Carrie Fisher Outed John Travolta. Good.
About a year ago, Carrie Fisher off-handedly outed John Travolta in an interview with the Advocate and recently circled back around in the same publication to underscore what already is an open secret: John Travolta is gay. And frankly it's about damn time someone said it so blatantly.
There's been a fair amount of hand-wringing online about the outing, with most of the vitriol directed at Fisher, claiming she overstepped her bounds, invaded her friend's privacy, and betrayed his trust. The argument goes that, if Travolta truly is gay, it's up to him when to decide to come out, not Carrie Fisher.
Which is a fair argument if Travolta A.)Wasn't married to a woman and B.)Wasn't a prominent member of a notorious cult that claims that homosexuality is a perverse illness that can be cured. There are plenty of movie and television stars who are gay but simply don't talk about it; that's not what Travolta is doing. He's actively participating in a sham, a fraud that further perpetuates the idea that being gay is shameful and should be kept secret and tamped down.
Frankly, just about everyone knows John Travolta is gay. I know it. You probably know it. My grandmother knows it and she barely speaks English. It's time, John. It's not 1976, it's almost 2011. Every day that you put off admitting what the world already knows will just make it that much more absurd when you finally do come out.
And I think that's what Fisher was trying to do, trying to get John to realize that this is a different world now. Not the Hollywood where Merv Griffin couldn't be called gay even after death, but the Hollywood of Chris Colfer, where it can be all just very matter-of-fact. So hurry up, John--we're all waiting for you.

it's like a fabled "Noreaster" in here, where the gays, the homophobes and the scientologists come together to form the perfect storm. It's shaping up to be a monster.
"So hurry up, John—we’re all waiting for you." Why should he say anything? To satisfy gossip and tabloid magazines along with millions of other people's curiosity? It is no one's business and clearly has no impact on his career or personal life so what difference would it make to you or anyone else?
Fair enough. I agree. Travolta is better actor than he is typically given credit for. Carrie Fisher needs to write about something other than Carrie Fisher (though I still maintain that her insights are strongest in the arena of exploring the consequences of a culture of Hollywood narcissism.)

I don't even use the term bisexual, myself, as it still suggests that a "sexual identity" is a valid mental construct that in some way makes sense. I should have put it in quotes.
..and yes, I was trying to be self-depricating and also just pointing out a that at least a few people in this overwrought blog thread tried to say something nuanced and have a dialogue that involved more than just shoving people into a category and mocking them.
That seems to be all anyone knows how to do anymore. And pointing out that a blog post is a dumb venue for meaningful discourse... well, you got to play it where it lays...

I have to disagree with you somewhat for criticizing Mr. Travolta and his private behavior, however. He (and his family) is / are some of the nicest people in Hollywood, and it makes no difference to me how he identifies sexually. It's none of my business and unimportant to me, since he is not openly critical of the glbt community in general.

Thank you. Also, I find the false concern in this piece for his wife Kelly Preston to be laughable and insulting. I'm sure Preston, a veteran Hollywood performer herself, knows EXACTLY what Travolta is or isn't, and she has chosen to have been right by his side for the last 15-20 yrs or so. You honestly think Carrie Fisher knows what Travolta is about, but Kelly Preston does not? Maybe they're both straight, maybe they're both gay, maybe try imagining every other scenario under the human condition, because that's all you'll ever have a chance to do seeing as you don't know, and never will know these two Hollywood celebrities.

John Travolta is not a homosexual. I worked with him. He's a normal, heterosexual male, a dedicated monogamous man committed to his loving wife and the mother of his children.

I'd say you've hit the nail on the head. I personally reject the term "gay" as applying to myself. I reject "hetero" and "homo" and "bi". I have sexual encounters with people, not with penises and vaginas (though either will certainly be involved).
I see signs that society may be moving beyond such labels and segregation...e.g. there are no longer any gay bars in my town. There are any number of establishments which are available for any person of any stripe to patronize. (But yes, you can still find a drag show.)
Kids of my daughter's generation (the ones who keep getting criticized for using "gay" they way the last generation used "lame"--oddly enough, they don't seem to be using "gay" in that sense when referring to "gay" people...very complicated this linguistic stuff)...kids of my daughter's generation seem to be largely comfortable with their varying sexualities, interests, desires, loves, etc. I'm sure there are places (Arkansas?) where vilification of anything other than fundamentalist, missionary, woman-on-bottom, for-procreation-only sex still occurs, but more and more people are feeling less and less threatened by fairies. 😉
So I have optimism.
