Hot Tub Time Machine's John Cusack Hates The Movies You Loved in The '80s

hottub_full.jpg

Hot Tub Time Machine: A well-respected cultural touchstone? Maybe! In the last week alone the ridiculous time-travel comedy has gotten a rave review from Jeffrey Wells (in typical Wells fashion, he said that anyone who doesn't find Machine funny is "dead inside") and been mentioned on 30 Rock (though Liz Lemon didn't seem like a fan). And now it even makes an appearance in the Old Grey Lady herself, The New York Times. In today's Arts & Leisure section the film's four stars--John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke--discuss all things 80s during a roundtable discussion. The questions cover everything you'd expect--Michael Jackson, The A-Team--and the answers range from fairly straight (Robinson) to funny (Corddry) to "trying to hard to be funny" (Duke). And then there's John Cusack...

Q. In the 1980s what did you think you'd be doing with your life in the year 2010?

JOHN CUSACK I remember very clearly being at the 1985 Super Bowl half-time show, on mushrooms. I hoped that I would be out of the '80s in 2010. They frightened me, and I remain in fear. It might have been the psilocybin.

What the what? Lloyd Dobler was on psychedelic drugs? But he was such a nice boy! Well, maybe not that nice:

Q. If you had to choose between the films of John Hughes or the films of Savage Steve Holland, which would you go with?

CUSACK I was only in one of the John Hughes films, and I never saw the other ones. I didn't understand them. I kept hearing a really hip 40-year-old person talking in teenagers' mouths. And I was in two movies with Steve Holland. So I don't think I would choose. I don't think I would have an opinion.

Normally when movie stars deny seeing the projects of other colleagues, it's because they don't want to be caught saying something derogatory (if you can't say something nice...). Not Cusack though, who seems fine with giving a backhanded complement to a beloved (and, hello, deceased!) icon. Somewhere, Molly Ringwald is organizing an angry mob.

what is exactly in that little white thing u carry around? What is that ??

John Cu-"sack" claims to not have "seen" the films of the wonderful and talented John Hughes, but I know for a FACT, he auditioned for ALL of them when he was a struggling actor in the '80's!!! I guess it's okay to dump on the movies you didn't get hired for, Johnny-Boy. Read, "You Couldn't Ignore Me If You Tried" - the writer details/reports about how desperate Cu-"sack" was to play the Bender role that went to Judd Nelson.

I thought that JC hated "Say Anything"--he thought he was filming a serious movie or something.
    Maybe it was the psilocybin.
Although as I remember, in the movie his grandmother dropped acid, flipped out, and hijacked a school bus full of penguins. So maybe it all makes sense.

  • Jon Bryant says:

I learned the hard way that JC doesn't like his old movies. Being a huge fan of his, I was retweeting something he posted and asked (or threw in) something about the "cute and fuzzy bunny gang" from One Crazy Summer...

He said something about how my yearbook photos must have looked really interesting, and then blocked me. 🙁
While I think his comment to me was funny (still a fan), I had no idea he didn't really like his movies from the 80's. Sucks, cuz I was even interested in what he was tweeting.

  • SunnydaZe says:

If I had played Lloyd Dobler would I have grown up to be an arrogant womanizing asshat?
(Not saying that's true of Cusack... Just wondering about myself.)

  • snickers says:

That's okay, Mr. Cusack. I hate the movies you're starring in now.

  • The first movie set I was ever on was ONE CRAZY SUMMER.
Cusack was aloof even then, but Demi Moore was unbelievably fucking hot.

  • pinkyt says:

It is kind of funny that "John Cusack is a douche" seems to be a pretty universally held belief in Hollywood. Living in LA, every time the guy's name comes up in conversation there are at least a couple people who either attest first hand that he is a jerk or have a friend who worked with him who said he is a jerk etc. So, either there is a conspiracy of epic proportions out there against him or he is a total douche. His latest comments are more evidence for option two.

HTTM is definitely a movie to go see if you want to laugh a lot. I was lucky to catch a screening last week. Have you seen "The You Know Who's" music video for Hot Tub Time Machine ?

  • Alivorm says:

So what if he says what he thinks personally? How is this "talking smack"? All I see is an opinion and someone searching for a scandal (no matter the size). Shouldn't we be happy that a Hollywood actor has the balls to just be genuine and not go along with the bullshit?

  • Andrew says:

The movie if flipping hilarios.; Kudos to Cuscak.

  • Jim says:

I think Cusack is a wonderful comedic actor. He slips easily into the character of the average joe (or average assassin) with a good, dry sense of humor. I don't know him personally, but I think it's funny that people try to drum up drama about what he's like away from the camera based on pure speculation that's seventh- or eighth-hand removed from the original source.
I'm a big fan of his older stuff, and I can still enjoy his parts in his recent movies even if they were somewhat awful movies (2012). He's still the same guy with the quick, dry wit.

