'F*cking Trees, Man': Mark Wahlberg Admits What A Horrible Movie The Happening Was

Most actors are loath to talk about their crappy past movies. They usually elide around the subject, speaking in delicate, neutral tones. But in the press conference for his upcoming film The Fighter, Mark Wahlberg appropriately pulled no punches and confessed what we all already knew: The Happening was just a terrible movie.

Asked to talk about his co-star Amy Adams, Wahlberg revealed that they almost did a previous movie together and that's when the truth started tumbling out:

I was such a huge fan of [Amy Adams]. We'd actually had the luxury of having lunch before to talk about another movie, and it was a bad movie that I did. She dodged the bullet. I don't want to tell you what movie... All right, The Happening with M. Night Shyamalan. It is was it is. F*cking trees, man, the plants. F*ck it. You can't blame me for wanting to try to play a science teacher. You know? I wasn't playing a cop or a crook.

F*cking trees, indeed. The conference predictably burst into laughter, with by far the biggest laughs coming from director David O. Russell and co-stars Adams and Christian Bale, who all know a little something about crappy misfires.

But congratulations to Mark Wahlberg for speaking truth to power. Between this and Shia LaBeouf admitting what a stinker Indiana Jones 4 was, we may have an epidemic of truth telling in Hollywood. C'mon Russell Crowe! Admit what a colossal bore Robin Hood was! You have nothing to lose but your chains!

Surprised grouchy didn't refer to the movie as "The Crappening'. It's pretty safe at this point for actors to dump on M Night Shama-lama-ding-dong and any of his movies post "Signs".

  • The Winchester says:

I just wish he did it in a more clever way:
"I'm not gonna say which movie this was HAPPENING about..." (awkward pause for laughter)

  • SunnydaZe says:

    F*ckin' Turdblossoms, man.

  • Formerly Blackwater says:

    It's "loath," not "loathe."

That one always trips me up! Thanks.

  • Refreshing, to be sure. Certain projects must be easy to slam, like George Clooney giggling over the debacle that was 'Batman & Robin.' I'm more interested in what drew Wahlberg to the project. Surely the chance to shake up his role resume couldn't overwhelm that awful script ... or could it?

  • casting couch says:

I had to look up the meaning of "elide" though.

  • JP says:

I'll admit that towards the end of this film, you can almost see the director making it up as he goes along, and the cast seem to be sleepwalking through their roles. BUT, the scene on the city street where everyone clamours to get the gun is absolutely terrifying and shocking.

  • AN says:

I'm scared of living in a world where I Heart Huckabees is a "crappy misfire." Wahlberg was especially tremendous in a comedic role and it's some of O. Russell's sharpest writing. I know it's a polarizing movie but seeing it listed next to Terminator In Name Only and Leap Year seemed like a confusing "one of these things is not like the other" joke.
The Happening is unintentional perfection as well, with a higher laugh-per-minute ratio than most modern comedies that aren't In the Loop.

  • The Winchester says:

Everyone claims this as such as terrifying and well done scene, but I have to disagree when everybody is just using it on themselves.
If they were using it on OTHERS, it would be a shocking and horrifying scene. Go and watch The Signal, a better version of what Night tries to do.

Yo, Marky Mark, it was bad because you were in it...ha..ha...now what if Leo D. had done it...it coulda worked...
