between themselves what their relationship involves and they are entitled to privacy. Of course, one can assume by the fact that Mr. Travolta and Ms. Preston are not both of the same sex that they are both 100% heterosexual, but that's not the way things work.

B i s e x u a l ? Anyone ever heard the term? I for one don't care what way he swings, but you people that say gay, when he clearly has children can't accept "bisexual". Why is it celebrities are gay or straight, never *bisexual*. It sells papers, that's why. Glad I have adblock on so movieline is not getting a fraction of a cent from my pageviews.

  • Stacey E says:

Ok, I'll start by proclaiming that I don't Know that he's gay. I don't think he is, don't care if he is, and have never seen any evidence to support the assumption that he is. "Everyone" insists that the little sawed off one is gay, too. Not sure why "we all" know that one to be true, too.
Since you mention that it's 2011, why don't you suppose it's his business who he does or doesn't sleep with? Why does everyone need to know?
I quite honestly have more respect for people who don't inflict their predilictions on everyone else. It seems rather self centered and childish every time someone like Ricky Martin announces it to the world. Who gives a good goddamn? It isn't brave and wonderful when someone tells the world who they sleep with, it's desperation.
You aren't special if you're gay. No more special than if you're straight. Everyone needs to stop thinking of themselves as the center of the universe.

  • Mike says:

I love both John Travolta and Carrie Fisher. I am gay and have heard the rumors about Travolta, but never was sure. Maybe since John has a wife and two children, even if he is gay, he does not want the world to know. Sure Chris Colfer is fine, but who can predict how it will affect Travolta's career. Maybe Fisher was having a bad day when she announced this to the world.Everyone in LA may think he is gay, but most of the world may have no idea.

  • Esme says:

You really think people who believe (actually KNOW) that Travolta is gay are crazy? What about the famous photo where's he's mouth-kissing his male nanny? Or the infamous Enquirer piece about his gay antics in gyms and bathhouses? Don't you think he would have sued if he weren't gay? Come on John, you're not fooling anybody (except of course for ostriches like this Lynne person).

  • SOSJD is SICK says:

You are a disgusting human being. After reading your previous rants in which you liken homosexuals to an invasion of cockroaches spreading disease, I think perhaps are the one with the mental problem.

  • JB says:

    Jim, shut the hell up.

  • Brad says:

    Bravo, sir.

  • Brad says:

Well, ya heard it from Paul. Case closed. Thanks for clearing everything up, since you worked with him, Paul.

  • Truth Fairy says:

No he is clearly a gay who can't resist pussy!

  • just askin says:

If Travolta's marriage is a sham does that mean his wife is a lesbian? Does she have girlfriends on the side?

  • Gigi says:

So people who believe that Travolta is gay are liberals? Wow. That's some insult. If it has even one iota of intelligence behind it I might be offended (at your total lunacy), but how could I be? You're a douche.

  • Gigi says:

Like Carrie would ever be friends with such a total douche!

  • Gigi says:

Well if John, er, Paul says that he's straight then he must be straight!

  • Gigi says:

The Bible says that LOTS of things are sins but for some reason "Christians" like you pick & choose the ones that suit your purpose so that you can judge the people that you want to condemn. Judge not lest ye be judged Jim. God made each and every one of us in his image and He does not make mistakes. On Judgement day you can plead you case in front on Him and ask for your signs and transgressions to be forgiven but until then I suggest you go back to attempting to UNDERSTAND the Bible and not just pull out bits that you heard from your momma's best friend's sister's second cousin's husband's sister-in'law's dog said was true. God bless!

  • John T. says:

What a homo, I always knew he liked the penis, but what society tends to forget. That homos can't make babies and can't be A sexual either. So, with that being said and all people decide to "come out" when the world decides to let homo sexuality run more rampant. Society will tend to go away with the extinction of the human race. If there were nothing but homos there will be no children of the future. No, no no no and I mean no to hollywood whom thinks that test tube babies is the wave of the future. So, kudos John for FUqing up the history of man, you psycho penis pumping Scientology believing di@k sucking sag groupie donut punching Fag from the west coast! All homos should fuq king hang!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Josie says:

You are just gossip-mongering unless he actually says he is gay, himself. Until then, this is just spreading a rumor.
