Harry Potter Shocker: JK Rowling Says Lupin Is An Ex-Gay

Well, they've still got Dumbledore, at least. In a cast interview at the Apple Store in SoHo, David Thewlis revealed that JK Rowling told him that Professor Lupin was gay in The Prisoner of Azkaban but changed over the years and fell in love with Tonks. I cringe at what hay homophobes will make of this, but I figure stranger things happen in the Potterverse. If he changed into a werewolf, why can't he also change into a breast man? I look forward to the next Rowling outing where she reveals that Neville is actually an insatiable pass-around party bottom. [@SnitchSeeker]

Why Twilight (and the other three novels it spawned) get shit upon in some circles yet Hary Potter gets a free pass by the same folks is beyond me.

  • wtf says:

so he was gay for one book only.... ?

  • Athena says:

So yet again, the existence of bisexuality is completely ignored? I really hope that's not actually how JKR meant it, because that's just pitiful.

  • anna says:

Maybe now she'll finally admit that Harry only got with Ron's sister because he couldn't have Ron himself.

And that photo with this article, hmm? Oh, I get it. Next time try some Hogwart's Glide...

Thewlis revealed that JK Rowling told him that Professor Lupin was gay in The Prisoner of Azkaban but changed over the years...
You completely missed, a guy who was gay switched to hetro over time? So being gay is a choice? Beleive me the outrage aint comming from the right on this one.

  • jia says:

Thewlis said he chose to PLAY the character as gay before Rowling later corrected him, and he played him straight in subsequent movies. But yeah,, make stuff up, it's much more fun.

  • Sue Ann says:

Well, prison will do that to you!

  • Hugh says:

no such thing as an Ex-Gay, sweetie. He's bisexual. Do your research, dear.

  • Danny Glover says:

Being a movie journalist is a valid excuse for all kinds of ignorance and failure, but there was a major Kinsey biopic in 2004.
You must have skipped that one.

  • Mike says:

lol.. I love JK Rowling. Rags to riches. She is one of the few people in this world, more specifically the United States, who treat everyone equally and has no hate in her soul.

  • Kirsten says:

I'm not sure what the point of this announcement is. It was the same with the reveal that Dumbledore is gay: the fact is so obscure that there's no point telling anyone about it. If she really wanted to do something for gay rights/acceptance she would have written the characters as obviously gay. I love the books, but this is just one big eye-roll.

  • Amber says:

DUMBASS. she's from england. don't claim her as an american. oh my god... some people are fucking stupid.

  • Deanna Toxopeus says:

The actual interview said that it was the director of the film, not JK. In fact JK didn't know. It's called fact checking.

  • NJM says:

Wheras this guy does have hate in his soul 😛 I don't blame ye though, americans like to think that anyone worth knowing is american...

  • Inahs says:

Maybe because it's hard to take Twilight seriously sometimes? This coming from a semi-fan.

  • Ben Kabak says:

    can u blame him?

  • Candace says:

Someone listen carefully enough. The director said he was gay not Rowling.
Thewlis: “Alfonso Cuarón, in the rehearsals, without J.K. Rowling’s knowledge, told me that [my character] was, in fact, gay. So I’d been playing a part like a gay man for quite a long time. Until it turned out that I indeed got married to Tonks. I changed my whole performance after that. Just saw it as a phase he went through.”

  • Elyse says:

seriously! to elaborate: gay, straight, and bisexual aren't even the only "options" for sexuality. sexuality is a spectrum. you can fall into any ...er, color, shade, whatever, you know??

  • Jules says:

How nice of you to stereotype an entire country full of people based on one guy. I find that most people whom criticize America have never stepped a toe in our country. Hate is a two-way street.

  • Nan says:

    Get your facts straight!!!!!!!

  • GeebsRilie says:

No shit, you would think that they would both think before saying something THAT stupid.

  • Sasuke says:

I'm just glad that this means that there is a POSSIBILITY of Wolfstar(Remus/Lupin)... and she would let this out in GLBT Pride month xD

  • Gordon says:

Actual quote from the interview, "Thewlis says Alfonso Cuarón, who directed Thewlis in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — his first appearance in the series — told the actor to play Lupin as a “gay junkie"" THE DIRECTOR, NOT JK Rowling. It also says he did this without JKs permission, and then changed his performance in the later films after learning he was in fact going to marry Tonks/wasn't gay.

  • Mattb says:

Being poorly written aside, Twilight has a plethora of just plain ridiculous shit in it. However, only naming one is actually necessary:
    *SPOILER*
Edward Cullen gives a Bella a C-section...WITH HIS TEETH!
    Honestly, what the fuck, Meyer!?
