Stephen Dorff and Nick Swardson on Porn Comedy Bucky Larson and Being Friends with Adam Sandler

comiccon_swardsondorff300.jpgIn order to catch Stephen Dorff and Nick Swardson during Comic-Con, Movieline had to brave the converted parking lot Camp Playboy, an artificial turf-lined space where dozens of scantily clad Playboy model types (day players, mostly) flitted about during our chat about Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, in which Swardson plays the world's unlikeliest porn star. In other words: The perfect setting.

In Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, frequent comedy scene-stealer Swardson steps into the spotlight as a naïve young man who decides to join the family business: porn. To pursue this dream, Bucky travels to Hollywood to break into the industry, where he encounters Stephen Dorff's reigning porn king, Dick Shadows. The idea came from none other than Adam Sandler, who then co-wrote the script with Swardson.

"I was in Nashville, Tennessee, doing a show, and Sandler called me up," Swardson recalled. "He goes, 'I've got an idea for a movie. What about a guy, just like a goofy dude, and he finds out his parents used to be porn stars in the '70s. He comes across their porno.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, that's hilarious.' And he says, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah - but here's the thing: This guy has never orgasmed before, so he's going to follow in his parents' footsteps in the porn world but he's like the most innocent guy in the world.' So we developed this dude and developed this comedy, and it turned out awesome."

How did Dorff get involved? Credit Sandler for that, too. "I wanted to do a comedy and I'm friends with Sandler, and Sandler really believes in Nick [Swardson]," said Dorff. They wrote this together and I read it and thought it was hysterical."

As it turns out, Dorff and Sandler go way back. "He introduced Adam to his wife!" Swardson exclaimed.

"Adam and his wife Jackie met at my 25th birthday party," Dorff explained. "I'm now 37, I'm an old man. We go way back, and Adam's always been a great supporter of mine and I've always wanted to do more comedy -- I did one movie with John Waters years ago but that was more like Waters-style comedy. [Bucky Larsen] was my first real studio comedy and I had a lot of fun doing it. All these great actors were in it - Don Johnson's hilarious in the movie, Christina Ricci kills it, Kevin Nealon has one of the greatest cameos ever."

Movieline had to ask: Is Stephen Dorff familiar with the YouTube video Stephen Dorff is Filled with Rage?

"I'm not! I don't go online a lot, I get nervous," he said, pausing. "Oh, I think my little sister showed me that, because she goes online. She's 11, and she shows me all this stuff. She's like, 'Stephen, they made this weird animated site about you where you're called The Love Machine,' and I'm like, 'Okay, Kaitlyn!' She says these things to me, because these young kids go online. I have an iPad, I'm pretty good with it, but I don't really go online or read my own shit. I get nervous."

Will the younger siblings come watch Bucky Larson? If Dorff's turn in Sofia Coppola's indie drama Somewhere was too much, probably not. "I don't think she'll probably come to this one," he laughed. "She really wanted to see Somewhere because she has a real crush on Elle Fanning and they're around the same age, so we got her into that one which was a little bit adult for her. But yeah, I think with this one we'll hold off."

"Yeah, maybe like twenty years?" Swardson agreed. "She can see it when she's 40."

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is in theaters September 9. Watch the trailer.
