Idol Castoff Alex Lambert Helps Fuel Anti-Bowersox Trend

alexlambert225.jpg

Last night's Young Hollywood Awards put a spotlight on several glamorous vampires, including the Twilight pixies and the cast of The Vampire Diaries, but the most sinister quote of the evening came from a kid who's not known for being a bloodsucker. Alex Lambert (who capitalized on his regrettably early American Idol elimination by moving into Simon Fuller's If I Can Dream web series house) seized the opportunity to cast shade on Crystal Bowersox, who seems to be losing her once-massive edge on Lee DeWyze. Lambert must've left his diplomacy in his other mullet.

The 19-year-old singer claimed he was not only rooting for Lee DeWyze, but actively hoping Crystal Bowersox would lose since he "doesn't want to hear an album of Janis Joplin covers." Meow.

Hard to believe a guy who was known for mumbling, stammering onstage, and throwing up before every performance is calling out the show's most self-assured performer. It's even harder to believe he's an apparent proponent of propaganda: Crystal performed a Janis Joplin song once ("Me and Bobby McGee"), and otherwise she's sung country ("Nobody Needs to Know"), pop ("People Get Ready"), and singer-songwriter ("Give Me One Reason") material with credibility. It's lazy to call a raspy guitar-playing woman a Janis Joplin wannabe, especially since Crystal is more stylistically diverse than Janis herself. And I think Lambert knows it -- his wiggly sea-monkey frame carries bitterness, y'all.

Of course, he's not the only one to suggest Bowersox's output is limited. The judges have touted Lee's rising confidence over Crystal's sustained swagger, which just proves how valuable it is to have an "arc" on Idol. Come on slow, look woeful, and then act surprised when you're well-received later. Lee's ascent is a part of the anti-frontrunner trend that dogged Adam Lambert, Melinda Doolittle, Siobhan Magnus, and now, potentially, Crystal Bowersox. Can this please end?

And what kind of album, pray tell, would Lee DeWyze give us? He finally broke away from his watered-down Daughtry shtick with that performance of "That's Life" during Frank Sinatra week. But there's no doubt his album would be more predictable than Crystal's and certainly more of a reiteration of recent overplayed Billboard fare. Simon Cowell must be aware of that stigma, because he just assigned "Hallelujah" to Lee for next week's Judge's Choice, which would mark a second departure for the Illinois native. Ellen DeGeneres handed Crystal "Maybe I'm Amazed," which should substantiate her as a chanteuse who can busk whatever genre she pleases.

Finally: What, like the world would rather hear a trembling album of James Morrison covers? Psh.

'Idol' Castoff Alex Lambert Wants Lee DeWyze to Win!

Ha! Total word on this! I'm pretty sure we are bound to get another generic mumbled Nickleback winner. This show is pathetic! Talented, confident, and out of the box people (see Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox) are thrown on the wayside in favor of vanilla, generic, over played, pretty boy mumblers.

  • harmonize says:

LEE DEWYZE is the "TRUE American Idol"!!!

  • harmoniize says:

I don't know if you guys know what you are talking about, but LEE DEWYZE is a very gifted/talented singer/artist, even Crystal admitted herself that LEE is her musical crush meaning she know how good LEE is. I am not falling for Crystal, she will be forgotten in a few months but not LEE, because LEE takes his music seriously. Just watch guys he will prove himself!!! He knows that there are lots of people believing and counting on him. To me, he already has proven himself, with his originality, unique/distinctive voice (which most legends in the music industry have), personality (whenever he answers a question you know he is answering it naturally), humility and good looks (magnetic eyes and magnetic smile - STAR QUALITY!!!) he will sing any song anybody requests him to sing and will take us to his arena, the LEE DEWYZE ARENA!!! He just loves to SHARE his good music for everyone to enjoy (with great depth)!!! I have seen Crystal's hypocrisy since the beginning of the show, it makes me wanna puke!!!
WE LOVE YOU -- LEE DEWYZE!!!!

  • Marie says:

Alex's tasteless and rude comments aside, I've never thought Crystal was going to win. As the article notes, she's been the favorite too long and Americans always prefer for an underdog to win any competition. If she suddenly turns into the underdog, she'll have a better chance than she does now (which is why Danny Gokey recovered from that disastrous Scream On Top 4 performance to beat out the vocally superior Allison Iraheta last season . That nightmare vocal turned him into an underdog long enough to get him into the top 3, at which point, Gokey was now back on top where the judges had been pimping him all season. Kris Allen then became the underdog. Moreover, the voting audience of this show prefers men to women and recently has crowned two white guys with guitars as winners and I see no reason to expect this lackluster season to break that trend, especially because Crystal's personality is simply not bright enough to appeal to enough voters to overcome the predilection for white guys with guitars. Frankly, it wouldn't even surprise me if she was voted off next week.

