Which Emmy Nominees May Be One Step Closer to an EGOT?

One thing left unexplored on this Emmy Nomination Day is the EGOT, the extremely rare phenomenon that occurs when an entertainer wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. (Ironically, though the EGOT got its biggest spotlight ever thanks to Tracy Morgan's recent obsession with it on 30 Rock, he wasn't nominated for his role this season.) Here are the 2010 Emmy nominees who could get one step closer to attaining the Showbiz Award Grand Slam that has only been claimed by a dozen performers ever.

Jane Krakowski (Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series)

Tony: Best Featured Actress in a Play, Nine (2003)

This is the second Emmy nomination for the actress responsible for 30 Rock's over-the-top Jenna Maroney. Krakowski could have Grammy ambitions, too -- she's contributed vocals to a few albums including Broadway Cares: Home For The Holidays and the Jim Brickman album Love Songs & Lullabies. Now, if only she could put out a a bigger record, and find the role in a film adaptation of a musical that she deserves...

Kathy Bates (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie)

Oscar: Best Actress in a Leading Role, Misery (1991)

It's shocking that after one Tony nomination (Night, Mother), three total Oscar nominations, and now seven Emmy nods, Syfy's Queen of Hearts only has one initial component checked off her EGOT acronym.

Matthew Morrison (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series)

Grammy: Best Musical Show Album, Hairspray (2003)

Morrison may be the closest thing on this list to a real EGOT threat: he's got a Grammy already under his belt and a theatrical background that's already earned him a Tony nomination. All he needs is a triumphant return to the stage and a centerpiece episode of Glee sans white rapping, and he'd be three-fourths of the way there.

Jonathan Pryce (Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie)

Tony: Best Actor in a Musical, Comedians (1977)

Tony: Best Actor in a Musical, Miss Saigon (1991)

The Welsh stage and film actor/singer, who earned an Emmy nomination this morning for his work in the PBS miniseries Return to Cranford, already has two Tonys under his belt and could be one step closer to the coveted EGOT come this August.

Alan Cumming (Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series)

Tony: Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Cabaret (1998)

The Scottish multi-hyphenate earned his first Emmy nomination this morning for his work on The Good Wife.

Shirley Jones (Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series)

Oscar: Best Supporting Actress, Elmer Gantry (1960)

No, the actress famous for The Partridge Family never won an Emmy for the ABC comedy series, but she does stand a chance at winning her first trophy for The Cleaner, where she played Lola Zellman.

Sissy Spacek (Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series)

Oscar: Best Actress, Coal Miner's Daughter (1980)

The actress and occasional country music singer could take home her first Emmy for her work on Big Love if all goes her way this fall.

And here are the honorable mentions -- the nominated performers who are still on the road to the EGOT but who have already won an Emmy before:

· Lily Tomlin (EGT)

· Michael Giacchino (EGO)

· Kristin Chenoweth (ET)

· John Lithgow (ET)

· Eli Wallach (ET)

· Christine Baranski (ET)

· Martin Short (ET)

· Elaine Stritch (ET)

· Robert Morse (ET)

· Stephen Colbert (EG)

I really hope Jane Krakowski and Kathy Bates win their Emmys. They're both fabulously great actors.

So we're just going to ignore the fact that, at the time of this posting, Wikipedia credits Philip Michael Thomas with inventing the acronym in question?

  • Am says:

There is something wrong with the world when Matthew Morrison is "the closest thing on this list to a real EGOT threat".

Rita Moreno has two Emmys and an Oscar.

  • par3182 says:

Matthew Morrison sings on the Hairspray cast recording but that doesn't make him a Grammy winner - the award goes to the album producer as well as the composer and lyricist, not to the performers.
