Watch Chuck Lorre's Admitted Failure: The Original Big Bang Theory Pilot

BigBangAmandaWalsh225.jpgHere's your Big Bang Theory trivia of the day: Long before Kaley Cuoco joined the CBS sitcom as Leonard and Sheldon's ditzy neighbor Penny, Chuck Lorre shot a pilot with unknown Canadian actress/VJ Amanda Walsh as his female lead. Walsh and her character -- a street smart gal with a sensitive core -- were both scrapped by Lorre after CBS rejected the pilot. Now, thanks to the wonder of the internet, that original episode (that even Lorre said "sucked") is available for your viewing pleasure.

Note that this pilot, initially shot for the 2006-2007 television season, included a nerdy character Gilda (Iris Bahr) who would later be replaced by Sheldon and Leonard's friends Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar). Also, the original theme music (Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science") was later switched out for an original Barenaked Ladies score. Two years ago, when an interviewer suggested that fans might be interested in seeing the original pilot, Lorre responded, "Wow that would be something, we will see. Show your failures..."

This was a seriously bad pilot. I glad they went the way that they did because I would have never watched it. I couldn't even finish this pilot!

  • Brian says:

It wasn't bad, but not close to as good as the show they finally went with. Interesting that Sheldon wasn't asexual in this version.

  • Bob says:

This was good. Better than the version they went with. Both Leonard and Sheldon are more human, especially Sheldon. I like Howard and Raj better than the nerd girl Gilda, but I like Katie much more than Penny. The transition music is better too.
This entire pilot is something we can relate with, rather than the ridiculous comedy that is now The Big Bang Theory.

  • Jason says:

I do not like this version of Sheldon. I much prefer his 'asexual'ness... It had some funny parts, and I noticed a lot of the same jokes as the original but these played out better.

  • Mida says:

WOW penny is so much better, this was so bad pilot

  • kegzi says:

Well I actually quite liked this pilot. Glad they got rid of gilda, Sheldon IMO is funnier now..and katie is hot!

  • I like it! Some pilots are even worse! Big Bang is a good show

  • Justim says:

That pilot was actually pretty entertaining, the show would have been quite a bit different if they took it that route. not in a bad way, but different.

  • Kevin says:

It wasn't terrible, but thank god they replaced Katie with Penny and changed Sheldon to the hilarious OCD weirdo he is now. Also them having only 2 male friends(who are also hilarious) makes way more sense then them having an annoying female friend.

  • Terax says:

I just watched the pilot. Sheldon isn't a virgin!
They should bring the slutty girl and geeky girl back in some future episodes.

  • RSA Online says:

That was nowhere near "sucking"!! Was only going to watch the first one but couldn't stop and watched them all.
They were right to drop the nerdy girl role. And the awesome theme song is what is behind the success of this show! That is it's role in getting people to 'take a look' in the first place.
I just found another fav show you may be interested in if you like TBBT, check out "Party Down".

  • Lou Biggs says:

Oh wow, that looks like its gonna be good!

  • Brian Mulligan says:

Wow that was fast. WB put a stop to this fun. I only got to see Part 1.

  • Michelle says:

I would have liked to check it out...but thanks to youtube and their stupid copyright crap, it is no longer available... >.

  • tbbt fan says:

anybody got an alternate link for the Pilot since WB pulled these vids from YouTube?

  • Bob H says:

Why? What possible difference could it make to WB if a (relative) handful of fans watch this? Maybe they think it would decrease DVD sales if they put it on a DVD as an extra? As if we needed any more demonstrations of how highly they regard fans.

  • Brandon says:

They do not like to release admitted failures? I can sorta understand that, but truly there is no harm in this.

  • Kirghiz Light says:

Wow thanks YouTube and WB for preventing people from enjoying something. Anywhere else we can find this pilot??

  • kev says:

You can download the episode via torrent here: http://anonymouse.org/cgi-bin/anon-www.cgi/http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/190715969/big+bang+theory+pilot?tab=summary
I suggest using uTorrent for Windows or Transmission for Mac as a torrent client.

  • Julie Miller says:

I just embedded video from a different user. Enjoy!

  • MurrayC says:

This pilot is to the Big Bang Theory what "The Cage" was to the original Star Trek series. With any luck (Hey, Chuck Lore , I hope you are listening) they will include footage from this pilot the same way they included footage from "The Cage" into a future Star Trek episode called "The Menagerie"

  • Martrex says:

I didn't like Katie at all, she isn't as nice as Penny was in the first episode, in fact Katie is kind of arrogant...
Gilda was something different, it was funny how she was trying to hook up with Leonard, and so was Sheldon, weird he wasn't asexual, but i still think that would work pretty good if the series had continued like this.

  • Nick says:

This show is crap anyway. The pilot isn't much worse.

  • Ashley says:

It's not as funny as the show is now but it's worth watching. Just to see, you know?

  • Tiesto says:

Tiesto is amazing. I think the best tune he has is Adagio for strings . I went to see him in jaarbers. I wish he came out singles like that. He is the best i have ever met
