Weekend Receipts: Gnomeo & Juliet Is Surprise Number One; Nicolas Cage Comes Up Short

In its second week of release Gnomeo & Juliet scaled the heights of the box office, notching a win in a weak weekend. The dudebros of Hall Pass managed a second place debut, while poor, poor Nicolas Cage laid a Brobdingnagian egg, coming in ninth place. And him without a castle to recover in! Your weekend receipts are here.

Never underestimate the power of cabin-feverish kids at the tail end of a harsh winter and parents who will take them to see literally anything to get them out of the house.

2. Hall Pass

Gross: $13,420,000 (new)

Screens: 2,950 (PSA: $4,549)

Weeks: 1

Is there any qualitative difference between this and the other man-boy comedy at the multiplex now? I assume there are boob jokes, fart jokes, poop jokes, and someone's crotch is hit more than once. But true love, or something close to it, wins out in the end.

3. Unknown

Gross: $12,435,000 ($42,840,000)

Screens: 3,043 (PSA: $4,086)

Weeks: 2 (change: -43.1%)

I haven't seen this movie, but I pass by the poster for it twice every day going to work, and I simply can no longer deal with the bitch-face that January Jones is giving in it. Seriously. I'm dealing with enough without getting daily stinkeye from a frosty blond.

4. Just Go With It

Gross: $11,100,000 ($79,355,000)

Screens: 3,544 (PSA: $3,132)

Weeks: 3 (change: -39.9%)

Listen, Alex Pettyfer. I felt bad for your stripping and all, but I just don't know if you're gonna happen over here. But don't feel bad! It took Simon Baker like three or four times before we finally gave in to him.

....

9. Drive Angry

Just remember, Oscar-winners of tonight: it was almost 16 years ago that Nicolas Cage won his Best Actor award. And now he's pumping out even more crap than usual to pay the IRS. So whatever you do, Natalie Portman, don't buy a series of pyramids!
