Miley Cyrus Tells Movieline Why She Left Twitter: 'It's Dangerous, It's Not Fun, It Wastes Your Life'

In a swank Santa Monica hotel overlooking the Pacific Ocean this weekend, Miley Cyrus spoke to reporters about her upcoming film, The Last Song -- the latest romantic weepie from best-selling author Nicholas Sparks, and the first for which he also wrote the screenplay. Also a first for Sparks: Song was conceived and specifically written for Cyrus, who was looking for a project to help her break out of Hannah Montanadom and graduate to more mature roles.

"It's interesting to leave my security blanket behind. It was such a huge deal in so many kids' lives," Cyrus said about the upcoming Hannah Montana finale. But as for revisiting the character in another film, she made it clear where she stands. "[Hannah's] wig is," she whistles, "out. One will be in a museum, and one will be... burned, or something."

I admitted to having developed a guilty pleasure addiction to her Twitter feed, and went into Miley tweet withdrawal when she abruptly pulled the plug in October with a message reading, "FYI Liam doesn't have a Twitter and he wants ME to delete mine with good reason." (Liam, or course, refers to her Song co-star and now boyfriend, handsome Aussie discovery Liam Hemsworth.) So what, exactly, was that reason?

"I was kind of, like, tired of telling everyone what I'm doing," Cyrus told Movieline. "I hate when I read things and celebrities are complaining like, 'I have no personal life.' I'm like, well that's because you write everything that you're doing."

"So I was that person who was like, 'I'm so sad. I have no real, normal life, everyone knows what I'm doing.' And I'm like, well that's my own fault because I'm telling everyone," Cyrus said. "And then I'd tweet, 'I'm here,' and I'd wonder why a thousand fans are outside the restaurant. Well, hello, I just told them. So I'm just, like, kind of thinking doesn't really make a lot of sense. Everything I'm saying is not really going with what I'm putting on the internet.

Asked if the change has been for the better, Cyrus took a moment to consider, then said, "I'm a lot less on my phone, I'm a little bit more social. I have a lot more real friends as opposed to friends who are on the internet who I'm talking to -- which is like not cool, not safe, not fun and most likely not real. I think everything is just better when you're not so wrapped up in [the internet]."

"I just think it's kind of lame," Cyrus continued. "I feel like I hang out with my friends and they're so busy taking pictures of what they're doing and putting them on Facebook that they're not really enjoying what they're doing. You're going to look back and have a million pictures, but you're not going to be in any of them. Because you're not having fun, you're too busy clicking away. So I think just enjoy the moment you're in, and stop telling people about it. Just enjoy it."

Does she realize she sounds like a mom when she says stuff like that?

"Yes, I do," she answered, smiling. "I'm telling kids, don't go on the internet, it's dangerous, it's not fun, it wastes your life, and you should be outside playing sports or something."

  • hi says:

    True! I love you Miley

  • accordingtome.... says:

she says like ALOT!!!! how lame, im pretty sure there are better adjectives out there then "like" and as for the last part?
“I’m telling kids, don’t go on the internet, it’s dangerous, it’s not fun, it wastes your life, and you should be outside playing sports or something.”

  • guess who??? says:

shes just a kid herself...she really needs to stop telling all her little minions what to do.

  • YO MOMS says:

This chick is wack..she cant be telling us what to do..her life is messed up any ways..so she should shut up about twitter/internet!

  • Snarf says:

Like OMG that interview was like totally deep, or some junk.

  • THAT IS SOO TRUE! and i agreein everything with her, because she's a celeb and everything 😀
Miley is my role model and what she just said is TOTALLY TRUE! even though i still have a twitter, BTW follow me! 🙂 (JohapGirl)but that's because I'm not famous, yet, i agree with her, once again, and if anyone has a problem.... DEAL WITH IT!

  • Karlacita! says:

Movieline bouncer? Isn't there an "all caps and you're out" clause anywhere? omgwtf?

  • Todd says:

You I find it funny when a celeb uses the old "I dont use twitter because I want privacy or I dont wont everyone know where I am and what I am doing" excuse to why they dont use twitter when the the solution is simle dont tweet every little thing. I think every celebrity need to have a Verified Twitter account even if they never use it or rarely do to prevent Imposters from pretending to be them. Plus twitter could be useful to quickly respond to rumors or misquotes in the press to take the truth to their fans

  • I've been on the internet since the 1980s. My met my partner 15 years ago (it's our Anniversasy today!) on the Internet in a chat room. Most of my friends have come from the internet, although it was very different proper to 2000. I use to meet 90% of the people I emailed or chat with, today I'm lucky if I meet 2%.
Having said that, Miley should have known better than to tweet her location in real time. Even I don't do that. I once tweeted I was going to be in PIcadilly Circus after a film if anyone wanted to meet me. I walked out into a crowd. Oops. I'd earlier tweeted the film I was seeing. I'm a LOT more cautious now.
Twitter has done great things for me and my life. It's connected me directly with people I admire or aspire to live up to. Even Kirstie Alley has taken an interst in me calling on my Live show (something created as a result of Twitter) and even tweeting that we'll make a film together this year. WOAH! I'm still spining!
It's really no different to standing in the middle of the room at a party and announcing your name to the crowd. We all want to socialize right?
I do agree that the Internet on a whole has become a place for 'friendships' that are limited to text on a screen and you never really know who is behind those keypresses.
The solution however is simple - go out and meet people! Just as you would ordinarly. In public places. You don't go home with the person you met at the bar on the first meet, so don't do it on the Net either, but get out and make the Internet a part of your life for a broader 1st degree of contacts. Make an effort - or use it as an excuse - to TRAVEL!

