Happy New Year — and Good Riddance to the Five Worst Movie Trends of 2011

Happy New Year — and Good Riddance to the Five Worst Movie Trends of 2011

Not to be terribly negative at the start of the new year – because any year that gifted us the Fassboner had to be a pretty good year, amirite? – but there were a handful of recurring trends in the movies of 2011 that could stand a rest as we charge ahead through 2012. First let’s list the good ones, the motifs in otherwise disparate films, from a wide range of filmmakers indie and studio-backed, new and established, that were actually kind of awesome to marinate in this past year. (Goslingmania comin' atcha!)

New York Film Critics Circle Kicks Off Awards Season By Anointing Streep, Pitt, The Artist

The New York Film Critics Circle made waves by moving their awards announcement up to November 29 in an effort to claim "First!" but Oscar-watchers have to admit: Between the NYFCC Twitter roll-out and this morning's Spirit Awards nominations, there's a crackle in the air on an otherwise slo-o-o-w news day. Read Terrence Malick's 1979 Script Notes from the Tree of Life Precursor Qasida

Read Terrence Malick's 1979 Script Notes from the Tree of Life Precursor Qasida

When Paramount gave a post-Days of Heaven Terrence Malick $1 million, carte blanche, to make his next film, he began developing a highly ambitious project about the creation of life and the cosmos entitled Qasida (or, simply, Q). Of course, the studio balked at the abstract Malick-ness of it all, the film stalled, and the director took the next two decades off from filmmaking. But! Now you can read Malick's own Q script notes, circa 1979, and envision how his globe-trotting Q eventually morphed into this year's Tree of Life.

Ryan Reynolds and Willem Dafoe Do Tree of Life-Lite in Delayed Fireflies in the Garden

If Sean Penn didn't love the abstract narrative Terrence Malick employed in Tree of Life, maybe he'll dig the pretty-similar, much more conventional stuff in the long-delayed Fireflies in the Garden -- a Tree of Life Lite starring Ryan Reynolds as a middle-aged man who returns to his Texas childhood home to deal with his strained relationship with his stern father (Willem Dafoe). Period flashbacks, memories of an angelic mother (Julia Roberts), and a pivotal death that inspires exploration into deep emotional scars? The only things missing are the cosmic clouds of particles laden with meaning. Would Penn approve?

Tree of Life vs. The Social Network, and More Golden Trailer Awards Match-Ups

Awards season isn't completely over for some of your favorite films from last year: The 12th annual Golden Trailer Awards pit the best marketing campaigns, trailer, and posters from films in 2010 and 2011 against one another, which means the Tree of Life trailer is up against that of The Social Network, the vampire remake Let Me In competes with the spooky remake Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and Cars 2 battles Rango. Never mind that half of these films haven't come out yet!

Stoners May Enjoy Terrence Malick's Tree of Life

Stoners May Enjoy Terrence Malick's Tree of Life

A tweet from the official Fox Searchlight Twitter account today brought to mind a surprising new target demographic for Terrence Malick's Cannes-winning Tree of Life in the Los Angeles area: "LA: Are you aware Arclight Hollywood showtimes for TREE OF LIFE include a 4:20 screening daily?" Just remember, weed and Tree of Life go together better than LSD and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Right, 2001 acid-freakout guy?