  • Joel says:

Who is this guy and does his opinion matter at all? Didn't think so.

  • Louis Virtel says:

Too true. Insert second Melinda comparison here.

  • Dave says:

Anyone who votes on that loser show American Idol is a loser themself. It's not a talent show. It's a show based on who comes from the smallest southern town where the residents have nothing going for them but get behind some mediocre singer.

  • bierce says:

I started reading this post and very quickly came to realize that not a single word made any sense to me. Being completely ignorant of all things American Idol makes me inexplicably happy.

  • Mandee says:

I AGREE. Sorry I hate Crystal's sound. She is so overhyped and icant waittill she loses! I'm gonna be voting my ass off for lee, even though I haven't watched in weeks. This season is atrocious. I knew it was doomed the night Katelyn and Alex were cut! I can't wait to hear your CD, Alex!

  • anonymous says:

Alex is entitled to his opinion. This wouldn't even be newsworthy if he simply had said he hoped Lee would win, without making any reference to an album of Joplin covers. He does come off here as sort of douchey.
Personally I don't think Crystal OR Lee is all that. Lee is a 2nd rate Nickelback/Daughtry type with no personality or stage presence. And I'm still waiting for him to sing on-key through an entire live performance. Touring is a key component to having a long career, and if he can't sing on-key or entertain while on stage, who is going to want to come to his concerts? Crystal is not mainstream -- she wants to put out an organic rootsy album. Good for her -- but that type of music don't tend to sell a lot or get much radio play. And again, her stage presence doesn't suggest entertaining concert. Like Lee, she tends to just stand there and play her guitar -- after awhile, all her songs tend to just run into each other. She's a lot more talented than Lee, but I don't kno if she'll end up being any more successful.
As for douchey mullet boy? I think he actually will end up being the most successful of the S9 contestants. If he can get over his stage fright. Boy can sing -- he does sound a lot like James Morrison. But he needs to learn about tact!

  • 1user says:

I happen to agree with him. Crystal has been hyped from day one and I would love for the producers plan to crash. I can't stand Crystal she is so arrogant, and seems like a real"B". Like her poo is good to eat and everyone's else is just a pile of stink. Get over yourself Crystal!

  • Mikey Green says:

Right on, Louis Virtel - what a great article! You've summed it all up. In an otherwise mediocre season, American Idol has unearthed an exceptional talent in Crystal Bowersox and yet people STILL want to rally behind a singer as average as Lee DeWyze!? The guy has been consistently out of tune all season and that is a matter of fact, not opinion. I wonder if people root for these underdogs because they're intimidated by true talent and it makes them feel better about themselves?
Regardless of whether Crystal wins or not (she probably won't now and will likely be better off for it, forging her own path), she'll get her music out there for her fans to buy. Lee DeWyze will sell less records than any previous Idol winner and everyone will have forgotten his name a year from now.
Anyway, spot on article! And Harmonize... big LOL at your entire post, thanks for the laugh!

  • Linda says:

Crystal is a folk singer and doesn't do any other genre well. Listen to Lee DeWyze pre-Idol albums they are great. Casey James was fabulous playing live with his band in Ft. Worth, TX yesterday. He was a completely different singer/performer.

  • Libby says:

I agree with Alex!!! Lee will be the next American Idol.
And I don't understand one thing why Alex can not have his own opinion. There is nothing wrong with it. People have a different taste.
And I also didn't get why title of this article has to be so hateful.
Can't wait to buy your CD Alex!!! You are so talented!!!

  • koi2kichi says:

Crystal has millions and millions of fans!!!! She is the BEST in this season. Crystal will be the champion whether you like it or NOT!!!!!!!!!! Most importantly, she will be a very successful musician with CDs sale by the millions.
By the way, who is Alex Lambert??? And who's care about him??? He is just a lousy loser and his mouth stings badly!!! There is no room in the entertaining world for him with his BAD mouth!!!

  • Libby says:

KO12KICHI, you might be supprised but lots of people cares about Alex. And you also don't have to atack somebody because he has a different opinion.

  • Jennifer C says:

I'd have been more diplomatic than Alex Lambert, but his getting dumped was inexplicable and a little disgruntlement is expected. And he also expressed what a lot of people privately and not-so-privately are saying about Crystal. Great performer, but in a very limited style and of an old female folkie genre that hopefully enough older women buy to give her a decent market.
Lee on the other hand, writes many of his own songs, is contemporary, radio-ready, and has done some awesome studio songs already outside Idol. Casey is in that Southern Rock Blues tradition and bands less talented than his have caught fire in that genre.
And Siobhan Magnus is the one outside Top 3 that industry is looking at. Hard. Besides the vocals - Magnus has shown aspects of what a big commercial draw has - looks, charisma, plays instruments, shines in media appearances and naturally can promote herself. And especially Magnus showing she learned at Idol, got, and then was excelling in the true art of studio recording..

