Oscar Preview: Free Quvenzhané Wallis

"Best Director is a nomination I can see for Beasts; it looks and plays like no other movie you'll see this year. But Best Actress? Remember, it's not like throwing a 13-year-old or even a talented 9-year-old up against four adults. The kid you're seeing onscreen is 6. And yeah, comparing actresses is always apples and oranges, but with the other four, whoever they end up being, we'll be able to talk about their performances and not the fact that they were bribed with candy on long days, or had their lines rewritten because long words were too hard to say, or were filmed without being aware of it in the hope that natural moments would be captured. Well, maybe the candy thing happens with adults. But to quote the star herself, 'I didn't even know about acting. That was just me.' Also: Telling a kid that young that now her job is to go be interviewed by a lot of grown-ups and have her picture taken so that she can win a prize? Ugh. Yecch. Gross." [Grantland]

So are you saying she did a great job, or no? And if she didn't grow up in an impoverished environment like the one depicted in the movie (don't think so, because she is the child of two married parents) in a house without running water, television, telephone, and clean clothes, and a menagerie of animals scurrying about, then she is ACTING. And that was an Oscar-worthy performance. Those other things about lines being rewritten and bribery doesn't sound unique to just this actress and what has that to do with a nomination? And she's not worthy of an Oscar because she's not looking forward to the task of having to do promotion rounds and red carpets? Really?? I've heard of men who go around taking pictures of people getting punched in the face. Sounds to me like Quvenzhane is not the only one who doesn't like the flash and the intrusion. Did this writer actually SEE the movie? Where is the critique of her performance? She's a poor little black girl getting bribed by candy being filmed doing things in her everyday life? Sigh.

THIS MOVIE WAS FANTASTIC. THE ENTIRE CAST WAS OUTSTANDING. Q. WALLIS IS A VERY SPECIAL, GIFTED CHILD WITH TREMENDOUS DEPTH AND TALENT. AND D. HENRY GAVE A PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCE. BENH ZEITLIN IS A GENIUS. IF HOLLYWOOD ACTUALLY TOOK THE CHANCE AND THE TIME ON UNKNOWN TALENT AND RISK MAKING MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS, THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO BRING AUDIENCES BACK TO THE THEATERS AND MAKE THE MONEY THEY WANT (THEN STUDIO EXECS WON'T GET FIRED.....I.E. JOHN CARTER OF MARS). I MIGHT TUNE INTO THE OSCARS THIS YEAR IF THIS MOVIE GETS NODS.IN ADDITION, I'M TIRED OF SEEING THE SAME FACES IN HOLLYWOOD. THEIR PERFORMANCES ARE USUALLY PREDICTABLE AND THEN THEY GET AN OSCAR FOR PLAYING THE SAME CHARACTER THEY WON THE OSCAR FOR 5 YEARS EARLIER.