  • Able Zeener says:

Wow is that like totally crazy or what dude? I mean really.

  • Oopy Doopy! says:

Can we reasonably expected a washed up hack like Cusack to have good movie taste?

  • Mike says:

My friend "Chris" has resembled a younger John Cusack for 20 years. He gets stopped by people almost every single day who say something about it. His friends talked him into dressing up as Lloyd Dobler for Halloween and he even won best costume for resembling John Cusack.
Anyways, Chris recently got on twitter to tweet with John about how much people have said they look alike. Cusack was such a jerk that he never would respond and after a few tweets Cusack even blocked him! What a slap in the face! That alone in my opinion proves he is a jerk!
MGM Studios obviously didn't look hard enough for a guy who looked more like a young John Cusack because that kid playing the young Cusack in HTTM doesn't even come close to resembling him as much as my friend does.

Yep, I'd say "douche" pretty much sums it up for me. Actually, that would probably be a big step up for him.
Anyone who would make a promise to appear at a cancer fundraiser in his deceased father's honor (in his hometown) and then just blow it off--leaving his sister, mother, siblings, cancer foundation members and many, many fans just hanging there waiting for him to show is a major douche! Not to mention the fact that he had the nerve to show up at the Cubs game the very next day to sing the 7th inning stretch (of course, no mention of the previous day's blow-off) and completely bitch out any reporter who dared try to comment on his extremely irresponsible behavior-- we wouldn't want anybody to believe that he really isn't just like Lloyd Dobbler now, would we? Yep, douche definitely nails it. As far as him not liking or understanding John Hughes's films? Sounds like sour grapes to me. Truth is, didn't sound like J.H. wanted him. He'd never be able to do even close to the job that Judd Nelson did as Bender.

So what are you saying? That just because he auditioned for something he HAD to have watched the final product? I don't follow your "logic"...

  • Alex says:

Boo! John Cusack cannot have an opinion! ... Oh, John Hughes, I for one loved the fact every one of your films needed a token Asian with such racist names as long-duck-dong. and no black people whatsoever. RIP you lovable racist bastard.

you people obliviously never did your homework on john cusack have you.. there are articles stating how much he hates his 80's movies now i dont know if you guys read about your actors and such but i read quite a bit and let just say wow.. but i herd many were he is a nice guy and some were he is not.. and well let me say this he is a human being he is allowed to have his off days to i would be like oh sorry i must caught you on your off day.. they have tons of stress. but all you guys can think about is dolber so what if he is not him.. gah people that was just a role he was playing and im not defending him but stop bashing on someone who is just being human and who knows knows what happens to him in that time eara were he hated it its not our place to judge we all have things we dont like about that year and want to forget it.. give the man a break will you.. and let him be.. see his movies or don't its up to you.. but i would judge him on his movies not his personal life... some of you need to grow up .. and i admit it those movies sucked the breakfast club and all.. i only like jude but the rest come on now.. im 25 years old im a girl .. and they sucked >

You're 25 and you can't write legibly. I hardly think that qualifies you as a viable movie critic.

Typical Hollywood Pig , biting the hand that feeds. If not for J. Hughes , the country he lives in , or his fan's Cuntsac would be a nobody. But alas he is somebody , and as such has a right to voice his opinion. And by doing so confirming what was suspected - He is a sack of vinager and water.

  • You gotta lot of nerve making those comments about John and his deceased father. John is the type of person who holds his family very near and dear to him and especially his father whom I am sure losing him was devastating. He could have easily felt too emotional about it and doing something like the game could have been an escape he needed. That's besides the point. If John hated his movies he wouldn't have said many other times how he was proved wrong about Say Anything. And while it might be true how he might not like some of the older ones, well many people sometimes have a hard time embracing their past. He's not the only one. Sure it sucks for hardcore 80's fans but its his right.
John is just sensitive and a very emotional person. He doesn't know how to let out his emotions sometimes. I've been a fan a long time and know these things. he can't always express his real feelings but the man has a really big heart for humanity. Also he's got 40,000 people tweeting him stuff. I'd block some too if I wanted to get down to the ones I was interested in chatting with. That's a hell of a lot of messages to sort through. I talk about some of his past films and he's never blocked me. He needs to be left alone. Shockozulu LAWS. Abide or get out.

and i agree with you 100% i just think people need to lay off of him.. and just accept he is nothing like his roles but he is still a kind person so your right on the money if some people stop being so ignorant noticed i say some. so don't bite my head off like one person did. and i see some of the twitters and a lot of it is on others how they post things to him to. just to get his attention. some people need to stop being such babies
