4 Scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 That Aren't in the Book

Some complained that David Yates' Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince cut too many important aspects of the novel in order to fit its running time. But with the two-part structure of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Yates actually had the luxury of adding scenes this time, and for whatever reason he's revealed what they are. Join Movieline after the jump for a summary of the scenes that you'll only find in the film, which sound like they range from good to unnecessary to surprisingly racy. Warning: Spoilers ahead, even for those who have read the book a dozen times.

The Good

Harry and Hermione dance

According to Yates this scene involves an awkward, dance to "Muggle music" between Harry and Hermione in a tent. If handled well, this could be a tasteful, emotional way to address the romantic tension and the confusion between the two (and of youth in general), without making a dramatic change to the story. I'm imagining something along the lines of the dance scene in Eric Rohmer's Pauline at the Beach, which happens a little over six minutes into this clip. Well, up until the making out.

Hermione wipes her parents' memory

This scene is actually alluded to in the novel, but the film will apparently show Hermione returning to her home and casting an Obliviate spell that wipes her parents' memory of Hermione's to protect them from danger. Old family photos fade and the parents are left watching television with no memory of their child. This is not only a poignant, sad idea, but it reaffirms how high the stakes are for the characters. Good call, Yates!

The Unnecessary

A Snatcher Chase

Apparently Yates really liked the idea of The Snatchers in Rowling's novel, so he gave this group of bounty hunters hired by Voldemort a scene to chase Harry, Hermione and Ron. All well and good, but so much of the novel already reads like an extended chase and these movies are long enough as it is.

The Racy

Ron's Fantasies, now with nudity and kissing

In the book, a Horcrux assaults Ron with images of Harry and Hermione embracing. Yates decided to push this scene a bit further than Rowling -- Radcliffe, no stranger to nudity after Equus, will appear completely nude, and rather than just embracing, the imaginary versions of the two will go for a "full-on" kiss. According to Yates: "Dan has appeared nude in the past, but there are a couple of scenes in the new film in which he will undress. We will create something that feels very sexy and very intriguing." No comment here until I've seen the movie.

I've always said, what these Harry Potter movies need is more sexual intrigue and chases.
    And Vin Diesel.

I just can't wait to see Deathly hallows on the big screen!

Oh.. I really want to see the movie! Ema's so gorgeous

They've been missing some parts of this movie from the books in the movies and in this one its really important that they have the details. I'm really excited 🙂

The previous movies cut out so many good scenes to save time, which really ruined an otherwise awesome movie. And now we're able to actually expand upon scenes, which sounds good in theory.
Except, the scenes they want to expand upon, are the most unworthy scenes. I'm sorry, but this movie is targeted towards a younger crowd, and YOUNG KIDS WILL BE SEEING THIS MOVIE.
It's a Deliberate act of trying to piss off the traditional values crowd this time around. I don't think JK rawling intended to do that the first time around, it just kinda happened. This time, IT'S VERY INTENTIONAL. David Yates know's exactly what he's doing.
It's absolutely unneccesary. If the parents of this country had known that Harry Potters ultimate goal was to teach Sex-ed to their kids, I doubt the mom's and dad's would have bought their kids so many copies.
I'm hoping this movie gets an appropriate rating and that all the movie theaters CARD THE KIDS to make sure they're of age.

Yes, because heaven forbid kids actually learn anything from reading a book. Also, you're more worried about the skin than the violence and subject matter? Beloved characters dying on screen, an out-and-out war, and it's the make-out scene that you're worried about kids seeing. Right. Priorities straight? Check.
