Jamie Foxx vs. Miley Cyrus: What Hath Movieline Wrought?

foxx_miley.jpg

As much as it was a pleasure to introduce this site yesterday, it came as even more of a thrill to be the first! Site! Anywhere! to point out Jamie Foxx's charming Easter rant against poor, defenseless Miley Cyrus. Now that the story (and the corresponding soundtrack from Foxx's radio show) are slathered from Hell to Creation, the last 24 hours have provoked a period of intense reflection. But not too much reflection.

It was just a matter of time before the word and reaction spread, much of it critical of Foxx, 41, for joking on-air that the 16-year-old sensation should "do heroin," "make a sex tape" and/or "catch chlamydia on a bicycle seat." The Oscar-winner himself is the father of a teenage girl, after all, and had a white comic made similar remarks about her (or any African-American teen), it probably would have cost him/her a lot more than an apology.

Not that Foxx is likely to offer as much to Miley any time soon, if some recently recirculated comments to Parade are any indication:

"I'm a comedian at heart," he said. "What's funny is that some people were trying to get me to rethink my act. They were like, 'You're an Oscar winner now. Maybe you shouldn't push the envelope with your jokes.' A black artist can't worry about white folks digging him. The minute you say, 'I want people in South Dakota to like me,' that's when you lose it. You just have to do your thing."

Consider it done, I guess. And how.

I love this. And I feel particularly thrilled because just last week I wrote on my blog, "Why don't more people make fun of Mylie Cyrus's giant buckteeth? It seems like totally fair game, and as a young starlet, people should be picking apart her physical attributes by now."
    Now that destiny is fulfilled.
And yes, I did just plug my blog. But in a relevant way.

  • Rand says:

Yup, let's just keep that racial double standard in place. Screw the folks in South Dakota, but don't ever, ever, piss off anyone in Harlem.
Wonderful and inspirational thinking, Jamie. Thanks a million. After all, we've got to keep those uppity white-trash types in their place.

  • Furious D says:

I suspect Disney paid him to do it, hoping the outrage would boost "protest ticket" sales. They never miss a trick at Disney, ever.
As for Miley herself, while I find all of her products the embodiment of everything wrong in marketing-based entertainment, I just simply ignore it all. While slightly pitying her for the inevitable spitting out by Disney once they've chewed her up.

  • el smrtmnky says:

can't blame it on the alcohol this time

  • jeb says:

miley is a spoiled classless brat, but she is just a girl. she's annoying, but i don't think people should get too viscious with her. believe me, i'd like to slap her myself--- and i don't want jamie to recant what he said, and loved every minute of radiohead's postings about her... but, i don't think we should set out a bat-wielding mob to take on someone who is, just a girl.

  • anonymous says:

Yeah had he been white and said that about a black girl...... SAD SAD SAD!!! I Have lost alot of respect!!!

  • mentir says:

Riveting and timely, Jamie. Stay tuned three months from now when he riffs on the Lohan/Ronson breakup.

  • Inhaler says:

"A black artist can’t worry about white folks digging him."
Dave Chappelle is a great example of a black comedian that "white folks" can relate to, and his success from Half Baked and Chappelle's Show are perfect examples.
You can stay in your racial niche like Katt Williams or Cedric the Entertainer, but it's when you have the courage and tact to branch out to the masses that you can attain true beguile.
And Mr. Foxx, if a ruthless verbal assault on a teenage girl, regardless of her color, is keeping it real - I think you're poorly misrepresenting "black artists."

  • a.n. onymous says:

Love the fallback to the "black comedians." Who's the first to cry racism? Usually those most guilty of committing it.

  • Scarlett says:

I used to have the utmost respect for Jaime Foxx...great actor...great comedian....but considering that he has a teen daughter himself, for him to conduct himself in this matter is shameful and actually racist. If a white man/woman comedian were making such slanderous jokes about his black teenage daughter and perhaps referred to things such as "smoking crack" or having illegitimate children by multiple partners it would have inflamed him and the black community. I have lost all respect for Mr. Foxx.

