A Video History of David Letterman Flirting with Natalie Portman

Last night, Natalie Portman appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to plug her new Oscar contender, Black Swan. Over the course of the conversation, Letterman managed to completely embarrass Portman with his constant assertions that Portman is a shoo-in for Best Actress. But after some research, we discovered that Portman, a frequent guest in the Letterman hot-seat, has a way of tickling the talk show host's playfully flirtatious side.

Here's a clip of Portman's first-ever appearance on Late Night in 1994 promoting The Professional. What's interesting is that this interview is the complete opposite from the one yesterday. Yesterday, Portman discussed how she has enjoyed attending the multiple Black Swan screenings because of the audience reaction. Quite the difference with this story of how she fell asleep during her fifth viewing of The Professional. Letterman then takes her to task for her impression of the film's director, Luc Besson.

In this 1996 clip promoting Beautiful Girls (with Alec Baldwin for some reason) Letterman openly admits the he is very fond of Portman and is quite happy when she's on the show. Letterman then gets himself into a passive-aggressive battle of words with Alec Baldwin about their current salaries -- with a 14-year-old Portman sitting right in the middle. For an added bonus, scoot along to the 4:40 mark to when Dave asks Portman about watching the movie Threesome, which stars Baldwin's brother Stephen.

    Hi Mike,
    Excellent post, as always! You missed out on one of the more scandalous Natalie and Dave interviews - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUoIb2Tsn84 - where she's promoting Closer and talking about her experiences doing character research at strip clubs and dance bars. Enjoy!

    Seems that Letterman has pretty much always been a puke!

    this is a case of "perspective" . I am a man and I can tell that he's into her (sexually of course) , but just like all the other men .
    the thing about her and the need to play "dumb" ('cause girls know that men like that -men will say that they don't but they do, bbbelieve me)
    now from a different perspective her behavior is a lil' too dumb (too much .. ya know?) : lemme put it in this way: another girl will immediately see her as "dumb" to please men..
    that's what I meant by "perspective"

    Yea I used to love Dave but now he's just a creepy angry old man.
    Go Coco!

    Dave's a creep. Has always been a creep. It's quite obvious that he "likes" women a little too young... His cringe-inducing distasteful interview style borders on pedophilia.

    @mark
    really? personally, i don't think she's acting dumb at all. if anything, she seems eager to prove that she can be taken seriously (understandable since most people think actresses are stupid). she talks about "on the road", politics, etc.
