Law & Order: Criminal Intent Discharges Vincent D'Onofrio and Three Regulars

House isn't the only television program shuttling out original characters. It was announced late last night that Law & Order: Criminal Intent is gearing up for dramatic cast changes during its upcoming ninth season that include four regular cast members leaving the Major Case Squad. Vincent D'Onofrio who plays Robert Goren, the startlingly intense and intuitive badge with his own sordid past, will exit next March. Who will he take with him?

Kathryn Erbe, who plays Goren's partner Alex Eames, will also be phased out next season, along with Eric Bogosian, who plays the force's captain. As reported earlier this year, Jeff Goldblum's on-screen partner Julianne Nicholson (who played Megan Wheeler) will be replaced by Saffron Burrows.

Other details about the casting shake-up are still unclear. Law & Order's franchise creator, Dick Wolf has dealt with his fair share of casting roulette in the past, often remarking how the viewers prefer the story lines to the actual actors: "I'm a firm believer that the Law & Order audience, in a sense looks forward to these casting changes."

There is a chance that D'Onofrio could return for future guest appearances to assist the new central detective partnership played by Goldblum and Burrows.

wow, I ONLY watched the criminal intent because of Vincent. He made the show sophisticated.

    • Mrs. says:

      I concur with other viewers.
Iwhen goren and eases leave, so will I. whats the point?
Write another show, do a commercial, I will be watching them on Netflix as you try to bait and switch.

  • isa says:

Please bring back Goren and Eames and even Noth and Nichols. LOVE THEM. I guess I have to watch the reruns.

  • Brenda Buren says:

DEAR MR. WOLF, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO YOUR VIEWERS? WHILE JEFF GOLDBLUM IS A FANTASTIC ACTOR, YOU HAVE TRULY JUST SHOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT, AND IN A BIG WAY BY COUNTING OUT D'ONOFRIO AND ERBE. I HAVE WATCHED THE EPISODES OF THIS SHOW SO MANY TIMES I CAN SPOUT THE DIALOGUE VERBATIM. I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH THAT I HAVE 2 SETS OF THE DVDS, ONE FOR UPSTAIRS AND ONE FOR DOWNSTAIR5. WHEN YOU BOUGHT BORGOSIAN INTO THE PICTURE I WASN'T TOO HAPPY ABOUT THAT BUT DID LEARN TO LIVE WITH THE CHANGE. NO MORE. YOU HAVE JUST LOST A LOYAL FAN.

  • oldylocks says:

to the absolute DOLT who said "God! why do people watch these shows" I have only one thing to say.."God, if you hate these shows, what are you doing HERE?"

  • Glynn61 says:

Mr. Wolf, you obviously have lost any sense of business acumen you ever had. Without Goren and Eames, I simply will not watch this show. I am watching reruns right now and the casting is pure brillance. If it isn't broke, don't fix it is a great addage. Too bad you didn't abide by it.

  • Merybarb says:

I have watched Law and Order - Criminal Intent from the first episode and it was only because of Vincent D'ONOFRIO in the role of Goren. I watch all of the L&O shows but CI was always my favorite because of the actor. I can't believe that Dick Wolf made those comments about people liking the storyline more than the actors. Maybe in the original Law and Order, this is true because they have changed the actors so many times....but CI and SVU viewers have come to love the actors who have portrayed the main characters for so long in both series.
I am bummed and have no interest in watching CI anymore since VD was my main reason for watching that show. He was brillant as Goren and no one will ever replace that character for me.

  • Jennifer says:

So many of these previous comments express my comment succinctly; D'onofrio and Erbe are Criminal Intent without them I will not be watching. I don't know if D'Onofrio meant to do it but he brought back Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes performance, Brilliant.

  • June says:

So they think Jeff Goldblum is replacing Vinny D? He can't be replaced, nor can his partner, Ms. Erbe! It's like casting Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton! It's not going to work!! Excuse me while I watch my reruns of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

  • jay bounar says:

bad move cock wolf letting an unbelievable performer like vincent and eames go.law and order c/i can kiss their ass goodbye

  • mb says:

Vincent D'Onofrio and his character depths and style as Detective Goren are going to be sorely missed by me. I believe he was the best actor on television. I was hoping that he would have left the department to discover true happiness, perhaps love, that would have made the viewers a little more ok with it. Doesn't Mr. Wolf realize that Eames and Goren are why we watched?

  • alicia morgan says:

wow, jeff goldblume i guess that is how you spell his name... anyway since dick wolfe changed ci. it's all so boring. i feel sorry for s.v.u. because you guys are next. i will not watch ci.no longer.

