Seth MacFarlane To Host Oscars: Good Idea/Bad Idea? (UPDATE: Watch MacFarlane's Oscar Announcement)

Oscars Seth Macfarlane

The Academy Awards could finally get the dynamic host they've been looking for in Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane, whom Deadline reports has been anointed emcee for the 2013 Oscars telecast. Given his solid SNL hosting debut (which began with an Oscars-appropriate song-and-dance monologue) the Ted creator is a well-rounded choice in a town that doesn't actually have many writer-actor-producer-singer-funny voice-doers, let alone any willing to regularly push the boundaries of good taste. [UPDATE: Watch Seth MacFarlane as he makes his official Oscar announcement via video.]

But let us not forget, as Deadline reminds us: "Of course during the Emmys he didn’t find his mark and stood on the stage awkwardly when he was a presenter. But, that said, it’s an inspired choice by the Academy..."

The man loves to sing and loves to put teddy bears in compromising positions. He's got my vote of approval. The question is, will the over-50 Oscar-watching crowd take to a little giggity-giggity in their Academy Awards?

  • As long as he doesn't do Stewie or Quagmire voices, I'm ok with it.

Though, I'd much rather prefer Karl Urban to host. In full Dredd regalia. But on his own is fine, too.

  • Jake says:

Sure. Why not? The Oscars are such a constant mess anyway, why not try anything? McFarlane has been fine in some of those roasts. He can be annoying at times, but who isn't when they do the voices for three tv shows. And sometimes he's really funny, even if his shows are pretty lame. It's not like there is some obvious choice for Oscar host. So let's give it a whirl and see what happens.

  • He may become so insufferably full of himself during the telecast I predict an Academy Awards first to take place:
The Orchestra will actually play-off the host.

    • KevyB says:

I don't think I could get through three hours plus of those hair plugs, the Botox, all the surgery and that atrocious spray tan. Furthermore, the only thing semi-funny about Ted was a teddy bear being saying and doing things that would never be allowed on the Oscars. This could actually be a train wreck.

  • Megan says:

I've been a Family Guy fan since the show started, so I'm down with it. Seth is a great character/voice actor, as well as a fantastic singer. He's also pretty sharp. So as long as he showcases all the good qualities and not the annoying ones, it should be a good watch.

    ANYTHING'S better than James Franco.

  • andy geren says:

That's good since he did best selling comedy of summer.

  • AD says:

Everything about this choice seems great on paper. Hopefully the show's writers don't leave MacFarlane out to dry with poor material. The guy is a ridiculously talented singer, as I'm sure everyone will agree, and he's pretty funny as well. I've been a Family Guy fan since the show debuted, and I think Ted was the funniest film of 2012 thus far, so I'm all for this.