  • mandy. says:

why are you miley haters commenting on someone you supposedly "hate". thats pointless, wasting your time on someone you care nothing about then posting mean comments. really? thats just stupid.

  • Don't worry about it says:

I like the concept of what she's saying but I still don't respect Miley as a person and I still don't find her intelligent. Nice try, though.

  • caroline says:

    i kinda agree with her.....

  • SunnydaZe says:

Wait, I'm reading this on the internet... I can't imagine how it could be dangerous---
(a train jumps the tracks and smashes through house)

  • Cindy says:

I agree with her, but at the same time she's dumb. You can tweet about what you are doing, but don't name the place where you are at. That's why you had a bunch of fans waiting outside the restaurant. If you don't like being follow or anything, well just don't TWEET! about it!. Is that simple ladies & gentleman. I sometimes think Twitter is kind of pointless. I doubt it anyone ever reads what I post or at least one person does. The only reason I have it, it just gives me something to rant about or just put something random basically. I kind of wish I had something better to do than being in the computer though.

  • Myopinion says:

miley is right...i agree with all the things she said.
Quote: This chick is wack..she cant be telling us what to do..her life is messed up any ways..so she should shut up about twitter/internet!
Why cant she tell her opinion? Everyone has an opionion and they may publish it. And those who "follow" her opinion may do that..She doesnt command everyone to delete their twitter....it`s just an advice.
Never had twitter and never will have one...Its stupid. Put the time that you are putting in twitter, myspace, facebook etc in your live..Play a sport or gain knowledge about something you like.

  • Lauren says:

To be honest it sounds a little like she is being branded, a lot like other 'child stars' Like Britney. we all know how that turned out. Anyway, twitter was an insite into who she really is, and now she's been left it. My money is on her management and Disney can't afford for her to have a personality or showing any real life appeal incase she messes up again and has more underwear pictures out. To be frank, she sounds like a bit of a snob. She is bashing twitter and facebook and the users but at the same time used it for a long time. It's pathetic. Her life is hardly a real life. She needs to stop acting like she is a grown up and start acting like a person. We don't want the next generation of American and worldwide kids growing up to be little miley clones do we? Twitter doesn't ruin your life, only when you become an addict. And if you can become an addict to something like twitter that easily, well, let's see what happens in the future. Stop patronising people, stop acting like you're a grown up or mature, and just act like a decent roll model. Criminy.

"I kind of wish I had something better to do than being in the computer though."
    That's what Tron said! ZING!

  • Okay, I actually agree with Cyrus on this, for once. It's kind of boring to say what you're doing unless it's important. The only reason I have a Twitter is to promote my modeling and my website, that's it. I used to say what I was doing on Twitter, now I'll just stick to MySpace for something that personal. And even then, I will still not do it a lot, like Cyrus did.
One thing I did not like though, is when kept on repeating the word "like". Honestly, there are more words than "like" in a dictionary. Look it, Hun.
By the way, chick that says Cyrus is your Role Model, what are you? Ten? Have you seen the crazy stuff she's done? For instance, when she went to Disney Land, sang, only to get dumped by water. Did you know what happened afterward? Turns out, she wasn't even wearing a bra. And she was pretty much fully-sized in her chest area when that happened.
Instead of picking her to look up to, choose someone who won't do stupid stuff. Like Selena Gomez, or Demi Lovato. Someone with a little more dignity.

  • xluvmileycyrusx says:

If you feel the same way why are you on the computer reading everything about the life of the others??

  • Tricia says:

I truly believe it's her opinion if she likes Twitter or not. However, if she dislikes it so much then why does she post from Emily Osment's twitter sometimes? I just feel if you are going to openly dislike something you need to dislike it all the time, not just when it suits you. It gives conflicting opinions.

  • Dara says:

Some of these comments are hilarious...which is exactly why I love the internet! It's the best place to people-watch!
P.S. Anyone who considers Miley Cyrus a role model is either under the age of ten and needs some serious parental guidance in their life or is just crazy.

  • phyllis says:

Good decision. I see people airing their dirty laundry on facebook a lot. They also say I'm at the bank or I'm shopping etc. I think you made a good, sound choice.

  • Cindy says:

I find it funny when a girl of 16 thinks she knows everything. She has a lot of growing up to do. It would be best if she left the whole hollywood scene, go home, and grow.