  • June Harris says:

. Please bring back the Goran and Eames characters. Vincent D'Onofrio
    is s great actor.
    Thankyou

  • elaine dunn says:

I think this is such garbage, wolfe must be making too much money,if he losses goran and eames the money won't be coming in from that show anymore.People stop watching u don't get the bucks-see how stupid the decision. SAVE GORAN AND EAMES. Canada will not be watching anymore.

  • Dorothy says:

I watch Criminal Intent BECAUSE of Vincent. Goldblum is OK but that twit with him only acts with her mouth and lips. Watch them constantly twitch and pout. With Vincent gone I probably won't watch it at all. I stopped watching Law and Order because of the Left Wing stuff and Special Victims got so boring. Criminal Intent was the last and the best because of Vincent. But why did he get so fat?

  • Helen says:

Present actors are OK, but I don't find myself linking as with Goran & Eames. They are truly missed! Wolf needs to re-examine his choices. Too many people are stating their "displeasure." I miss the repartee & I don't "save" the shows as before. BRING BACK THE BEST!!!!!!!!

  • lackeylocal says:

Well Goldblum is leaving the show......Guess C.I. will go down the drain. Wolf wouldn't /couldn't lower himself to get Dennis or Kathryn back.

  • DHT says:

I have enjoyed all the L&O shows, with CI being my favorite. But, I have to agree with the majority...the main reason I watched the show was Goren and Eames; especially Vincent D'Onofrio. I won't even watch when I see it's an episode with other actors. I guess I'm done with CI.

  • jax200 says:

Like many great shows in the past, there is often a leading character actor such as D'Onofrio that gives it a special quality. However, to say he is the only reason I watch L&O CI is shortchanging some great writers, directors and supporting actors. There is eventually a time for change; I will miss them, but I will continue to watch for all the above reasons, as well as I think Goldblum does a great job for the series. In the end it will probably be better that D'Onofrio, et al. move on to other adventures.

  • Joy says:

The cast doesn't matter???? Is this guy insane? The show is doomed without Vincent. He makes it interesting with his quirks and hey he's just easy on the eyes as they say. Jeff Goldblum "The Fly"???? Oh come on....you just put a stake in the heart of this show

  • Phyllis Manzella says:

Dennis D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erby made Criminal Intent. Why on earth would you let them go?

  • Lynne says:

We love this show in the UK, but as soon as Goren and Eames went down to 13 epsiodes a season I only watched every second week when it was their turn on screen. I doubt I will watch it beyond their last episode - D'Onofrio's character's quirkiness is what made this a must watch show perfectly complimented by Erbe's cool irony. This show will be diminished without them.

  • anonymous says:

Vincent could pass as Orson Welles's son...he is both dynamic and excellent method actor. No one - no other has his style of acting.... intriguing and convincing... will he ever have a love interest.. have seen him in other pieces... brilliant actor.... PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE HIM FROM CRIMINAL INTENT...

  • Linda Powers says:

Without Bobby playing his part the show is just not the same. I look for other channels that rerun old shows, and i watch them over and over. Wolf made a big mistake. Linda

  • Colleen Naqshbandi says:

I have lost interest in all L&O and CSI programs because of changes in actors. Vincent and Katheryn made the show. There are few actors these days that we can pin our interests on. Vincent played a cop so well that it gave me shivers and reminded me vividly of read detectives that I have met. His intensity as an actor is titilating and memorable. Please bring L&O CI back on! I miss them both.

  • Sandee jo says:

The reason I like Law and Order and L&O Criminal Intent series is that we don't have to slog through of personal lives week after week after week. There is just enough family information to fill out the characters as real people. The plot and the fabulous writing are the keys for me. That being said, Eams and Gorham have not lost their power to bring new energy to the long running series. When Eams was on maternity leave the substitutes were not complementary to Gorham's character and I skipped most of those episodes. The partners ARE partners, why mess with a great thing unless the actors want a rest?
If Mr. Wolf is looking for change, L&O Special Victims would be a great show for a change of leads. For example, does Det. Stabler realize that he looks like the Muppet, Sam the Eagle, with his "I'ma bad guy frown"? And the sneer of Det. Benson--really--could you please bring more to the table? The plots are all the same for the L&O SV so all the interesting characters are those who support the 'leads'.
The original L&O still remains fresh though many actors have come and gone. This show can rely on its great writing, characters, and actors. Each change maintains the continutity of the fresh plots and new personalities...way to go Mr. Wolf.
