Watch Meryl Streep Kick Off Oscar Season in First Teaser for The Iron Lady

"One simply has to maximize your appeal. Bring out all your qualities. Make you look and sound like the leader that you could be," says one political advisor to an off-screen Meryl Streep-as-Margaret Thatcher in the first teaser for The Iron Lady. "You've got it in you to go the whole distance," says another. The men are talking about Thatcher's political aspirations, of course, but they might as well be talking about Oscar season. Is this Streep's best chance to get off the Academy Award schneid?

Perhaps. Since the first image of Meryl-as-Maggie surfaced online, the chattering class has heralded her as an Oscar front-runner -- which would be nice, as Streep hasn't won the little gold man since 1983, despite 12 nominations. Judging Streep's performance or the film based on 63 seconds of footage is totally ridiculous, but there is something playful and terrifying about the way her eyes sparkle when dressing-down those conservative muckety-mucks. If that's the tone director Phyllida Lloyd wants to strike with Streep's portrayal, maybe the advanced hype will turn out right.

VERDICT: And the winner is...

And the winner is . . . liberal propaganda! Trashing one of the strongest and most definitive leaders of the age will definitely get Streep the Oscar.

  • PHDinCT says:

Meryl Streep and Hollywood are as corrupt and removed from American's financial pain as the putzes in the White House. They have NO CONCEPT of saving money...they believe that spending money they don't have and borrowing from other people's future is the answer to everything. I DARE THE WRITERS OF THIS MOVIE TO USE THE FAMOUS Margaret Thatcher quote: "The touble with Socialism is that you always run out of other people's money."

  • Alky says:

I can't imagine Thatcher "dressing down" conservatives!

  • Smitty says:

So why would conservative Thatcher be "dressing down" conservatives? What does Maggie herself (a great woman) think of this?

  • Cogito says:

I can not wait until she has to address viewers with Thatcher's most famous line. "The problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
They may have to eliminate the line so she does not choke to death.

  • Royal Blue Tory Fox says:

Baroness Thatcher is simply the greatest PM the UK ever had. The liberal scumbags in Hollywood are clearly out to sneer and mock her. Thankfully her magnificent record and visionary leadership will always be her answer to vindictive petty jealousies, worthless toxic leftist ideology and the irrational, utterly undeserved pathological hatred of the union thugs and marxists she so easily and deservedly crushed to make Britain GREAT again. Thank you Maggie for your selfless, dedicated service to your country.

  • Tony says:

Can any of you Drudge Report types name a SINGLE good law or policy conservatives have passed in the US in a half century. Just one. I dare you to think of it.
Or are you just interested in your tribe, right or wrong?

  • Jacob says:

LOL! Your question itself is the epitome of the "tribe" mentality that you pretend to disdain!
Um, well, Nixon put an end to the Vietnam War. Reagan's policy of outproducing Russia destroyed the Soviet Union's expansionist aggression and effectively ended the Cold War. It was the Gingrich conservatives in Congress that balanced the budget in the late 90s (dragging Clinton along kicking and screaming)...
Of course, to moronic Leftists like you, none of these would be considered "good" policies. The truth is, Democrat liberals have instituted some good policies in the past as well. But simpletons like you live in the Repubs=bad, Dems=good world. In other words, you are a fool.

  • jimbo says:

@Tony..."name single good conservative law or policy..."
    GOOD law=Patriot act.
GOOD policy= kill all radical Islamists as possible
BTW, leave it to a libtard like you to think Government is the source of GOOD. Conservatives REDUCING power of Government is the real GOOD.
Only libtards think that giving more of one's hard earned money to the government makes the individual more powerful. Libtards rail about all the POWER and MONEY of evil corporations but somehow at the same cognizant dissonance time say that giving up your personal money(power) to the government makes yourself more powerful. Stupidity incarnate!

  • NP says:

Ugh. When did Movieline turn into Sarah Palin's Facebook wall?

  • Pullerdog says:

I would beg to differ with your statement that Margaret Thatcher is the greatest PM. That honor is reserved for Winston Churchill. If Churchill is the greatest, Margaret Thatcher is not far behind him. If only we had leaders such as Churchill and Thatcher today.

  • Lee Meyer says:

    I totally agree!!!!!

  • Lee Meyer says:

    I won't patronize this movie!

  • Caroline says:

You are so right! Thank God not all of England is Livingstone Red!

  • Caroline says:

Welfare reform, you idiot! And Ronald Reagan's tax cuts which fueled the fastest, most durable economic growth in history.

  • Patrick Walsh says:

If you're irish, you should hate this woman.

  • Maurice says:

Conservatives (Nixon) passed the Affirmative Action Law into effect in the 1970's.

  • Jacob says:

Ugh. If you notice, these are responses to the "out of left field" attack from your boy Tony, a moron like yourself.

  • el polacko says:

thatcher family members have, allegedly, complained about some aspects of the script but it may be that they are being overly sensitive. merle is, certainly, a compelling actress with a record of convincingly inhabiting her characters. i think that, unlike some others here, i will wait to see the film before deciding whether or not it's a 'liberal hollywood' hatchet job.

  • SugartitsMcFirecrotch says:

Sweet Fancy Moses! Is this Movieline or the National Review???!? Actually from the less-than-George Will/William F. Buckley-ish civilized tone here, I'd have to guess y'all are commenting during a commercial break on Faux News Channel . . . yikes.

  • Rob says:

Your premise is flawed. True conservativism typically isn't about passing laws or policies, but rather the exact opposite -- getting rid of countless unnecessary laws and regulations passed by progressives.

  • Rationalist says:

Wow, Tony...feel like a frickken idiot, yet ?

  • Joe says:

Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher? That's as bad as James Brolin playing Ronald Reagan.
Next up: Satan will play the role of Jesus.

  • joe says:

Can any of you Drudge Report types name a SINGLE good law or policy conservatives have passed in the US in a half century. Just one. I dare you to think of it.

It's not about LAWS, liberal, we have enough LAWS. In fact we have to many laws allowing your vision of "nanny" government to intrude on our lives.
It's about policies such as working to keep a strong military to defend and protect America, something you on the Left think is a waste of money. It was you people who in the 70's actually tried to pass legislation authorizing us to UNILATERALLY destroy our entire nuke stockpile so that, in your twisted minds, "the Russians would see we were serious about peace and do the same".
You see the world as you want it to be and not as it is. The bad guys today LAUGH at the hapless "community organizer" who plays at being president. This is a man who has done the impossible and made Jimmy Carter look good.

  • Kevin says:

Ugh!!!! Might as well have David Duke play Obama in his up coming movie
