TRAILER: Arnold Schwarzenegger Totally Recalls '90s Cartoons in The Governator
In case you were still in denial about Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to TV and films, the first trailer for The Governator has arrived online to prove the former California governor wasn't kidding about becoming an animated superhero. Let's discuss this one ahead.
I've entered a cackling fugue state, so pardon if the rest of this review is a series of keyboard accidents and screams.
First of all, what. What is all of this? Why is Larry King attending Arnold's press conference like a cub reporter at The Ole Suspenders Sentinel? And extending a microphone like that? Like a quote-hungry Helen Thomas type? I also like how Larry commands attention, thrusts the mic into mid-air like a torch singer, and still manages to ask the most softball question on Earth. He will not be denied his pat, publicist-approved soundbite!
Clearly there's a tongue-in-cheek quality to Arnold's persona here ("I will not be back" was the campiest wink of all), but there are a couple of things I'm unironically happy about: the comic-book animation of generation-old animated series like Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Captain Planet, Arnold's fine voiceover, and even the robotic baddies. However, the "robotic baddies" also include the Black Eyed Peas, whose song "Pump It" dominates the last 90 seconds of this trailer. Oops, that's a federal offense punishable by death. If Governator's makers are going for a retro feel anyway, why not use a clip of the Mortal Kombat theme? Or Wilson Phillips' "Hold On"? At the very least, get Ray Parker Jr. to concoct a little something. Unless he's in jail.
I'm going to watch at least an episode of this, but if it turns out to be a mostly humorless and self-congratulatory move -- Sarah Palin's Alaska featuring Stan Lee, if you will -- I'm mentally relegating Mr. Universe to some other galaxy.
Verdict: Tingles all the way! I'm in.