  • LeAnn says:

    YOU........ARE A TOTAL JACKASS

  • Colander says:

I think Miley's teeth are beautiful and classy.

  • amparker says:

I think his behavior is disgusting -- hatred of young women and of women is disgusting. And yes if it was a white guy talking about a young black woman the discussion would be totally reversed. Of course none of the so-called "friends" of Rihanna helped her out.

  • JASONELIAS says:

Jamie's a jerk, really. The biggest problem with his comments about Miley Cyrus, it isn't funny, it's kind of sad. It's not like Foxx's career's on fire anyway, there's not going to be a Ray II anytime soon...

  • Matthew says:

By some of these comments I see how sick the world really is. Soon we will be destroying each other with violence and not words. Words just lead to violence.
This is a child we are talking about here and other children now are brought into this sickness. I hope all peolple who support this feel ashamed and if not it could be far too late. Enjoy ripping each other to pieces but in all reality none of you will win. For those who stand on the side of what is right keep building on that and know that your persecution is well worth the effort! Our children are important. Give them something to hope for...

What makes this whole thing sad is the irony of it. It is easy to get angry with Jamie Foxx but none of us seem to pay attention to the studios that turn innocent little girls in to heroin using, std infected, home movie porn stars. Perhaps, (I know it is a long shot) Jamie was using her as a representative of an entirely screwed up system that exploits young women, distorts them and then leaves them bald like Brittany. The beauty of comedy is they get to say what we're afraid to and can get away with it. Everybody, get over yourselves, if you need to pick a target, aim somewhere else.

  • vern says:

Guys bag on girls that they think are hot, just like in grade school... so Jamie has to bag on this white girl, because black guys love white women... almost as much as they love chicken.

  • Justin Kase says:

“I’m a comedian at heart”. Really? I wouldn't use the word comedian so lightly since nothing about this rant was humorous. It has NOTHING to do with race and everything to do with class or lack thereof.

  • Deeton says:

    God, who cares?

  • UNfunny says:

Miley Cyrus is worth more money now than Jamie Fox will see in his lifetime. Can you spell j-e-a-l-o-u-s? Little teeanged white girl has Hollywood POWER! Big black unfunny racist clown can't handle it. Foxx's 15 minutes of fame was over as soon as he walked off the Oscar stage. No one listens to his garabage on-air radio show anyway. Foxx has been riding the train to Loserville for a looong time!

  • Scarlett says:

Glad you think so.....apparently you don't like that analogy....I would be willing to bet alot of money on what race you are.

  • joi says:

    don't be jealous jamie

  • watchdog says:

What would happen if his name was Don Imus?

  • mary says:

How do people that are always yelling it is not about race, condon this type of thing? And he can say all he wants that it is not about a white person digging a black comic, where would his bank account be if it weren't for the whites buying tickets and paying big bucks to see his shows and his movies?? Yes, I certainly do think that he truly would not like it if the whites did not dig him..........he would feel it in his pocketbook. You cannot, no matter who you are get laughs at other peoples expense, no matter what your color...he needs to learn that!!

  • mary says:

Wonder what Oprah will say about this? She will be the first one on her white horse to defend him, as will all the other black ladies on tv that cannot for the life of them see anything wrong about it because it was a black man saying it about a white girl. And that is just what she is, a 16 year old girl, way to pick on someone, Jamie at least that way you might win!! Good remark about Don Imus...shoe is on the other foot now and you will NOT hear one of the black tv people trash Jamie, even if they hate what he did and said!! Things just like this will undo all the good that they have done in the past, you want to be treated equal, then you must act equal and be able to admit that some times people no matter their color mess up big time and this is certainly one of them. Wonder if it was worth trashing a 16 year old kid, makes him a big man doesn't it? And this needs to stop when they all say I am a comedian...who the heck cares, you are still stepping way out of line in order to get a laugh...enough already!!
