Monkey Ghosts Rule Cannes: Uncle Boonmee Takes Palme d'Or

As perhaps the quietest Cannes Film Festival in recent memory came to a close on Sunday, jury president Tim Burton and his colleagues sorted through 19 selections and handed out awards at the Palais du Festival -- and Movieline nailed it.

Since no clear front-runners emerged in competition this year, the focus just prior to Sunday evening's awards ceremony rested squarely on the aesthetic of Tim Burton. The whispering began days ago: Would he be infatuated by the Monkey Ghosts from Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives? Some even said the dreadful Tender Son: the Frankenstein Story -- about a thoroughly unsympathetic, misunderstood, unloved boy (hello Edward Scissorhands) -- may pique Burton's interest.

Well, all the conjecturing is now over. Burton and company have made their decisions. Below is the list of official winners at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival:
