Who'll Boycott a Jay Leno Tonight Show?

tonightsho1ban.jpg

Conan O'Brien's announcement today was like a gust of fresh air cutting through the stench of NBC's classless late night maneuverings of recent days. Now TMZ -- who broke the story initially -- has another update: With Conan apparently out, the network has offered Leno his old time slot back, along with the original name: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. That's assuming Leno takes it back. One thing is certain: The simmering distaste for the longtime talk show host will now bubble over into bilious resentment and outright hostility, and the bad publicity is almost certain to bring new levels of booking headaches for the new, old Tonight Show. Here's ten people you can be all but certain you'll never see on the show again.

1. Patton Oswalt

Oswalt made his distaste for Leno fairly official on a blistering takedown on Comedy Death-Ray Radio, where he likened the bechinned one to Richard Nixon.

Chances: 100%

2. Norm MacDonald

A longtime Late Night with Conan O'Brien regular, who started on SNL around the same time Conan started broadcasting from 30 Rock. On his final Late Night appearance, he told some incredibly uncomfortable truths about Leno's decades of outfoxing the kings of late night.

3. Will Ferrell

Ferrell's ties to Conan go back as far as when the two worked at The Groundlings in the late '80s, where Lorne Michaels discovered O'Brien and hired him to write for SNL. Ferrell was Conan's first Tonight Show guest.

4. Jim Gaffigan

A staunch Conan loyalist who used to appear alongside the host in Pale Force, an animated series in which they fought crime with their paleness. Gaffigan tweeted today: "I'm on #teamconan Team Conan Please RT"

5. Amy Poehler

Poehler used to play Stacey Richter - the fictional kid sister of co-host Andy Richter - on Late Night.

why not put conan on after letterman on cbs? it'll be a complete cout d'etat for cbs.

  • same says:

Look Conans ratings were dropping fast , yes , I remember when Leno took over for Johnny , But Leno made that transition easy , , it was NOT lenos time to retire when they retired him , I recall several comments leading to just that , there was specifically no reason what so ever for NBC to have retired Leno , and now look whats happened , because Conan is younger and the prez of NBC is younger he probably thought getting rid of Jay was a good move - this guy running NBC now , I equate him to that of the likes of Matt Millan , when he ran the Detroit Lions right into the ground - well this guys into the heroes and there just aren't that many shows on NBC that are that good anymore Leno going back to Late night is a good start on NBC's part , now make somemore good moves !!

That is why i like Colbert and Jon Stewart!!! Them 2 are funny!!! Real Comedy. After that i like Conan and Craig Ferguson and i was happy that Conan got bumped to the Tonight Show so i could watch Conan then then Ferguson.

LOL - ones a pedophile and the other just ain't right - did ya ever see a stud horse tryin' to mount a gelding ? thats because they now the smell of the sweet stuff as opposed to the stink ho - in O'Donnells case both hers are stink ho's - in Sterns case keep yur kids and yur sheep locked up when hes in town !!

I do believe you are the blockhead. If you are old enough to watch late night TV, you should know that you should have used 'they're' where you placed their and 'you're' where you placed your.

Leno will kick Conans ass in late night !!

  • jimmy(not fallon) says:

Conan and his $30 million will be OK. Im more worried about poor Andy!
Conan is a cut above Dennis Miller but his act wore out a long time ago. Im sure Jay was pressured into his premature departure by NBC's misguided attempt to placate Conan four years ago! I loved Johnny Carson on Who Do You Trust but was disappointed in him on the Tonight Show. Let's face it these guys are only as good as their writers. Let's bring Pat Sajac back to late night TV!!! God Bless Steve Allen and Jack Paar!
    HOORAY for GEORGE LOPEZ!!!!!

  • Kate says:

Except for Will Ferral ( who continues to appear in the same film with different costumes, over and over and over...ad nauseum) who ARE those other people who 'dislike' Leno? Believe me, once they have some 'project' they want to tout to the American people, they'll be calling Jay for a spot. That's where most late night viewers will be watching. Letterman jumped the shark long ago and sealed the coffin by publically admitting to cheating on his wife with the staff. Jay IS safe...funny and while not Johnny Carson, he's close enough for this generation who might not have understood Carson's jokes. They were a little more cerebral than todays audience.

  • DonR says:

Don't watch either on of them. The only NBC program I watch is the NFL.

  • Johann says:

Well said Bill! NOW - time to run along, or you'll be late for your shift at Walmart - good advice about 'success' though! You're the BESTEST!!

  • you got to be kidding says:

Fallon? Have you ever watched Fallon? talk about a boring, uncreative, and unfunny person. Fallon has no talent and his jokes are soooooooo bad...keep using the canned laughter Fallon. Please, please, i don't care...Conan, Leno, but PLEASE NO FALLON!

  • Maddie Kelly says:

In TV, your show either survives or gets cancelled. Conan was in trouble even before Jay Leno lost his prime time spot. Unfortunately,
I think Mr. O'Brien would have lost his job eventually, anyway.
Conan did well in his old time slot so maybe he needs to go back to that time

  • Educate yourself SAME-Same Old SAME OLD... says:

It took Leno 2 years to build his audience after Carson, NBC give Conan 7 Months, And don't forget it was Leno's show that was a Lead in to Conan's tonight Show.
And for all you uneducated idiots, If you do some checking NBC was the one that wanted Leno out and made the Announcement 5 Years in Advance to not have the same mishap that Letterman & Leno had had on who would take over the Tonight Show.
So NO all you Morons that think Conan pushed Leno out, It Never Happened that way, NBC gave Leno a Retirement Packages worth 80 Million$ Plus NBC Stock to Leave in 5 Years and have Conan Take Over.
Leno even Announced that it happened that way 5 Years in Advance and spoke of it often, The Problem is Leno Lied and Didn't Retire, Made some bad Investments and even though people believe he is rich his greed has taken over that overly profuse Chin and head of his, And leveraged some folks in a corner.
Lemo Lied, NBC Lied and Conan got caught in the Middle, Lenos Number where worse then Conan's 1 and a Half years after Leno's start on the Tonight Show, But Conan was only given a 7 month stretch to fix Lenos 10:00 show Dismal rating and cary it forward... Real Fair.
Carson was the Best, and Conan is the closest to Carson then Leno would even dream about.
Leno Failed at the 10:00 Spot and will fail at the 11:35 spot, "You can NEVER GO HOME" Lemo has and will still fail due to the dryness and drab dull stale rerun talk show garbage he has played for years.
And as he tanks with NBC, Leno would have wished he stayed at home with his cars and stale old Plastic on his couch, by the looks of it the Boycott has only begun and will get larger, When Zucker and the rest of the Corrupt Mob get thrown out, Maybe just maybe NBC can reclaim some Dignity, At this time Neither Leon or NBC have any to play with and disgust is on millions of peoples minds due to the "TREATMENT" of a person that got caught in the middle.

  • Kristyn says:

For me personally, I always found Jay Leno's humour more to my personal style. However, I think for me I will no longer tune in to any of Jay Leno's future programming because this whole controversy completely turned me off of him. Regardless of the fact that maybe he shouldn't have retired, the fact that he did. Just because his new show failed doesn't mean he can take back an opportunity he gave to Conan just because he feels like it. He was on the air for 17 successful years, has plenty of money, and could without a doubt find something to do without taking something away from someone else.
Like I said, Conan's humour was never really to my liking, but I think he should have been given a chance to do the show he was promised he would be doing. He moved his whole life to L.A. just to have it be taken away by Leno because Leno is selfish. He gave up The Tonight Show and shouldn't have it just be given back because he has more clout with NBC. It's not fair or moral, ya know! Haha

  • JOANNA says:

What a batch of crap...... on both sides.
It never ceases to amaze me how people always believe
only what the want to beieve.
PEOPLE....Which ever one "YOU" don't like is the one you blame.
Bullshit. NBC is a SOB and they will get worse. .

  • charlie says:

ok...we have two votes....let's go for it.

  • Elina says:

Oh, is that so? Then how do you explain Leno announcing that IT WAS HIS IDEA to give the Tonight Show to Conan? (http ://www.funnyordie.com/videos/6d1caacad1/jay-s-2004-announcementkcd.com/) Conan had so many lucrative offers five years ago to take his show to another network at a better time. But he stuck around because he was promised the Tonight Show and five years later, they just snatch it from him after only SEVEN MONTHS! Leno had over 17 months before he dominated Letterman in the ratings, and it was based on pure luck! He managed to get Hugh Grant after the hooker scandal before any other interviewer. People tuned in and he managed to get them to stay and watch. Leno would have never had a chance if Carson had decided not to retire and return to the same network. Leno doesn't have any professional integrity and never did.

  • Dana Lafreniere says:

Here is a new Powerhouse Late night Line up for Fox, an 11:35 Conan O'brien show Followed By a Later Show Hosted By Joel Mchale! They would Take Over!

  • Obvious Man says:

You all keep arguing about who YOU think is funnier but, in the end it is a VERY simple numbers game.
Contrary to what any of you may think about who is better, the ratings for the Tonight Show TANKED when Conan took over. Leno's 10:00 show has been seeing a decline in ratings as well but Leno's 10:00 show's ratings still completely crush those of Conan's tonight show. Based on ratings alone, it makes perfect financial sense to return the Tonight Show to what it was.
But wait! There's more numbers to it than that. You see, both Leno and O'brien have multimillion dollar contracts and whoever gets the both will have to have their contract paid out. Leno's contract is 80 Million. O'brien's contract is 60 million. So, if NBC boots O'brien, they save 20 million dollars.
So, Leno draws better ratings and therefore more advertising dollars. They need to keep him. But, getting rid of O'brien saves them 20 million as well. It's a no brainer!
It's a business, Coco must go!

  • yep says:

Craig Ferguson is far funnier and far more genuine on-air than either Leno or Conan. Of course, Craig won't leave CBS since his boss is Dave, but that aside, I find Craig to be eminently more qualified to assume the mantel of Tonight Show king at this point - Jay's now a retread, Dave ain't going anywhere, Kimmel/Fallon together don't have the draw, and Colbert/Stewart are too smart to take the gig.

  • I'mDaBest says:

The thing is...Conan has natural comedic talent. Leno isn't all that funny on his own. Sure, he can get laughs (when he's written a good enough joke), but he can't stand much on his own. Conan can get laughs even when the jokes written for him fail.
Also, his ratings might not be as high as Leno's were, but Leno had 17 years to build up to where his ratings were. You'd have to be a moron not to take that into consideration. I doubt he was all that popular when he first appeared.
I hope Leno get piss poor ratings the rest of his term at NBC. He deserves to fail. And don't blame NBC alone. Leno could have said no to the whole thing, but he didn't. He wants to have his cake and eat it too. You don't give a kid a remote control car for Christmas, then take it away from him a few months later. Especially when the kid views the toy as the best toy he's ever had. That's just dickish.
On my cynical note, I think it's even likely this whole thing is a charade put on for ratings. Conan's ratings have exploded. Everyone's talking about it. Controversy is king in the media world.

Never a fan of Leno anyway, I'll boycott him. lol

  • robb says:

Wow! I didn't think people actually watched cable tv anymore

Most of those people i never heard of. Maybe if it would make a bigger difference if really famous stars did a boycott? And not people like will ferrell (whose movies lose money)?
