Will Bad CGI Breath Cost The Social Network a Visual Effects Oscar Nomination?

The biggest shock about The Social Network -- beyond the fact that it pretty much lives up to the hype and will easily rank among the best films released in 2010 -- is how brilliantly it marries performance and technology to create Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. The Greek god-like Olympians were always going to be The Social Network's trickiest illusion, but director David Fincher, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, co-stars Armie Hammer and Josh Pence, and the visual effects team help make the twins into two distinct-but-identical beings. Still, will their collaborative effort be undone come awards time by something as innocuous as bad breath?

During a scene early in The Social Network, Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin are shown discussing Facebook on what's supposed to be a cold Boston evening. A noted stickler for details, Fincher doesn't stop at just teeth-chattering and hand-rubbing to show how cold it is; instead, he opts for what one has to assume is computer-enhanced breath. Big mistake. At best, the breath looks shoddy, at worst it looks like the bong hit that Jason Bateman ripped in Extract.

Contrast that with the wonders of the Winklevi and the scene looks even worse. Per, EW.com:

"For shots that included both twins at the same time, [actor/model Josh] Pence stood in for the second twin; Hammer later went into a studio, where he strapped his head into a harness to film that twin's face and voice, which was then digitally superimposed over Pence's face in the film. The result is a sort of hybrid actor with Hammer's head and Pence's body. Intricate split-screens and rotoscoping were also used for some shots. Piece of cake, right? "After Benjamin Button, you go, 'It can be done,'" says Fincher. "Give us a case of Red Bull and a weekend, and we'll figure this out."

Fincher and company were able to figure out Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss with a case of Red Bull, but couldn't make foggy breath look real? Too bad. Check out a quick glimpse of the offending scene in the trailer below and leave your complaints in the comments section. Or on your Facebook page.

Loved the movie but the "breath scene" was staggeringly bad. I work in the VFX industry so I thought maybe it was jarring to just me but your article and the friends I was with agreed it was very distracting. Too bad because the twinning work on Armie Hammer was seamless and perhaps the best "twinning" FX seen in movies to date. But that one scene aside, this was a brilliant movie.

What would be tongue-in-cheek about it?

No LONE STAR stories to write about this week? So you shit on a good movie.

  • Yes, because pointing out one misstep of FX work is shitting on a "good movie." How could I forget? P.S., it's a great movie and my favorite of the year, but, hey, whatever.

  • All these tech issues, gadgets and whatnot remind me of what Mashal McLuhan has said: "What may emerge as the most important insight of the twenty-first century is that man was not designed to live at the speed of light. Without the countervailing balance of natural and physical laws, the new video-related media will make man implode upon himself," and IMHO, we're - as a humanity - getting closer to the "imploding moment".

I absolutly love games. It doesnt matter what kind of games they are. Xbox, playstation, w/e. I hope we keep getting great individuals to create these wonderful games. cause without them I would have to start listening doing stuff with my family on weekends! ah! haha jk. Great post admin.

  • Weldon says:

Thanks Chris for pointing out this eyesore. It took me out of the movie completely and baffled my mind. How much red bull must you drink until that garbage passes for remotely believable? I side with Skin, the Marshall Mcluhan quoter— whatever happened to the nifty tricks of the trade like actors huffing dry-ice between takes? Fincher has great insight into the potential of minimalist cgi (i.e. mofoin' Zodiac) but I think he lost sight of the bigger picture in this instance. Any manipulation— digital or otherwise— must serve the story, not diminish it's legitimacy by getting carried away with shoddy pricey maneuvers.

  • Shawn Nulk says:

While Weldon, above, was "taken out of the movie" by this horrendous CGI, I was ripped out of it and dragged behind a jeep during a record-breaking boulder-run.

  • Jason says:

I can't see what the big deal is. Its not that bad. I certainly didn't notice it during the movie and even after specifically looking for it, it still doesn't look bad. Have any of you ever even been where its cold enough to see your breath? your all making a big deal about nothing. Besides, this movie doesn't have a change at a visual effect nomination: its not a very visual movie. A more likely winner would be tron or HP7, something that's big on visuals.

  • Max says:

@ Jason - I live in Toronto. I know cold. I just saw the Social Network last night, and like the author of this article, loved it, but was totally distracted by the fake CGI in the "cold" breath scene. It jumped out at me immediately. Wondering if I was alone, I googled "social network cgi breath cold" and found this article.
It is a big deal, because it was so unnecessary and distracting. I wonder if the audience would have even noticed if their breath wasn't visible in the first place.

  • rs says:

This is precisely why I googled, "Fake breath in Social Network," and found this article. I thought maybe I had done acid and didn't know it, because a movie about techie genius surely wouldn't have such poorly executed and funny CGI fake breath coming out of every talker's lips. Geez, so frigging distracting amidst an otherwise fantastic film.