  • chris ford says:

Agree, Linda. Given it is personal preference, but you couldn't pay me to listen to Big Mike sing, and all Crystal's stuff started sounding the same to me after a while. But I'd like to see Casey and his band sometime and just as much for Casey shredding it as singing. Lee I've heard on i tunes and a U-tube of him doing a song he wrote pre-Idol. He is good. He is contemporary!
I also - perhaps even more than Lee, who I hope wins..can't wait for watching and enjoying seeing Siobhan Magnus trying to be, and with high odds of succeeding, in being a significant artist. Besides the singing, Magnus has just about everything else you might check off on a "posible star in the making attributes" checklist. Some of it needs polishing, and she needs guidance..but Siobhan might have the brightest future of any S9 contestant. And don't forget young Aaron, the country boy with the big voice you will hear again, bigger and better as Aaron himself gets bigger and better.

  • Kassandra says:

This is a ridiculous article. The original "quote" Alex supposedly made was from an article on Hollywood Life (http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2010/05/13/young-hollywood-awards-american-idol-crystal-bowersox-alex-lambert/) - a celebrity gossip site. And there is absolutely nothing to back up or give credibility to the story. Yes, Alex Lambert has stated several times that he supports Lee (they were buddies on the show), but in the past he has praised Crystal as well (in a Good Day Texas interview).
In a video shot during the Young Hollywood awards, which is where the comment was apparently made, Alex again praises Lee, but says nothing about Crystal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq3ePnQDqLs
I suspect that Hollywood Life "elaborated" on what he says in this video.
Nor is he at all bitter - he has no reason to be! He is having a great time on the show If I Can Dream, and has already recorded several amazing demos!

  • Molly says:

I'm sick of no name blogs trying to gain traffic by misconstruing things people say. Alex likes Lee, but I'm sure the "gossip" blog mentioned above took things out of context. And then 3rd rate blogs like this one just steal the article which didn't have a source to begin with and that's how rumors get started. Check your facts people!!
P.S. Bob Hope came down from his spaceship and told me Sanjaya was gonna become the first write-in American Idol this season. You guys should all believe it because it's on the internet so it must be true.

  • Susan says:

What is written in this articleis not true. Alex didn't say anything about Crystal. You can see by yourself. Here is a link to the original interview at Young Hollywood Awards: http://www.movieline.com/2010/05/idol-castoff-alex-lambert-helps-fuels-infuriating-anti-bowersox-flame.php Shame on the autor of this article!!!!

  • Gayl says:

Alex explained in a convesation with one of the producers on If I Can Dream that Lee is his buddy and Alex has always supported Lee. Alex has never been anti-Crystal. Alex is just supporting his buddy Lee which is fair. However Alex explained that Lee is more contemporary and that Crystal is more Janis Joplin. Alex never said it in a bad way about Crystal. This is twisting his words.

  • Lsa says:

Movieline is now like tabloid and twisting things. Alex is good friend of Lee and has said he appreciates Crystal too. But he prefers Lee's style and wants him to win. Lee's voice and style is radio friendly and he will put out a CD similar to mainstream Rock-pop of Chris Daughtry, whose debut sold 5 million copies. Crystal's style on the other hand is Folk/Indie -- not exactly the genre all over radio or top of billboard chart. I think Lee will out sell her style, and Alex must be thinking that too.

  • carey says:

I don't see anything wrong with what Alex Lambert said, even taken out of context. Alex and Lee were good friends on American Idol. If former contestant Lilly Scott said that she was rooting for Crystal and didn't need another alternative rock album, that wouldn't bother me either. I don't think comparing a singer to Janis Joplin, James Morrison, or popular alternative rock artists is an insult. I do think the author of this article is bitter about Crystal's diminishing fan base, which can't be pinned on one friend of Lee DeWyze.

  • Cec says:

Although taken out of context, and twisted as the article's writer wanted it as well, it is just one more opinion, and as valid as any other. But the thing that this writer has taken time to care about what Alex Lambert thinks(he should have check the facts, though), made me realize how important this singer has become. Do yourself some research and you'll find out that after leaving American Idol Alex Lambert has become a star of a web reality show, also under the same company, 19E, where he has been working very hard and has already writen and recorded several demos. Even the show presentation now has his new song instead of the Elvis' one.
And, by the way, I don't like Crystal either, do you want to write an article of my opinion?????
