Golden Globe Winner Octavia Spencer is So Over the 'Sassy Black Woman' Parts
Now that Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer's sitting pretty with her Best Supporting Actress trophy, the L.A. Times breaks out a choice quote from an October visit to the set of her Sundance 2012 pic Smashed: "You do a movie like [The Help] to get a movie like this," she said of her new film, which sees her go from spitting retorts and baking special pies as The Help's Minny to helping Mary Elizabeth Winstead battle alcoholism. "It’s nice... to play roles when I'm not just a sassy black woman." Hear, hear. Now let's get Spencer the Oscar, already. [LAT]

Let's not. If she is so unhappy playing such an excellent well-rounded role, one which required her to be far more than just the sassy black woman, then she doesn't deserve the Oscar. Instead give them to the much more appreciative - and better - Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain, the sassy white woman.
@KEVYB See, I think the title of this article is a bit misleading. I don't think she is so "over the 'sassy black woman' parts" so much as that she's just pointing out that the role has lead to other opportunities--and, that she doesn't want to get type-cast. I like this website, I really do. But, I think Ms. Spencer may have been done an injustice in the choice of title for this article, Because, yes--it does make her sound a bit unappreciative.
