Vote in Movieline's Inaugural Basketball Movie Tournament!

Just because your Final Four bracket is completely destroyed (thanks VCU and Butler!), doesn't mean you can't participate in a bit of bracketed fun. It's still March! There's still time for some madness! In honor of this, Movieline has put together its own tournament... of basketball movies -- and you get to pick the winner.

We've got 16 teams and the seedings are all set -- all you have to do is vote on the winner below. Every day through Thursday, we'll tabulate the results and advance each winning film forward in its particular region -- divided into four sub-genres -- eventually announcing a winner on Friday. Sound fun? It is fun! But, before you vote, let's take a quick look at each individual match-up.

Team Based Region

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(1) Hoosiers vs. (4) The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh

The Hickory Huskers are not so much the underdogs any longer, securing a number one seed in the tournament and, what should be, an easy contest against Dr. J's The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh. But, still, Dr. J! And Disco!

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(2) Blue Chips vs. (3) Glory Road

How can you possibly vote against a film that features a poster made up primarily of the words, "Nolte" and "Shaq"? Unless, of course, you're one who values true stories about overcoming racial injustice, that is.

Mentors Region

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(1) He Got Game vs. (2) Fast Break

"Gabe Kaplan is Having a Ball!" Or so says the poster for Fast Break (my god, what I wouldn't give to live in a time in which Gabe Kaplan is a movie star). Then again, Kaplan hasn't had to play against Denzel Washington and Ray Allen.

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(2) White Men Can't Jump vs. (3) Coach Carter

Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes as street ball hustlers against Samuel L. Jackson's Coach Carter, who is not a fan of hustlers.

Family Region

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(1) Space Jam vs. (4) Slam Dunk Ernest

Potentially the biggest mismatch in the field. What chance does Ernest P. Worrell have against Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, Bill Murray and Newman from Seinfeld? Even if Worrell is (inexplicably) coached by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(2) Like Mike vs. (3) The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island

How will the Harlem Globetrotters react to actually being underdogs for the first time in the history of the Harlem Glob
etrotters? Especially underdogs to a film that stars Jonathan Lipnicki. Do not count the Globetrotters out just because they have Alan Hale Jr. on their team.

Comedy Region

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(1) Semi-Pro vs. (4) Rebound

A controversial number one seed (popular opinion would state Teen Wolf should have received this honor), Semi-Pro's comedy team of Will Farrell and (again) Woody Harrelson take on the quite, um, interesting cast of Rebound: Martin Lawrence, Breckin Meyer, Horatio Sanz and Megan Mullally.

basketball_bracket.jpgbasketball_bracket.jpg(2) Teen Wolf vs. (3) Juwanna Mann

Scott Howard turns into a werewolf and his heralded as a basketball star. Jamal Jeffries cross-dresses in order to play professionally in a women's basketball league and he is eventually scorned. There seems to be a double standard here.

    hoop dreams?

  • Mike Ryan says:

We didn't want to include any docs. With Hoop Dreams, that's someone's life on screen. It would have been weird mentioning it in the same sentence as Juwanna Mann.

  • CiscoMan says:

How did I not know Slam Dunk Ernest existed? Thank you, Movieline.

  • DandyFlowers says:

Air Up There is really getting hosed.
The 6th Man is also another movie that should be in this tournament.
