Can MovieClips.com Supplant YouTube? Maybe Not...

A new site called MovieClips.com has launched on the back of a lot of press attention at South by Southwest and a few posts from Jeff Wells, and it's intended "to give movie lovers, movie bloggers, and everyone else a place to easily find and embed licensed movie clips," says cofounder Richard Raddon, who formerly ran the Los Angeles Film Festival (until his controversial donation in support of Prop 8 led to his resignation). Raddon says the site is still a work in progress, but that the quality and interface is better than YouTube. I decided to take it for a test drive.

1. I kick things off by searching for the delicious "I wonder if you wonder" scene from Double Indemnity. RESULT: No clip.

2. I search for Double Indemnity itself. RESULT: "no results for double indemnity."

3. Stymied, I decide to find another scene of mid-century romantic badinage: Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint's train meeting in North by Northwest, which has some of the best dialogue ever written. RESULT: None of those amazing lines turn up a clip of the scene.

4. I search for North by Northwest itself. RESULT: "no results for north by northwest."

5. All right, fine. Let me go for something more recent. Frequent Movieline readers may remember my slight obsession with Samuel L. Jackson's line "Hold on to your butts" from Jurassic Park. Might it turn up in Movie Clips? RESULT: Clips from Tremors and They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!, but no Sam Jackson.

6. I search for Jurassic Park itself. RESULT: A clip from the Michael Moore-directed Canadian Bacon, but no clips at all from Jurassic Park.

7. OK, maybe Jurassic Park is a blind spot in their compilation, but surely they have something from Titanic, right? Second-biggest blockbuster ever? "I'm the king of the world"? RESULT: Nothing from Titanic. Instead, some Lord of the Rings clips.

8. Last chance, MovieClips.com. Please give me Sandra Bullock's "I've got gum on my seat, GUM" line from Speed, which I've quoted incessantly since her Oscar win. RESULT: Nope. But there are some clips from Speed. Relative success!

OVERALL VERDICT: Sorry, guys, I'm sticking to YouTube for now. Sticking, on account of the gum. Let me know in the comments if you have better luck than I did.

Looks promising. As with all of these things, it all comes down to how much and how fast they can add to their library. I mean, they only have one of the two training montages from Rocky IV, and not the one I wanted.
As for the fact that the first thing I searched was "Heart's On Fire," well... er...

You've got to love a "journalist" with an agenda cause they've got an ax to grind (made obvious by the irrelevant prop 8 comment). *sigh*
Search results listed by order of article:
    1. http://bit.ly/dnO91t
    2. Of course, they cannot provide a viewing experience for something not in their library (which is admittedly limited, but they tell me it's constantly growing right there in the empty results; so I've got to believe them). If I remember correctly YouTube didn't launch with all of their content in place either.
    3. No quotes included, but I did a search on some of the quotes in imdb for this movie, nothing. Come on guys...
    4. see #2
    5. http://bit.ly/9NGT3x
    6. see #2. In Canadian bacon they mention Jurassic park in the dialogue (clearly presented as to why it came up). Pretty smart returned result in IMHO.
    7. see #2, returned other clips that had to do with the string I searched, like characters that were kings, etc… Dialogue result for clip not in library found right here: http://bit.ly/9d9T8g

I see. This "journalist" hates movieclips.com because of the hornet's nest in his brain due to the fact he can't marry his "significant other".
Strong argument, Captn. Ron. (BTW, WTFRU?)

  • Sebastian Tovar says:

What a shame Sandra's big liner hasn't been uploaded yet. I really think her "gum" delivery was genius. No, but I really do. I just searched Woody Allen on movieclips.com and I didn't get results from "Stardust Memories" or "Hannah and Her Sisters", but instead got clips from movies that he didn't even direct, i.e "What's new Pussycat" and "Casino Royale". Eghh I hate those movies.

I'd avoid these guys. One of the co-founders donated $1,500, through the Mormon Church, to pass Proposition 8. Yuck!

If it isn't really in Creative Suite 4 Master Collection, perhaps you don't need it.

So there I go again buying every copy of "Warlock and also the Infinity Watch"
or, God assist me, "The Defenders". Therefore, the TRA is able to accurately predict intention.

used tow truck. When it comes to accessories like this, the old advice "you get what you pay for" applies.
Its not even a bad idea to pre-choose your
