Should Adam Sandler Star in the Summer School Remake?

For some reason a remake of the 1987 comedy classic Summer School has been in development hell for years, and it may finally come to fruition under Adam Sandler's Happy Madison banner. Though Sandler hasn't yet threatened to star as the slacker high school gym teacher forced to start caring about education -- a role played with Hawaiian-shirted panache by one Mr. Mark Harmon, and don't you forget it -- the possibility certainly looms over this project, as THR reports that Happy Madison is negotiating to produce. Take a trip down memory lane with the original trailer and decide: If not Sandler, who could fill Harmon's sockless shoes? (And will there be a part for Kirstie Alley?)

I have an absurd and probably unearned fondness for this movie, so not happy with the idea of a Sandlerized remake.

  • Mel says:

No. No, no, no, no. HELL TO THE NO.

  • Lately, Adam Sandler movies haven't been colossal hits.
More of a kiss of death. [Truly, "KISS OF DEATH" is a great
    movie--Richard Widmark is fantastic!]
So unless somebody has invented an anti-stinky flavored
    Chapstick, I'd say no, thanks.

  • Max Renn says:

Adam Sandler is the Uwe Boll of comedy.

  • KevyB says:

"...hasn't yet threatened to star..." lol. So at what point did Sandler go from the guy beloved by so many (Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer) to the guy hated by so many more? You guys should do a "The Devolution of Adam Sandler". He was still okay with The Longest Yard in 2005, fell just a bit with Click in 2006, and then started the massive decline with the atrocious I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. Which also appears to be the beginning of Kevin James' massive decline... hmmmm...

  • Chris says:

I 2nd Mel's post. Adam Sandler dose not have the acting chops that Mark Harmon has. It would be a complete insult to the cult classic. Go ask Burt Reynolds if he thinks it is ok.

  • Rose says:

I love too much the original movie and Mark Harmon and Carl Reiner: It's a big no-no for me. Not happy with the news.

  • Trina says:

Adam - NO how about a Ryan?? either Gosling or Reynolds? either one could be the original Mark's son.

  • Tess says:

There shouldn't be a remake of Summer School.
Why can't Hollywood leave my favourite films alone and, oh I don't know, have an original idea?

  • Yojimbo says:

This film is evidence A in my argument that Kirstie Alley is a fantastic comic actress. In a fairer world she'd get cut the slack that her male colleagues get in order to do some better work.

    • KevyB says:

She doesn't get as much work cuz she's a crazy-ass bitch! Yeah, there are some crazy-ass male bitches that get far too much work... though I'm perfectly fine never having to look at this particular crazy-ass bitch ever again.

  • Hiro says:

No, he shouldn't... particularly because there shouldn't be a remake at all.
